What to do
Trail riding access: Equestrians visiting Franklin D Roosevelt State Park Campground appreciate the riding opportunities in the surrounding area. "My four kids and I had a blast at FDR state park. They have a lot of stuff to do there. We fished and swam, they also had a scavenger hunt that you kids loved doing," shares Joshua H.
Fishing and boating: The park's lake provides water recreation options for campers between trail rides. "We were on site 213 and 214. Beautiful wooded site lots of space between sites in this loop. Very short walk to lake. Lots of hiking trails, pool, can rent canoes and paddle boats on the lake," notes Liz H.
Historical sites: The region near horse campgrounds in Omaha, Georgia features significant historical attractions. "Very clean and family friendly place. Trading post available for firewood and supplies. Also short drive from the animal safari, and Callaway Gardens," reports Paul N.
What campers like
Spring swimming: Blue Springs State Park Campground offers refreshing natural springs that provide relief after trail riding. "The springs are very pretty and great for a natural spring. We did not swim but were very impressed with the cleanliness of the water," says MtnBkr1984.
Shady campsites: The tree coverage at horse-friendly campgrounds near Omaha provides natural cooling. "Clean bathrooms, lots of shade, fresh water pump and electric at our site. Not much privacy but the lake is beautiful and you can rent boats, plus lots of hiking and history around," mentions Stephani.
Spacious sites: Some loops offer more separation between camping spots. "We were on site 213 and 214. Beautiful wooded site lots of space between sites in this loop. Very short walk to lake. Loop 1 sites are lake front and lake view but more close together than we like," reports Liz H.
What you should know
Varied site quality: Campsite conditions vary significantly across different loops. "Very clean and shady sights, being upgraded this year. Many trails a lake and history," notes Carol L. from White Oak Pastures.
Seasonal crowding: Spring and summer visitation impacts experience quality at some locations. "The spring is beautiful and flows into a little creek... this place has the potential to be a good spot but the staff and the people who visit really need to step up and clean this place," cautions Christopher P.
Water temperature: Natural springs maintain constant cold temperatures regardless of outside heat. "The main attraction in this state park is the spring fed pool. I tried it but found it too cold even though August in Alabama is very hot," reports Deanna C.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Some campsites offer convenient access to play areas. "We camped in campground 5 and from where our site was we could see the playground and also let our kids ride there bikes around the circle that the camp sites where on," advises Joshua H.
Ranger programs: Franklin D Roosevelt State Park offers educational activities for children. "This is one of my favorite Georgia State Parks. There are many sites to choose from and there are plenty of things to do in the area. This park is great for hikers -- lots of great trails. I went with my three kids and we all had a blast," shares Dana P.
Weekday visits: For equestrian families seeking quieter experiences, timing matters. "This place would be good to visit on a week day early in the morning. I don't recommend staying on the camp ground," suggests Christopher P.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: RV campers should prepare for uneven terrain at some equestrian campgrounds. "The sites have older hookups but they are functional. The campsites are not level and some of them you have to guess where to put the trailer," advises MtnBkr1984 about Blue Springs.
Hookup availability: Most sites offer basic utilities for horse camping vehicles. "This park has great camping with many, many sites of various sizes, all for roughly $30 a night. This may sound steep but the amenities by far make up for it. Each site has a dirt or gravel pad, water and electricity hookups," explains Everette G.
Bathroom facilities: Campground bathroom conditions vary seasonally and by location. "Bathroom facilities were very clean, with showers and laundry. Placed well around the campground," notes Liz H.
