    Skidaway Island State Park Campground

    Beautiful shade

Shaded by old moss dripping live oaks, lots of birds, walking paths and a small museum. This park is clean and well maintained with large campsites and lots of privacy. Close to downtown Savannah, yet so wooded you would never know. Also not far from Tybee Island and the Fort Pulaski National Monument.

There are cabins available, as well as primitive tent sites. RV sites are mostly pull through with water, electric and some sewer. The RV dump is clean and also well maintained. There is recycling, that always warms my heart and is hard to find when traveling! The wash rooms and toilets are clean. The are coin operated washers and dryers.

    Fantastic camping closer to Savannah

This state Park keeps a very nice huge campground. It is well maintained. Our site was next to a new bathhouse with individual rooms for showers and restrooms. The sites are very spacious with a tent pads, picnics tables and a fire ring. They have full service sites and water/electric sites as well as tent sites. Dump station available as well. A very quiet and dark campground 25 minutes to Savannah, 30 minutes to Tybee Island.

    Savannah South KOA

    Beautiful & Clean

This was our very first camping trip (2 adults, 2 kids & a Lab.) We arrived to friendly service & easily found our site (#6.) The tent sites are right on the water, which is home to swans, ducks, turtles & possibly gators too! The sandy pad for our tent was perfect, very level & comfortable. There was plenty of room for our big screened canopy, picnic table, chairs & fire ring. The views from the lake were wonderful & t made waking up to see the sunrise worth it every day.

This campground is about 30mins from Savannah & Tybee Island - both of which we visited & enjoyed.

The bathhouse & general store were very clean & located a short walk from the tent sites. There is also a playground & pool. The campground was quiet, we had no issues at all.

We will definitely be returning soon!

    Skidaway Island State Park Campground

    Largest campsites, great separation

Arrived here for a four-night tent stay. Easy drive in from Tomoka State Park up I-95. Got the last spot at #62 which is very large and has a large tent pad. The electric and water hookups are on the edge of the street, so I had to use both the 75 and 25 foot extension cords to give power to the tent. There's a fire pit and a large picnic table. The restrooms are clean, as well as the laundry room. The dumpster and recycling bin are a bit far from 62, so bring your bicycle, lol. Deer were roaming the grounds in the early morning. Lots of birds singing at sunrise too. Great place. The 45-min drive up to Tybee Island Beach is totally worth it, with beautiful marshes and flatlands along the way. Beach photos included here.

    Excellent Stop tucked off I95

Stayed at #52 and it was very private, level, and clean!

The gravel kept the camper clean; the deck with bench, table and chairs, gas fire pit was super nice; the grill with picnic table were awesome. The plot abuts the grassy area but wasn’t too buggy.

We went on a walk with our girls around the camp site, to the doggy area (small bjt super cute with some see saws, etc.), around the lake, and read the historical signs. We checked out the giant chess board, playground, horse shoes, and corn hole.

COVID restrictions were really well explained. Masks suggested, pool sign up with rules posted. We signed up for 6:30 and the team thoroughly cleaned between us and the precious crew.

The food and store was super and reasonable.

Next time I will def check out the nightly wine or beer tasting.

Can’t say enough good things - will def be back!!

River's End Campground & RV Park

Tight little city campground with amazing location

This is definitely a "city" campground. Spots are tight, you will be very close to your neighbors, but you'll have everything you need, including a fire ring and picnic table. Wi-Fi and cable were also on point.

There is an on-site store which seemed well stocked. However, we tried to order firewood several nights and each night, they were out of firewood.

Bugs are bad. Bring bug spray!

There are two dog parks beside the campground. One for small dogs and another for large dogs. They are nice to have but both could definitely use some work. Even though we have small dogs, we went to the big dog park because the small dog park was in really bad shape.

Walking/biking distance to the beach. Also walkable to really great coffee shop called Tybean Art & Coffee Bar.

*Warning: While Tybee Island, including the campground, is one of the most dog-friendly places I have ever been, you are not allowed to have dogs on the beaches on the island. This is so strange to me, but they are very serious about it. Don't do it.

    Cabretta Island Pioneer Campground

    My favorite place to camp!

I love this campground! Plenty of trees for hammock camping, which is what I prefer, as well as many options for tent set ups. They do have Adirondacks on site for camping. Established fire pit, large covered pavilion with multiple picnic tables, electrical hookups located within pavilion and a shower house equip with sinks and toilets. Walking distance to the beach. Very beautiful! Bike and kayak rental available through on site camp host. Ice and firewood for purchase. You take a ferry to sapelo island, then a bus takes you to Cabretta Campground. Heaven on earth, just don’t forget the bug spray.

    Skidaway Island State Park Campground

Great campground with a lot to do in the park

We had a great site a pull thru facing the woods. Site # 75 it had water and electric hook up, cable, picnic table, cement pad and a fire pit. There are some full hook up sites in the park if you want full hook up. Great place to stay!

We could walk to several hikes in the park from our site.  The ferry trail goes along the water and Sandpiper trail it was nice had a picnic table, a bench and beautiful driftwood.

We hiked the Ferry trail too this was awesome. There are several old stills back there it was a moonshiners paradise. There were old oyster shells along the way where the native Americans lived way back when. There is an observation tower at the river/salt marsh the trail along the water is nice and has some history markers.

We put the kayak in across the HWY from the park and kayaked back towards the park. Do watch the tides when it goes out you could be hi and dry.

Tybee Island is close by we spent an afternoon there during the Pirate Fest in October.

We went to Fort Pulaski it is worth going to see. If you walk the outside wall you can still see mortar in the bricks. There’s cannons, and neat things to see there.

We loved this campground and would return.

Guide to Tybee Island

Cabin camping near Tybee Island, Georgia offers access to diverse coastal ecosystems where tidal marshes transition to maritime forests. The region experiences mild winters with temperatures rarely dropping below 40°F, making year-round cabin stays viable. Summer temperatures often exceed 90°F with high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are common between June and September.

What to do

Beach activities and fishing: Visitors staying at cabins near Fort McAllister State Park can enjoy saltwater fishing from the park's dock. "The sunrise was beautiful over the marsh. When I was here in April the flies were awful but they went away when the sun went down," notes a camper from Fort McAllister State Park Campground.

Historical exploration: Fort McAllister State Historic Park showcases Civil War earthwork fortifications within walking distance from cabin areas. "We planned this trip to coincide with the annual Civil War reenactment of Sherman's last battle on his way to the sea. It was our first reenactment and was interesting," shares a visitor who stayed at Fort McAllister.

Nature trails: Cabin guests at Skidaway Island State Park Campground can access several hiking paths directly from the camping area. "There are a handful of nature trails that are easily accessible from the campground. The campground is also a short drive from Savannah, so it's a great base camp for exploring northeastern Georgia," explains a reviewer.

What campers like

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Skidaway Island cabins provide opportunities to observe local fauna. "We had no problems getting in and the trails/sites are large and clean. Deer and other wildlife are seen every day," reports a visitor staying at Skidaway Island.

Beach proximity: River's End Campground & RV Park cabins offer convenient beach access. "Campground staff were friendly and well organized. Sites had full service hookups. Sites were level. Bathroom and shower were very clean and spacious. Close to downtown and walkable to beaches," mentions a recent guest.

Clean facilities: Cabin guests consistently mention the cleanliness of facilities at most locations. "SO CLEAN!! The workers here are friendly and work hard to keep everything nice and clean. The laundry here takes cards/tap and app pay which was great," comments a visitor about Skidaway Island.

What you should know

Seasonal insect concerns: Mosquitoes and biting flies can be problematic during warm months. "In all fairness we stayed at this campground in the hottest part of the summer at a time when they obviously had not finished cleaning up from a devastating hurricane that hit them last year. Some of the sites had a lot of debris still on them. Huge mosquitoes," reports a camper from Edisto Beach State Park Campground.

Wildlife precautions: Raccoons frequently visit cabin areas after dark. "Do NOT leave food or trash unattended or they will ransack your campsite," warns a Fort McAllister visitor.

Gate restrictions: Some parks have strict entry/exit policies. "Gate locks at 10 pm which really is not enough time if you want a night downtown," notes a Skidaway Island guest.

Seasonal booking challenges: Summer cabin reservations often fill 6-9 months in advance. "Reserve now for this Christmas/New Years eve. This place fills up fast," advises a visitor about River's End Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several parks offer dedicated play areas for children. "This place is Great! I went there with my family about a month ago, they have hiking trails, bike trails, a nature center and plenty of room for kids to ride bikes," shares a visitor from Skidaway Island.

Educational opportunities: Savannah South KOA offers kid-friendly activities. "We spent one night here. It was a typical KOA with a variety of amenities - store, laundry, full hookups, propane, etc. Friendly folks at the check in and a helpful escort to our site," explains a reviewer.

Safety considerations: Some cabin locations require additional supervision due to proximity to water. "The pond has a family of swans, and it's nice to sit on the bench in the evening and watch them," notes a Savannah South KOA visitor.

Age-appropriate activities: Many parks offer structured activities for various age groups. "Our kids loved the gem mining and playground. The staff are friendly and accommodating and the bathrooms were very clean," shares a reviewer about Point South KOA.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When booking cabin accommodations, location within campgrounds matters significantly. "Sites are close together but who cares when you're there for the beach. Staff is wonderful and helpful. Grounds are clean and kept. 2 blocks from north beach," notes a visitor at River's End Campground.

Transportation options: Some cabin locations require additional transportation planning. "Nearby companies will deliver street legal golf carts so you can wander around the shops and restaurants on the main drag or the beachfront," shares a River's End camper.

Supply considerations: Cabin kitchen facilities vary widely between locations. "Downside is having to pay for parking passes," mentions a River's End visitor, highlighting additional costs to consider when planning a trip.

Weather planning: Drainage can be an issue at some locations during heavy rainfall. "It was pretty muddy…people were getting mud all over because of the snow. Not their fault but a hard rain would do the same. Poor drainage," reports a visitor from Skidaway Island.
