    Overview

Bald Mountain Lookout offers the opportunity to enjoy unforgettable views and participate in a variety of recreational opportunities. It was built in 1956 and was used as a fire lookout until 1984. Guests can drive to the lookout in vehicles with good ground clearance, but trailers are not recommended due to some rough spots on the road. The lookout is typically open from early July through early October. The accommodations are mostly primitive, but some conveniences are provided. Guests will need to bring some of their own supplies and gear for a comfortable experience.

    Recreation

Access to Strychnine Ridge Trail 319 is just southwest of the lookout. This 4-mile trail intersects with Beason Meadows Trail 228 a half-mile below the lookout. The Beason Meadows Trail is 8.9 miles long and leads down to Giant White Pine Campground. These trails are open to hikers, mountain bikers, motorcyclists and equestrians. Click here for an Idaho OHV safety message.

    Natural Features

Bald Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the Hoodoo Mountain Range, and it's heavily forested with a mix of larch, red cedar, hemlock, western white pine, Douglas fir and Engelmann spruce. The lookout offers a bird's eye view of the surrounding mountains from its perch 5,334 feet above sea level. Guests who come to this rustic retreat can enjoy a panorama featuring the golden, rolling hills of the Palouse to the south and St. Maries to the north. The lookout offers an ideal vantage point to watch sunrises and sunsets or gaze at the stars. Wildlife watchers may see eagles soaring through the sky. Bear, moose, elk and deer are frequently spotted in the area.

    Nearby Attractions

Bald Mountain Lookout is located just off Highway 6, which is known as the White Pine Scenic Byway. This 80-mile scenic drive takes visitors through beautiful forests, historic towns and scenic farmland.

    Camp Coeur d'Alene

Tucked in the side of the mountain on the water

Even though the sites are small and close together, they are at different levels as you go up the hill combined with the sites and cabins being tucked under the giant pines, gives you a sense of privacy. It's a really cute campground/resort. They offer tent area, Rv area and log cabins of various sizes. Pool. Boat launch with access to coeur d'Alene lake. Beautiful setting. Cell signal is good.

    Camp Coeur d'Alene

Beautiful camping. Amenities for just about everything.

Quick visit stayed here In order to explore coeur d Alene. On the lake and surrounded by mountains. Cabins, RV, tents sites available. Literally Something for everyone here. I like more off the beaten path camp grounds myself. Still you can't win the all. Our dog had a blast with our camp neighbors that made it. Dog friendly. Would stay here again.

    Dated, crowded, no shade

We stayed one night in a deluxe cabin. It was spacious enough, with a partial kitchen, AC, and full bath. The grounds are well-kept but older. The cabin was tired—cabinets with loose hinges, squeaky bed, tub drain was slow, WiFi wasn’t working. Each cabin has a propane grill and the one by ours was too dirty to use. There is no shade on the cabins or many of the tent sites and it’s often so hot here in the summer that the AC can’t cool very well. It was 82 in our cabin despite running the AC and keeping all the blinds closed. The pool is clean but very cold and there is no shade on the playground so go in the morning or evening if you don’t want to get burned. Nothing nearly except a Wendy’s and a convenience store. Trains going by all night nearby.
Fine for one night, but don’t recommend an extended stay Note: they do not allow EV charging but there is no written policy anywhere on the website or in any of the registration emails.

    Beautiful but busy with ATV's

We stayed in a cabin for two nights in late June 2021 and had an awesome time! Lots of great tent and RV campsites in a nicely maintained park! They have ONE handicapped cabin and 3 regular! Bathrooms are pit style but kept very clean!

Freeman Creek Campground — Dworshak State Park

    A little bit of everything!

Freeman Creek at Dworshak State park has great opportunity for all levels of camping. Tent sites, RV/Trailer sites, or a few small primitive cabins (no bathrooms or kitchens in the cabins). There is also access to the reservoir for boating, fishing or to mini-camp sites all along the reservoir. Kokanee fishing is great from March to about late July. The spawn begins in August, so the fish move up the reservoir as the season progresses. Smallmouth bass fishing is great! The Idaho state Smallmouth record was caught in this lake. Day use parking is available for a small fee. For Idaho residents with the State Parks pass reduces the fee. A lot of wildlife viewing too! If you are lucky you may see a black bear feeding on blackberries, deer are numerous, elk frequent the lake, and one of my favorites is to watch Osprey dive in the lake for fish.

I have been at this park in every month of the calendar, but only camped from April thru October.

Getaway on the edge of a big city.

Sites were close together and little privacy. The tent sites and cabins were the best in the park. The staff was wonderful. Some parts of the park needed updates. The park is nearby to the river trail that is paved and takes you along the Spokane river. Linens and bath towels included in deluxe cabins would be a huge plus.

    Beach, Camp, Play

This Spot i have been going to for 35 + years its operated by the county and a fee of 25 dollars is charged for basic dirt camping spot, more for RV and cabins. Sandy beach, amazing hikes through ancient ceder Forrest. For an urban campground I think this is as good as it gets.

    Everuthing was relaxed and easy

We booked through Airbnb. when we arrived, we learned that the campground wa San old KOA. it had a decent shower room and we stayed in a small, clean cabin right by the entrance of the park. We also saw tent campers. You could take paddle boats out onto the lake if you wanted. We had a picnic table and an area for a fire. we all had a nice time.

Hawleys Landing Campground — Heyburn State Park

All the basics is all you need

Friendly & knowledgeable staff, clean and well organized sites, fair amount of trees and bushes for reasonable “campground privacy” (tent-only spots have less privacy than sites with electricity and water), Lake CDA super close by (many sites with great views, paved trail that extends many miles for bikers and runners, cabins available (reservations), not fancy, but CLEAN BATHROOMS that are WARM and have no-coin HOT SHOWERS. FYI: Does not have restaurant, but who needs one camping??? P.S. Reasonably priced.

Nice spot close to Lake Coeur D'alene

This is a great stop point before getting into Idaho. The campground was very well maintained and great to stay at. It is located in between Spokane proper and Coeur d'Alene (so Spokane Valley). There are tons of spots to choose from, but it gets pretty busy in the summer. The cabins were great and had everything you needed to get by.

There is a laundromat, store, sports area, lots of space for dogs and a game room at the main lodge. I really liked the community fire pit since there wasnt a fire pit at each site. One cool thing about this site is they have "gazebo sites" for RV campers. They also have an outdoor movie theater set up, but we werent able to take advantage of that perk.

We were able to drive a short way to Lake Coeur d'Alene for their Fourth of July events and even rented a lake boat for tubing.

Great site for families, RVers, and pet owners.

    Great Stay, Wonderful Managers.

Our family had a great one night stay. It was very last minute but they had a tent spot available. They do have around fifteen RV spots a few small cabins, and a handful of tent spots. The tent spots are around the perimeter of a gazebo that had electric hookup. They have four total restrooms, two of those have showers, and they have a laundry facility available as well. Everything was clean and we'll kept! Planning on staying again!

    Came here on accident

My and my lady like this place a lot! Nicely maintained facilities and bathrooms with hot showers. We got there late in the evening with no reservations but we were lucky enough to go online and book it on the spot. There are a few options. RV's and cabins. We got a tent spot, they're fenced to separate everyone. Don't quote me but I think they have canoes for people to use and a waterway to the beautiful lake. Felt safe here. I'll be coming back if I ever venture this way.

    Cabins and RV sites!

Great place for older campers and our door enthusiasts.

There are cabins that are closely nestled next to a shallow and clear river. We checked this place out on a week long exploration of the area, but decided it was not backcountry enough for our liking.

I plan to do a lot more RV, and other motorized activities when I get older and less sturdy. I plan to stay at this place when my golden years finally arrive, but in the meantime we moved on to explore the trailhead locations and dispersed areas to get time under the stars.

There’s tons of wildlife and beautiful drives and walks to be experienced here .

    KOA Spokane

Nice little place in the Spokane Valley close to shopping Idaho boarder. Has small outdoor pool bike rentals. Good bathroom and showers. Down side right next to train tracks though thr train didn't go by much during the day but of course it did at night blasting it's horn every time. It's a good enough place for a quick stop over on tour way to some other place not good for long stay. They did let us move to a bigger spot once we realized how close we were to our neighbors and the e kids we needed a little bigger spot and not a small patch of lawn with the neighbors slide-out 2ft from out picnic table

    Nice but crowded

I stayed in the tent part of the campground, and the sites (especially the first few) are awfully close. This is a great campground for camping with friends but I don't recommend it for a quiet getaway.

Regardless, I still enjoyed my time with my dog and the tent sites were nicely shaded so I wasn't baking in them. There's many hiking trails nearby to explore and you're walking distance from the lake.

    Great time with friends

Spent the night at the Heyburn Campground tenting with friends. Nice campground and facilities. Everything seemed to be maintained and kept clean. The best part of the campground was the accessibility to the lake. It was maybe a little over a quarter-mile walk from our campground to the path that goes along the lake but its work the walk. The path offers great views of Lake Cour d'Alene and my friends and I took a short swim. Overall great time and would recommend it for people looking to get away for the weekend.

    Convenient Camping

Liberty Lake is great for a quick get away if you have a camping itch that you need to scratch. It is easy to get to and has everything you need. It can be crowded and the sites aren’t secluded but is beautiful in the summer and close to the lake.

The bathrooms are always clean, there’s showers, and firewood for purchase. The hiking and biking trails are solid and the waterfall is amazing.

All in all, you can’t go wrong with Liberty Lake.

    Liberty Lake Tidy and quiet

This is a Spokane County campground about a mile from the Idaho border. It’s located down a country road so use the website to find it. It had two ex-marine hosts when we visited so the potential for yahoos is low. In fact it was neat, tidy, and quiet when we visited for one night. It is a popular place for locals and fills quickly. Warm showers are included. Beware that tent sites 2&3 accommodate one compact vehicle only, this is not clear from website which will accept payment for 2. The other would have to park elsewhere as directed. The park is pleasant with lake access and hiking trails

    Unforgettable view

100% recommended. Just come and take a look for yourself. Been camping for years this is 100% my favorite. Just remember to reserve ahead. The only downside is there are like a million fies in here, killed like 20 before I went to bed and there’s another 20 in the morning. Make sure your vehicle is offroad the ride is very rough. Don’t bring any trailers, get offline map before coming. Bring a lot of water. No cell service, if you have Starlink, set it up at the south east side of the tower, thats the only place I could get signal.

Hawleys Landing Campground — Heyburn State Park

    Great Campground but loud maintenance

We stayed at Chatcolet campground for two nights in late June. The campground is really nice with lovely hosts and clean flushable toilets. We booked site 128 and didn’t realise it was a tent only site with a short walk from where you park to the picnic table, fire ring and tent pad. We have a rooftop tent so we parked and set up our tent and then just carried our chairs, food and wood down to the picnic table. Privacy on these sites isn’t the best, I would recommend booking this site along with 129 as a group site to give yourself good privacy.

Overall this campground was great, the toilets were clean, they are porcelain, flushing toilets inside a hut. There was drinking water and some nice walks to the lake, if you have bicycles there is a really nice cycle that you can do. The reason for rating this 3 out of 5 is that there was very noisy and intrusive maintenance going on from 7am to 5pm in the sites next to us which was very disruptive. No warning had been given about maintenance in the campground, notice was only given regarding roadworks leading into the campground.
