At 9,049 acres, Georgia's largest state park is a hiker's and backpacker's haven. Many visitors are surprised to find rolling mountains 80 miles southeast of Atlanta. Above King's Gap is Dowdell's Knob where President Franklin D. Roosevelt sometimes picnicked and pondered world affairs. A life-size sculpture of the president now welcomes visitors to the overlook. Several park amenities were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, including cottages and the Liberty Bell Swimming Pool fed by cool springs. A wooded campground sits near the edge of a small fishing lake, and privately operated stables offer guided horseback rides. In 1921, FDR came to this part of Georgia to swim in naturally warm springs that offered relief from polio. Today, nearby Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site invites visitors to see his modest home, a museum and the pools that first drew him here. 9,049 Acres 22 Cottages 109 Tent, Trailer, RV Campsites 16 Backcountry Campsites 2 Picnic Shelters Group Shelter (seats 95) Group Camp (sleep 75) Pioneer Campground 2 Lakes (15-acre Lake Delanor and 25-acre Lake Franklin) Liberty Bell Swimming Pool Trading Post

    Overview

    R. Shaefer Heard Campground is a waterfront facility on the southern shore of West Point Lake, which spans parts of Alabama and Georgia. This man-made lake has 525 miles of shoreline that provide excellent opportunities for fishing, camping, boating and other recreational activities.

    Recreation

Whether sailing or power boating, West Point Lake is a boater's paradise. There are boat ramps in 34 public recreation areas around the lake, including R. Shaefer Heard, as well as two privately owned full-service marinas. Fishing is one of the most popular activities on the lake. A dozen creeks and more than 40 square miles of lake provide plenty of good fishing spots for the thousands of anglers who fish here regularly. The lake abounds with bass, catfish, crappie and bream. Bank fishing is excellent at many locations, including public fishing piers at Hardley Creek, Rocky Point and McGee Bridge parks. Several trails wind along the lake and through the landscape, including the Lakeside Trail, which is perfect for mountain biking. A wildlife management area of nearly 10,000 acres, located at the upper end of the lake, provides habitat for many types of wildlife. This area offers excellent hunting opportunities.

    Natural Features

Surrounded by rolling fields and deep forests that display outstanding fall foliage, West Point Lake extends 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama-Georgia state line. The campground is forested and overlooks the 25,900-acre lake.

    Nearby Attractions

The lake offers 25 day-use parks. While many people visit the lake to boat and camp, the parks offer a variety of other recreation facilities including tennis courts, ball fields, basketball courts, fishing piers with fish attractors, hiking trails and picnic shelters for individuals or large groups.

    Pine Mountain RV Resort

    Large parks with endless options

Large corporate resort with options for everyone's needs. On the expensive side at $450 per week for an RV site. Cable only offered in certain areas of the park.

True resort includes pool, hot tub, fitness room, activity building, laundry, multiple dog runs and bathhouses. Baths could use an update.

There are yurts of all sizes and cabins too.

Was a great location for us to visit friends. Best RV sites are those in purple...Long concrete pull thrus. Those in pink are very wooded, not very level and close together.

    Pine Mountain RV Resort

    Nice campground

Campground is fairly large with lots of sites for RVs, a few Cabins, yurts, and even tent sites. There is a really nice and well maintained pool, hot tub, and splash area for small kids. The RV sites near the pool are concrete pads and well spaced out. The sites below the pool area are a little tighter and un-level and our lot was covered in ants. Since we arrived late at night we didn’t realize the amount of ants until we woke up to them crawling all over our camper. 30 amp circuit was not adequate. The breaker continually tripped while using small kitchen appliances. Other than that we had a great time and really appreciated the trash pickup twice a day and the Dollar General that was only a 1/4 mile down the road.

    Nice RV resort

We enjoyed our stay at Pine Mountain RV Resort. Our site had full hook ups to include cable TV and grass on both side of the RV which was great for our fur babies. We enjoyed the pool but the hot tub water was green with stuff floating in it. I rated the place four stars, would have been five is we could have used the hot tube.

    Great campground

We stayed here overnight on the way to Fl and wished we could have stayed here longer. The campground is very clean and has a great pool area. The pool area has a kids pool and hot tub along with the regular inground pool. There are not many trees in the campground for shade but if you have an awning it shouldn't make to much of a difference.

    Beautiful and expansive park!

Cabin 1 (one of the original CCC cabins) was perfect for a long Thanksgiving weekend. The cabin feels both rustic and has a modern kitchen, which is great for cooking a celebratory feast. It also has two interior wood-burning stoves, one in the living room and one in the bedroom, so perfect for those chilly nights. We saw some stunning sunsets from the rocking chairs on the side porch. The view over the ridge really makes it feel like you’re in the mountains. We did miss the peak of the fall leaves by a couple of weeks, but we had great hikes every day. Really relaxing trip.

    Greedy run down resort

So our family booked 2021 June to reserve two dockside cabins fully paid for and end up having a family emergency where emergency surgery was needed. Due to the severity of the situation considering brain surgery recovery time, the manager at the time gave us credit rather than a refund and said we had two years to use the credit. Since then the new owners have taken over and decided that they will not honor the credit of the business that they purchased. NOWHERE IN OUR PAPERWORK DOES IT STATE THAT THE CREDIT IS ONLY GOOD FOR ONE YEAR. The sum of the reservation was just about three grand and we have come to learn that we are no longer eligible to use our credit because of the new owners/management company. The resolution they came to was that we rebook, spend another 3 grand more on what we have already purchased and they would ever so graciously credit us one night per cabin. UNACCEPTABLE. WE WILL BE FORWARDING THIS TO THE GEORGIA CONSUMER PROTECTION BUREAU. WORD OF ADVICE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS RESORT. LISTEN TO THE PREVIOUS REVIEWS AS MY FAMILY DID NOT AND WE FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY.

Well maintained roads. Large sites with choice of full sun or shade site.

Staff is great and his campground allows campfires. Pet friendly with two dog parks. Great pool and has cabins and yurts to reserve. Less than three miles from Callaway Gardens and FDR Park. Town of Pine Mountain...two street lights...very quaint sidewalk shops! This place is a hidden treasure.

    Sprewell Bluff Park

    Solitude

Sprewell Bluff Park was an excellent pit stop when we passed through the area. I wish we had scheduled more days there instead of just an overnight. This will be on our list to visit again.

There is an overlook as soon as you enter the park across from the office. Next along the road is the campground.

Reserve ahead because there are only 6 RV sites .(6 cabins too) Shade, a limited view and some privacy.

The Flint river is the nice thing about this park, though the trails are definitely worth exploring.

The picnic and general visitors area by the river was busy when we arrived but we still had plenty of area to explore. The trail was not being used , everyone was in the water or at the pavilion. I did not check on watercraft rentals for the area but there was a boatramp on site and a few kayaks were in the water.

We spent all our time at the general visitors area enjoying the river. When we visit again I want to try out the trails that from the map look like they offer some good views and climb. Pack your water shoes, the rocks are slippery and your toes will thank you. We waded all along the area and there were several people jumping from a large rock in the deeper water.

The campground was quiet and felt very “isolated” after dark, a chance to feel like your in the middle of nowhere with a view.

    Not much but the River

Chattahoochee Bend State Park is located on bend of the Chattahoochee River southeast of Atlanta, near Columbus GA. This is one of Georgia’s largest and newest state parks, with five miles of river frontage on the Chattahoochee. The campground has about 40 sites, some pull-they, but little shade. There are also some walk-in tent sites, and platform sites. The standard sites are water & electric, there is a bathroom/shower, and a dump station. There are cabins if you are not a camper. This is mostly a fishing/hiking park. A boat ramp provides access to the river for boaters and canoeing and there are six miles of wooded trails are open for hiking. There is an observation platform with views of the river and forest, but visibility was limited because of the trees. There isn’t much here but the river trail. But it is close to Columbus, GA, there are some zip-line places near by, and Roosevelt’s Little White House are close.

    Cabins are simple but nice

Cabins have great views with a back porch over the bluffs (with a nice sunset vantage point). Bunk beds are fine (mattresses not that great) and plenty of space inside with extras that make them really convenient (fridge, microwave, good heating). There’s about a 6-mile loop trail overlooking the river that will provide a good workout. The recreation area down by the river is expansive enough for folks to spread out. Here in March it’s too chilly for swimming, but would likely be a nice escape in the summer. Would definitely return.

    Small campground but pretty

Sprewell Bluff Park is about 50 miles south of Atlanta on the Flint River. The campground is small, tent & RV sites starting at $35/night with 30/50 amp electric, water, fire ring, and picnic tables. Most are back in. There is a showroom/bathroom. There are also cabins. The trading post has a variety of camping items and souvenirs. This is primarily a a fisherman’s Park. There is some canoeing and hiking, and a new playground. A boat ramp was added recently. It is somewhat difficult to get here.

Good easy accessible back country camp sites

FD Roosevelt State Park between Pine Mountain and Warm Springs GA offers 23+ miles of hiking trails that are highly trafficked by day hikers, runners, families, and picnickers. Peak seasons can make the trails crowded.

Campsites and cabins are available for drive ins, but there are designated back country camping sites along the trail. Unfortunately information regarding the sites is sparse and vague at best. However you can park at multiple locations to allow you to customize your hiking to camping needs, and all the camp grounds seemed to be imclean and in good shape.

Cabins are definitely the highlight here!

The primitive sites (for tents) were a bit close and not as private as I like.

They offer platform camping and those sites seem a bit more secluded (and are in a separate area from the tent sites).

There are 4 cabins available to reserve and they have great amenities (running water, electricity)

We looked at them once there and think next time we will do this with the kids.

2 rangers live in the park full time and there is a large welcome center/ gift shop with basics for sale should you forget anything.

    You won't be disappointed

Chattahoochee Bend state park is located about 30 minutes west of Newnan, GA. It's located on the Chattahoochee river and is a surprisingly large area. The park has a number of trails for hiking and mountain biking. There are cabins and tent camping sites separate from the rv sites. Rv camping area has large, level gravel sites with water, 30/50 amp electric and cable. Two dump stations help eliminate waiting in long lines when you're ready to hit the road again. Bath house looks like new and is well cared for. On site host is keeping the place in tip top shape. We'll definitely be returning to this park. Highly recommended. Only negative - no cell service while we were there.

    Indian Springs

One of Georgia’s Oldest State Parks

Indian Springs is near Jackson, GA, about an hour south of Atlanta off I-75. The park has 50-60 camp sites for tents and RVs. Most are back in, with water & 30 amp electric. There is a dump station. WiFi is available at the office. There are modern showers/bathrooms and a playground. There is also a pioneer campground and a group campground, plus cabins. According To the park brochure, Indian Springs State Park in Georgia is one of the oldest state parks in the US. The land was acquired from the Creek Indians by the state through the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1825, and was established as a state park in 1931. The park is named for several springs in the area. The Creek Nation used them for centuries to heal their sick. The water from the springs has a strong sulfur smell and taste. I would not recommend drinking it, but there were people filling plastic bottles of the stuff to take home at the stone Spring House built by the CCC during the Depression. There are several hiking trails, and a stream/creek which runs through the park. There are signs about “No Swimming” but I saw several people swimming anyway. There is a large lake with a boat ramp for fishing. The museum showcases the Creek Indians, a resort from the 1800s, and CCC history.

F.D. Roosevelt State Park a natural historical beauty.

This campground offers it all. Set in F.D. Roosevelt State Park you are surrounded by forest, lakes, streams, rock formations and campsites are quiet and private.  We stayed in site #114 directly on the lake.  The state reconfigured some of the sites along the lake and site #114 is no longer on a slope.  Very level space with water, electric and sewer.  Close to a very clean restroom, playground, rental boat ramp and so much more.  Everything a family could want to spend a few days in nature.  Lots to do in the area - Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, city of Columbus, Chattahoochee River, Little White House, etc.  Highly recommend this jewel in Georgia.

    Nice, lots of amenities

Nice state park. It has a lake with boat rental available as well as lots of hiking paths and a playground. As with many state parks, it is crowded and the sites are close together. Pine Mountain is a beautiful town. I suggest visiting the Little White House, Wild Safari, and Callaway Gardens, which are all very close. If you like overlooks, Dowdell’s Knob is also worth checking out.

    Great little gem

Quiet location. Sites are back in but easy back in. The bathhouse is clean, the sites are gravel and pretty much level. The river park area is nice, plenty of picnic tables and access to most of the walking trails. Just a great place to get away, yet you aren’t too far from town. Electric and water at the site, dump station on your way out. Such a great find.

    Quite the place

Set back in a wooded area on a nice little lake. Boats permitted but max HP is 10. Sights are nice, some closer than others. Bathhouse was taken care of and close to Dausset trails if you Mountainbike. Miles of fun trails that connect to the campground. The Springs were fun with a lot of history. Beware of drinking the spring water. Lots of people bottle it up but if you don’t like sulfur I highly do not recommend even taking a sip. Fun little putt-putt course for the kids in the park. It was a nice getaway.
