    Wildflowers

This is where President Roosevelt came to relax. Warm Springs and Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site is a short drive away. Calloway Gardens and a drive through animal park are all close by. The campground is nice with lots of trees so there is some privacy. There are 2 campground loops, and a small lake. Most are water and electric. There is s dump station. There is a horse stable, too. Dowdell's Knob where President Roosevelt sometimes picnicked at King’s Gap. There is still a picnic area there, with A life-size sculpture of the former president.

The Civilian Conservation Corps built many of the facilities during the Great Depression, including cottages and the Liberty Bell Swimming Pool which is spring fed.

    BEAUTIFUL SETTING!!

FDR State Park campground is amazing! The campground is tucked away in a separate area in the park and very quiet. The sites are large and level. There are several pull-through sites available.

If you're into hiking and geocaching, THIS is the park for you! The Pine Mountain Trail is 23 miles of sheer bliss!! There is actually a mountainous area here and the views are amazing!

If you're wanting to explore the area, beautiful Callaway Gardens is just a few miles away from the park, as is Warm Springs (home of FDR's Little White House)!

We have camped here multiple times and each time is a treat!!

    Hikers dream!

With 40 miles of trails it’ll take us many visits to hike them all. We had six nights in March 2020 and managed ten miles of the Pine Mountain Trail’s 25 miles. Wolf Den Loop trail has five waterfalls within five miles of the Pine Mountain Trail and the loop is completed with 2.4 miles White Candle Trail. That was a full day for us the next day we did Dowdell’s Knob Loop that has some beautiful vistas and a memorial to the parks namesake. When you’re worn out from hiking the Liberty Bell pool offers great relief a strikingly beautiful pool with a flagstone bottom. Nearby is the towns of Pine Mountain and Warm Springs. I recommend Chipley’s Chicken in Pine Mountain and the Little White House and FDR museum in Warm Springs. A little farther afield is Plains Ga. where President Jimmy Carter grew up and lives to this day. The small farm he grew up on has been made into a National Historic site with recorded narration by the President. The Plains High School has also been turned into a museum.

    Nice campground, lots of history

Tent camped on site 611 with water and electric.Very close to clean showers. Showers have two private family rooms for added privacy. The 600 series sites appear to be new. Friends used full hookup, pull-through RV just across road. Many shady spots.

Lots of trails in park. President Roosevelt had favorite overlook in park which now has his statue. FDR Little White House and museum are very interesting and only a few minutes away in Warm Springs. Pine Mountain is pretty small town.

Good easy accessible back country camp sites

FD Roosevelt State Park between Pine Mountain and Warm Springs GA offers 23+ miles of hiking trails that are highly trafficked by day hikers, runners, families, and picnickers. Peak seasons can make the trails crowded.

Campsites and cabins are available for drive ins, but there are designated back country camping sites along the trail. Unfortunately information regarding the sites is sparse and vague at best. However you can park at multiple locations to allow you to customize your hiking to camping needs, and all the camp grounds seemed to be imclean and in good shape.

    Nice site, well maintained

I am getting back into camping for the first time in a very long time. Went to FDR State Park because it’s only about 30 minutes from home. Booking site 111 was easily done online. I arrived after the office had closed but my reservation sheet with instructions was left in a box on the door for me to pick up. Great park with nice lake for fishing, kayaking, paddle boating as well many hiking trails. Bathrooms were clean and well maintained. Visited Dowdell’s Knob which gives a fantastic view…no wonder it was FDR’s favorite picnicking site when visiting Warm Springs. I would definitely recommend and will be back, but next time will be spring or fall because summer was just too hot.

Franklin D Roosevelt State Park Campground

One of my favorite parks close to home

This is park is just a few hours away from home so we stayed for a few days to camp and hike. I took my teardrop trailer and had site 315. It was perfect for my little camper and even had a couple of trees perfect for my hammock. Easily could walk to the restrooms too. The camp hosts staying across the way were so friendly.

I didn’t even have to leave the park to hike! So many trails close by and a beautiful lake to walk around. I want to come back soon and explore some more.

F.D. Roosevelt State Park a natural historical beauty.

This campground offers it all. Set in F.D. Roosevelt State Park you are surrounded by forest, lakes, streams, rock formations and campsites are quiet and private.  We stayed in site #114 directly on the lake.  The state reconfigured some of the sites along the lake and site #114 is no longer on a slope.  Very level space with water, electric and sewer.  Close to a very clean restroom, playground, rental boat ramp and so much more.  Everything a family could want to spend a few days in nature.  Lots to do in the area - Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, city of Columbus, Chattahoochee River, Little White House, etc.  Highly recommend this jewel in Georgia.

Situated in the Pine Mountain region at elevations between 750-1,395 feet, the park features wooded terrain with diverse wildlife across its 9,049 acres.

What to do

Fishing and boating: Lake Delanor in Franklin D Roosevelt State Park offers fishing and paddle boat rentals. "Clean and shady sights, being upgraded this year. Many trails a lake and history," notes Carol L. The lake provides recreational opportunities beyond horseback riding.

Hiking with children: Multiple well-marked trails accommodate families with various skill levels. "This park is great for hikers -- lots of great trails. I went with my three kids and we all had a blast," says Dana P. Many trails start directly from camping areas, making day hikes convenient without driving.

Local attractions: Visit nearby sites within a short drive from your campsite. "Very clean and family friendly place. Trading post available for firewood And supplies. Also short drive from the animal safari, and Callaway Gardens," reports Paul N. The Pine Mountain area offers additional activities beyond the park boundaries.

What campers like

Spacious, private sites: R. Shaefer Heard Campground on West Point Lake offers well-spaced campsites. "Lake sites are huge and well spaced out with plenty of shade and privacy, others seemed packed in (as with most parks)," explains Ward. Sites accommodate various camping setups comfortably.

Clean facilities: The campground maintains high standards for bathroom cleanliness. "Bathroom facilities were very clean, with showers and laundry. Placed well around the campground," according to Liz H. Regular maintenance ensures comfortable stays even during busy periods.

Family-friendly activities: Parks offer organized activities for children beyond standard playground equipment. "We fished and swam, they also had a scavenger hunt that you kids loved doing," shares Joshua H. These structured activities help keep children engaged throughout multi-day stays.

What you should know

Gate closure times: McIntosh Reserve Park and other area campgrounds enforce strict gate closure policies. "After 8pm, the park gate closes. I was given a gate code in case I needed to leave and return during the closed hours," explains Sarah S. Plan arrivals and departures accordingly to avoid being locked out.

Water access variables: River and lake levels fluctuate seasonally, affecting campsites and recreation. "The lake is down right now because they are repairing the dam so it was fun to walk along the banks," notes SJ W. Water levels may impact swimming, fishing, and boating opportunities.

Limited cell service: Many campgrounds have spotty connectivity. "Verizon was weak over most of the property talk and text ok but data not so much," warns Ward. Download maps and information before arrival as online resources may be inaccessible.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Choose sites strategically based on amenities important for children. "We camped in campground 5 and from where our site was we could see the playground and also let our kids ride there bikes around the circle that the camp sites where on," recommends Joshua H. at Franklin D Roosevelt State Park.

Water play options: Several campgrounds offer alternatives to swimming. "Took the kids to the splash pad and enjoyed cooking out and hanging out over night," shares Ryan N. about McIntosh Reserve Park. These features provide safer water recreation for younger children.

Kid-friendly hiking: Select appropriate trails based on children's abilities. "This park has great camping with many, many sites of various sizes, all for roughly $30 a night. This may sound steep but the amenities by far make up for it," explains Everette G. Well-marked trails with moderate difficulty accommodate family exploration.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger rigs: Quail Run at Pate's Creek provides convenient access for travelers. "Great location if you're driving through or visiting Atlanta. It's just off the interstate, and there are plenty of restaurants around," notes Joseph P. The location works well for overnight stops during longer journeys.

Pad size limitations: Check site dimensions before booking. "Reserved out spot long in advance to get a spot on the lake, please do like all campgrounds all sites are not created equal. Most all are concrete pads and level but if your camper is over 25' or so length may cause a problem," cautions Ward at R. Shaefer Heard Campground.

Hookup availability: Campgrounds offer varying levels of services. "We were on site 213 and 214. Beautiful wooded site lots of space between sites in this loop. Very short walk to lake. Sites pretty level and gravel," reports Liz H. Water and electrical connections are available at most developed sites, though full hookups may be limited.
