Centralia, Illinois serves as a hub for several mixed-use campgrounds with diverse accommodation options. The area features established campgrounds like Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area and Coles Creek Recreation Area on Carlyle Lake, the largest lake in Illinois. These campgrounds provide a range of camping experiences from primitive tent sites to full-hookup RV spots, with some locations also offering cabin rentals. Washington County State Recreation Area, located south of Centralia, provides a more secluded camping environment with wooded sites surrounding a smaller lake.

Most campgrounds in the region operate year-round or have extended seasons from early spring through late fall. Carlyle Lake campgrounds like Dam West and Dam East offer electrical hookups at most sites, with some providing full hookups including water and sewer connections. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for weekend stays during summer months when waterfront sites fill quickly. Weather conditions can affect camping experiences, with potential for flooding in some areas during heavy rain periods. A camper noted, "This campground qualifies for the senior pass for reduced rates. It is directly on Carlyle Lake, the largest lake in Illinois. It has activities for children on the weekends."

Lakefront camping represents a significant draw for visitors to the Centralia area, with multiple campgrounds providing direct water access. Several Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Carlyle Lake receive consistently high ratings for their spacious sites and lake views. According to one visitor, "This is our favorite campground in Central/southern Illinois. The sites are very nice and most have shade. There is a beach for campers to use, and a really nice playground." Campgrounds typically feature amenities such as shower houses, dump stations, and playgrounds. The region's camping areas balance proximity to water recreation with wooded settings, offering both sunny lakeside spots and shaded forest sites. Visitors frequently mention the quality of fishing opportunities, particularly at Rend Lake and Carlyle Lake, where crappie, largemouth bass, and catfish are common catches.

      St Louis Mulberry RV Gardens

      Could be worse

Pulled in after the office had closed. They knew we would show up late. Around 1930. Still light outside. Opened the after hours check in and there was nothing for us. Or a map. Luckily there was a number to call. We called. Lady said she was on break and would call us back. Never did. After digging through emails, we finally found what site they had assigned to us. Very small print. Due to this app we were able to use the map posted. However there was no p10 site. Just up to p09. Called the lady back. Said there’s a p10 but that she would move us to p9 in the system. Just decide to stay because we’ve been driving all day. Beautiful grounds/location. Enjoyed a nice sunset. It’s sad it’s “kept up” by these people who can’t help someone because they are on break. Appears a lot of the campers live here. Which to me doesn’t matter. But it does when you can’t help someone for 5 min. Campers are nice. Bath house is a bit dirty. But usable. Skipping a shower tonight but the toilets and sink work.

      Dam West Area (day-Use)

      Indiana Dunes State Park

This is my first experience RV camping and it was wonderful. They have a Bath House nearby in case you need it but they also have electric and water right here. It is $20 per trip to get in, but only $46 per night. I understand it is significantly less if you are in Indiana resident.

      Gun Creek

      Great location

Easy access off the highway. Lots of trees. Sites reasonably spaced. Great water access. Easy to back in but there were lots of trees so bigger rigs be aware.

      Arrowhead Lake Campground

      Beautiful spot

Well maintained, friendly staff, peaceful, gorgeous campground! Does not have sewer hookups and water pedestal is every 2 spots so you need a very long hose to connect. But even with those disadvantages, I’d live here!

      South Marcum Campground

      Beautiful lake views

This is a beautiful campground with sites right on the lake. Each spot has an extra parking spot. The sites are very wide and there are many loops. It is an Army Corp campground so the price was only $22, but if you have a senior pass it is $11. Very quiet, but you can occasionally hear the expressway.

      Percival Springs RV Campground

      Beautiful spot

Next door to the little public airport with fairy lights strung about. An open field greats you at your site and you can watch the helicopter or people fly with parachutes. Full hook ups. No WiFi or cable or anything fancy. There is a little playground on site as well. Pet friendly. There could be a height problem for people coming off expressway as there is a train track with a 13’10” clearance. No gas within 5 miles. Wasn’t an issue for us. Campsite accepts cash, check, and Venmo.
