What to do
Lake activities: Wind Creek State Park provides multiple water recreation options beyond horseback riding. "We stayed at site 100 it was an excellent site right on the water next to us was like a private beach. This is the only public access to Lake Martin. Large lake for swimming, boating, fishing," notes Rachel G. who camped at Wind Creek.
Boat rentals: Visitors without personal watercraft can still enjoy Lake Martin. "Boat rentals include two different places. The marina for motorized jon boats and pontoon boats. You can rent these for 4-48 hours. If you're renting one of their boats then you need a vessel license. If you don't have a vessel licenses then you can take the test at the marina," explains Romeo M.
Family recreation: The park offers diverse activities beyond trails and water. "They have a zip line and tree line adventure course, mini-golf, a beach area for swimming, and plenty of fishing spots. They also offer church services on Sunday morning," adds Romeo M. about Wind Creek's facilities.
What campers like
Seasonal variety: Wind Creek offers different experiences throughout the year. "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable! Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs. The bathrooms were very clean. I imagine that summer is a very different experience," reports Erin L. who visited during winter.
Site selection: For equestrian campers, some locations provide better access than others. At R. Shaefer Heard Campground, about an hour from Alexander City, "Lake sites are huge and well spaced out with plenty of shade and privacy, others seemed packed in (as with most parks)," notes Ward, highlighting the importance of strategic site selection.
Family-friendly environment: For those traveling with children while trail riding, Wind Creek offers supportive amenities. "We love camping at Wind Creek. lots to do for the kiddos!" writes Jessi B., while another camper elaborates, "They have playgrounds throughout the campground, trails from 1 mile long to 15 miles long that can be utilized by horse, bike, or on foot."
What you should know
Gate restrictions: When planning equestrian activities, note operating hours. At regional campgrounds like R. Shaefer Heard, "the gate is locked shut from 10 PM to 8 AM, no exceptions unless the elderly host personally deems your emergency worthy," warns Denis P., which could affect early morning or late evening horse transport.
Bathroom facilities: Campground bathhouse quality varies seasonally. "Bathhouses are large and very well taken care of but I did not have any hot water at the time. Bathhouse was also a bit of a hike from site but had parking area," reports Rachel G. about Wind Creek facilities.
Site spacing: Wind Creek's campground layout affects privacy. "Sites are very open to each other but a lot of shade," notes Rachel G., while Matthew K. adds, "Great location, water views. Only negative is that the wifi is not strong, but Verizon signal is great."

Tips from RVers
Site selection for trailers: When bringing horse trailers to equestrian camping areas like Chilton County Minooka Park, about an hour from Alexander City, selection matters. "It's more of an RV park than campground. There are spaces for tents, but they don't have picnic tables. The trees are actually behind the sites," explains Randal B., noting a layout that may work well for horse trailers.
Hookup availability: Wind Creek offers various site types for different equipment needs. "We stayed in C section with full hook-ups," notes Romeo M., while another reviewer elaborates, "Premium campsites that have 50 amp service, water, sewer, cable and waterfront access."
Extended stays: Some equestrian campers appreciate longer booking options. "I spent 2 months there and loved everyday. We hated to leave," shares Matthew M. about Wind Creek, while Amy L. notes at Minooka Park, "loves our long term stay here. Mr. Gerald, Mr. Teddy & Mr. Scott are always more than willing to work with you & help in any way."
