This is a Wildlife Management area - and this campground is a hunt camp. Free, no reservations, primitive. Be prepared to pack in and pack out your trash.

Do not need a reservation and it's a free campsite, but you must have either a hunting license of some type (fishing is okay too) or a land pass available at the gate.

Please check for active hunting season before attempting to camp. Open almost all year round, but there are a few times it is not.

    Spirit of the Suwanee

Very large unique campground it offers tent camping, RV camping, camping with horses & cabins. Most famous for their events & concerts. Most campers bring their golf cart & ride the trials. There is a restaurant/bar on site that has live music on on weekends; there is also a general store that has most anything you may need, as well as a Starbucks. Great weekend getaway if your in South Georgia/north Florida.

    Great getaway

We stayed for two nights tent camping. The sites and bathrooms were both clean. Lots of activities, we really enjoyed the boardwalk. Also very affordable rentals too, we took a boat out for two hours for some fishing. Staff was friendly! We saw tons of wildlife there.

Peace and quiet on the water

Had an enjoyable weekend tent camping here and small game hunting in the forest.

Bob the volunteer host was super nice, and the bathrooms were very clean.

The mosquitos were a little annoying right after sundown, but quickly left once we had a fire going.

Definitely camping here again and bringing the kayaks next time.

Beautiful campground on the water conveniently located. Lots of animals to see and the staff is outstanding, friendly and accommodating. They fed us dinner on Saturday and we’re so kind. Only two tent sites but they are huge and shaded. Very pet friendly.

    Sandy campground

Nice camp ground. Most of the space were pull through for Rv/campers. They were pretty narrow spaces. Lots of trees and shade. The entire campground was dirt and some gravel. The bathrooms were ok. Not kept the cleanest, but not the worst I’ve seen.

Super close to the river for easy access. Be prepared it almost rains every day in Florida, so if tent camping be prepared for rain.

    Remote, isolated, free

A primitive site with about a dozen tent sites or more. Trash cans and out toilets are on site, with pick nick tables each campsite. Dirt road access, dirt road/undeveloped area other than the tables, trash cans, and out toilets. Beautiful views to the east through missy covered cypress trees with palmetto and pine forest behind to the west.

    Very remote, AMAZING night skies

Kayaking was our favorite part, but you definitely get very very close to all the wildlife including big gators. Boats are for rent if you prefer that. At night there is very little light pollution and you will see more stars than anywhere else around this area. It’s incredible. Our tent site was very close to the water, we could hear gator activity and noises all night.

A previous review stated this is a free site - no longer! Camp host came around and collected $10/night when we arrived

    • big trees with Spanish moss
    • lake views for half of the sites
    • pit toilets
    • spaces are variable size - but we’ll spread out with varying privacy
    • doesn’t drain well! When we were there, we had some big puddles. Be careful if tent camping after a big rain! Road was fairly pitted.

A site for nearly every preference.

There are backcountry tent sites to full hookups; or if you prefer you can rent a cabin or tree house. There's a pool and game room if you like, or if you want to rent a canoe and float the beautiful Suwannee River, that's available at the canoe outpost. Horses and riding lessons are available at the stables.

Live Music is a presence at the park which hosts weekend shows at the restaurant and bar, and the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park is host to several big music festivals of all genres.

    Busy Place - Great Fun

This is one of the busiest campgrounds in Florida. Their HUGE festivals draw in matching crowds so check their schedule before booking so your experience is one that matches your desires. We camped along the river - primitive tent camping. We were told to just go out and pick a spot and we got a nice one. there was a lot of golf cart traffic into the evening - they offer rentals and this location is very large so to see it all folk cruise around the trails on them. We were only staying one night and launching from there for an over night kayak trip on the Suwannee River. Lots of places to explore and sights to see when exploring! great staff and concession center. they also have tree house rentals, RV spaces and cabins.

    Best stop on the Suwannee

This is a very large are to visit. So much to see right along the river, the Carillon Tower, great campsites, so many craft and arts shows, Christmas season here is a delight with all the holiday lights. I can't say enough about this wonderful park! Beautiful pavilions right on the river are popular for small wedding party photos, easy stop from the river if kayaking by. Nearby town of White Springs is fun to explore to! Not far from Big Shoals, another great spot on the river! Visit American Canoe Outfitters for a day or multi day trip on the river and Fat Bellies has some great BBQ! AS with all parks - the busy season is BUSY! RV sites fill up most - tent camping is much more relaxed and more private of an area. Nice clean bathrooms. Firewood usually available at the gate

Woods Ferry River Camp — Suwannee River Wilderness Trail

Fantastic River Camp - River Access Only

One of 5 river camps along the Suwanee River and one of the nicest. This system of river camps currently is first come first served with no fee - but that could change soon and screened sleeping platforms may require reservations. Reservations can be made for groups and are suggested. Our outfitter American Canoe Adventures makes our reservations for us. We stay here at least 2 times a year as the Suwannee River river camps are spaced a days paddle apart and are wonderfully convenient (especially in summer when afternoon rains come daily and bugs are everywhere).

Outfitters have road access to help with deliveries of gear and supplies - Road access not open to the public. Most of the time you will have a camp host on the property.

River camp has bath house with water and electric, grills, fire pits, tent camping area and screened sleeping platforms with electric, lighting and ceiling fans. Many units also have hooks to hang you hammocks. Sleeping pavilions typically will hold 6-8 persons and have small corner tables with small bench. Each has picnic table and fire ring. You will find a broom in each shelter - please sweep out and leave clean for next group. Camp host oftentimes has firewood available for sale. There are trails to explore and if you look closely you will find remains and signs of old turpentine harvesting in the area close to the camp in the forest. Chuck-will's-widow, owls and frogs will serenade you at night.

Tent camping area has fire pit and picnic table to share with others

There are canoe racks off platform visible at lower water levels or you can tie boat up under ramp. At high water you will be able to paddle up walkway to get out. - please turn boat to side of railing and secure as far up ramp as possible to leave room for others coming in to get their vessels up. There are also canoe racks at top of walkway. Always take paddles, PFD's, fishing equipment, food items and valuables to your camping area - do not leave in boats. There are raccoons and other nocturnal creatures and an occasional bear passing through.

    Gators

The campground is a real gem. It's beautiful!

Many nice sites that look like camping in the jungle. Water & electric sites. Some are small- more like tent sites.

Sites- 1-25 seem larger. you could get a bigger rig into them.

    Sites 26-58 seemed smaller.

Site 39 was very small. tent only.

Sites 59-64 are pull throughs. The rest are back in.

We had site 41 which was plenty big for us. It was also near the bathroom.

If you like being close to the facilities, 40/41/42 are the spots to choose.

There's 2 comfort stations. The bathroom/showers are individual units. They were very clean for a state park in the swamp!

It was buggy & we were there the end of April.

Thursday night was dead quiet, but the weekend was busy.

The dump station has only one dump.

This is a small state park- only 120 acres, but camping here is definitely worthwhile.

    Lovely Family Friendly Spot

What a nice local campground! Many amenities! Lots for the kids to do, pond with ducks, playground, nice store, Camping for everyone - tents, cabins, RV's. You can even hang a hammock (with tree safe straps) in a few places! Staff was wonderful. Bathrooms have code to access an are very clean. Nice Laundry facility that costs $1.50 per wash and same to dry. We stayed in May. Ground was very soft in tent camping area - do not drive vehicle past parking pad (we saw where folks before us got stuck). Please is VERY well lit at night, if you need it dark to sleep you will want to be prepared.

Very close to many local attractions like White Springs, Suwannee River State Park, Stephen Foster State Park, and more. Many wonderful local restaurants, and antique shops to! We use ACA Canoe Outfitters in White Springs for our paddling trips and LOVE Fat Bellies BBQ - both 15 min away in White Springs. If you go don't miss visiting the "spring house"!

Woods Ferry River Camp — Suwannee River Wilderness Trail

Ranger Review Primus Lite XL Stove at Woods Ferry River Camp

    Campground Review

Woods Ferry River Camp is the first in a series of river camps available about a day’s paddle apart on the Suwannee River From White Springs (River mile 159.3 GPS Location: N 30 21.22, W 82 51.37 ) to Adams Track (River mile 85.5 GPS Location: N 30 2.10, W 83 1.14). On our recent visit River Level was at 52 making it easy to get out of kayak on a small sandy area under ramp. One of the storage racks had been damaged in recent storm/flooding but one still remained and held our 6 boats easily. There are carts to help you get your gear up the high 200 yard, winding ramp to get to the camp. Recent weather has taken a toll on this favorite camp of ours. We stayed in screened pavilion # 3 and found the railing to be loose and many of the installed hammock hooks bent down and unusable. Shower in the men’s room was scheduled for repair so we “stood guard” for our male camping companion to shower in ladies room. Camp hosts were wonderful and had ice as well as firewood available “for donation”. Fire pits were all clean as well as the rest of the facility! There is a large pavilion with picnic tables and electricity available for use with a large fire pit and grills. Other than routine maintenance needing done this place is holding up well. It is still free to stay at the river camps. There is a very nice tent camping area also! Screened pavilions need a reservation during busy time of year (which I would suggest always try to get). Our outfitter offers a service to shuttle gear to site for a fee. This trip there was a terrible storm front that came through and we did not get to finish our trip and outfitter was able to pick us up at this location. As we were aware of the trouble we could have with the weather we were able to get a call out luckily( limited cell service here) and arranged for our outfitter American Canoe Adventures – to pick us up. The hard part was moving all our boats from the river up to where the van could get to. Long ramp in the pouring rain – not fun. You cannot drive into Woods Ferry, this is a river access location only, except for camp hosts and permitted outfitters.

    Product Review

On this kayak camping trip I had the opportunity to test out the Primus Lite XL . This stove comes with a 1 liter pot (good to feed 2 persons) that actually connects to the stove to prevent spills! This connection between burner and pot made for a secure unit making it much easier to stir the pot! The heat flows through the specially designed bottom of the pot which had fins built in, this heats the pot and items you are cooking very efficiently! This new feature also aids in keeping wind from carrying away your heat! Another bonus feature is the igniter button – no need to carry extra lighter for this stove. The clear lid with strainer, footrest, and folding stove handles make this a complete package. Well built, seems like with will hold up well in the back country and light/compact enough for backpacking. Primus did a great job with this set!. As a rebel I also had to test burner without the included pot and unit provided stable support and cooked evenly. Great gas saving stove! Thank you #PrimusAmerica !

    Perfect for "primitive" camping

Arrived here for a three-night tent stay in early October after staying at the George L. Smith State Park in Georgia. This place has soo much potential. It was quite deserted. Switched from spot 324 to 375 next to the lake where it was more level. What's up with the restrooms though? There are a couple of spots where port-a-potties have been set up. They are ventilated and well lit, but they have no water though they have what are supposed to be running toilets and even sinks. There's a raised platform with shower stalls, but there's no running water?

The place is otherwise very beautiful and peaceful, but that is also because it's absolutely empty. Haven't seen any other tents here, just a couple of small campers in this section. One the other side of the lake there were about 12 big rigs, far from here. This place is enormous. Lots of bugs. Never seen these many flies in all 13 camps visited in Florida, Georgia, or South Carolina so far.

Very well stocked Country Store within the park, and Walmart is five miles away.

Charlton County Traders Hill Recreation Area and Campground

    Sublime Primitive Camping Oasis

If you don’t mind being out in the boondocks without much of anything (underscore the word ‘anything’ twice here), then you will instantly fall in love with Charlton County Traders Hill Rec Area – because there is basically almost nothing here.

Except for, everything. Meaning that you’ll discover here pristine natural surroundings, Spanish moss drenched ancient Oaks and Cypress, small twisting little river joints that will slowly, but uncertainly have you navigate your way down the very murky dark waters of the St. Mary’s River, which is the natural dividing line between Florida and Georgia. The land in this campground is flat, somewhat sandy, mixed with the black and red Georgia soil wherein you’ll find a thin film of grass throughout the campground, which is interrupted by these most magestic Magnolia trees that have been strategically placed by God and nature throughout these pristine grounds.

That said, this place is rough and, again, without all of the basic amenities that I’m typically used to when camping out in my tent. For RV’ers, it appears as though all your basic amenities are covered for – flat pebble-strewn slab to park your vehicle, coupled with electric, water and sewage lines. There’s a little camp store on the premises, but it was closed the whole time we were there. The restroom and shower facilities would be more at home in 3rd world countries than in the US, so I would highly recommend a dry bathing alternative.

That aside, one of the best attractions is the very easy water access to St. Mary’s River, where we dipped our kayak and canoe in for what we thought would be a good 30 or 45 minute bit of paddling, only to spend more than 4 hours exploring this very peaceful and enchanting body of water. I truly hope you discover this place for yourself – it is magical.

    Happy Camping!

    Huge campground

We like this campground because you can rent a golf cart and drive around and explore a ton. We went in Dec 2018 and March 2020. We were the last tent campers they allowed there. Hopefully they are renovating the restrooms. They are truly awful, but we made it work. We love the little beach on the river, the treehouse and the bat house. Our evening entertainment was driving up to the bat house to watch them all come out at sunset. It’s super cool to see. Never made it before sunrise to watch them return. I look forward to them allowing tent campers to return... hopefully they will have done some work on the restrooms.

    Okay campground and great park!

The campground was just a bit tight for my preferences as a tent camper (especially as it was fully booked over a holiday—Thanksgiving—weekend), but we still had a great time. We rented a Jon boat, which let us see a lot of the park. Would definitely return.
