What to do
Hiking trails: Stone Mountain Park Campground features multiple trail options including a challenging climb to the summit. "We loved these grounds. They were clean and there was easy access to bathrooms. The hike to the top was a challenge, but the views were worth it," says Judy B.
Fishing opportunities: Hard Labor Creek State Park offers fishing access at two lakes. "My husband and son enjoyed fishing and paddle boarding right behind our site. There was a lot to see and do," notes Susan K. about her lakeside site at Stone Mountain Park Campground.
Water recreation: Indian Springs State Park Campground has a small lake with boat rentals available. "We rented kayaks and rode bikes all weekend! The cabins were updated and very cute perfect for a weekend away," shares Casey L.
What campers like
Proximity to Atlanta: Campers appreciate the cabin options that allow quick escapes from the city. "Good for a quick get away while still having access to 'city life'. There are some beautiful spots close to the water where you do feel like you're deep in nature," explains Jessica D. of Stone Mountain Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Red Top Mountain State Park Campground maintains spotless bathhouses. "Like cleaner than a Publix bathroom. Kid friendly," notes Cris C. Another camper mentions, "Great staff, grounds very and clean neatly kept" at Atlanta South RV Resort.
Privacy levels: Some cabin locations offer more seclusion than others. At Chattahoochee Bend State Park Campground, "Platform sites are super nice. Short walk into the sites, right beside a river. Not much privacy between platforms but every time we have been it hasn't been full or crowded," says Jessica D.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Book early for summer weekends. "We visited in late April and could only find a campsite during the week. Despite Covid-19, the park was open for day-use and overnight guests," reports Nancy W. about Fort Yargo State Park Campground.
Site selection matters: At Fort Yargo State Park Campground, "If you're like me and appreciate a bit of privacy when camping, the walk-in campsites at Fort Yargo are the place to go. Just a short 1-2 minutes walk from your car and bathrooms, but you feel much more secluded than the campsites in the regular campground," advises Amalia K.
Seasonal considerations: Summer cabin rentals book quickly and can be hot. "We camped on the raised platforms by the river. The other campgrounds are away from the river back in the woods. The tent sites are a bit too close together for my liking," explains Kayla S. about Chattahoochee Bend State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Educational programs: Stone Mountain Park offers junior ranger activities. "Although most of the facilities are closed right now, the park staff and volunteers were constantly working to ensure everything is clean and working properly," notes George & Patty C.
Playgrounds available: Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground has family-friendly amenities. "There is a putt putt (mini golf) course. You can rent kayaks and kayak in the lake. They offered a kayak by moonlight group tour that was fun," shares Maethea R.
Transportation considerations: Some parks provide internal transit. "There's all kind of activities for the kids. They have free transportation within the park/campground area. Helpful staff too," mentions Harvey B. about Stone Mountain Park.
Tips for RVers
Leveling requirements: Check site details before booking cabins or RV sites. "The only downfall was that the trailer needed a lot of leveling. But it was totally worth it. Our site was on the lake," reports Susan K. at Stone Mountain Park.
Site specifications: Large rigs need careful planning. "Sites are a little close, but it's big rig friendly, and so is the staff. Donna in the office was very kind and helpful, and so were all of the guys working the grounds," says Jason E. about Atlanta South RV Resort.
Road conditions: Interior roads vary by park. "Heavily wooded sites that are not well maintained. Very narrow roads in the campground with lots of pot holes. Not the easiest state park to pull a travel trailer in," warns Brock D. about Red Top Mountain State Park.
