Little Manatee River State Park offers additional horse camping opportunities beyond its four standard equestrian sites. Located within a 27-mile radius of Venice, the park features primitive camping options along its 12-mile trail system. The camping area connects directly to riding paths that wind through Florida's natural ecosystems, allowing equestrians to maximize their time on the trails without breaking camp.
What to do
Fossil hunting along Peace River: Peace River Campground provides access to prime fossil hunting areas where visitors can search for shark teeth and other ancient specimens. "Peace River is full of alligators in the spring/summer time. They didn't bother us but they also didn't seem too afraid of us either," notes Leslie M., who recommends taking safety precautions when searching for fossils.
Mountain biking at Alafia River State Park: The park offers extensive trail systems designed specifically for mountain bikers of all skill levels. "I go here every year to see all of the various birds that migrate here, as well as to enjoy a little bit of mountain biking," shares Jill R., highlighting the dual appeal of wildlife viewing while cycling through the varied terrain.
Primitive hiking at Myakka River State Park: The wilderness preserve section offers secluded hiking trails away from the main campgrounds. "We arrived at the gate! After hearing of the wilderness preserve we decided to go ahead and get the permit... After driving back to the parking area, we realized we had the 600 acres to ourselves," reports Christina L., describing the solitude available to hikers.
What campers like
Lakeside camping access: At Hardee Lakes Park, primitive sites offer direct lake access with water hookups. "I was excited to discover all these primitive sites with water are right on the lake," writes Mack Daddy Van L., appreciating the convenience of waterfront camping with basic amenities.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The region's parks provide excellent chances to spot native Florida wildlife. "Myakka is not far from home and a great spot to visit for overnight trips or day trips! There are bike rentals I have taken advantage of, plenty of walking trails, and you can rent airboats," explains Alyssa D. about the various ways to observe wildlife.
Trail connectivity: Many equestrian campsites connect directly to trail systems. "Perfect place to camp and take your horses with you. Very nice facilities. Miles of horseback trails to ride. Very nice horse stalls to put horses in overnight," reports Donna H. about Alafia River State Park Campground, highlighting the integrated trail access.
What you should know
Water restrictions and closures: Some parks experience periodic service interruptions. "I've camp at this park on 3 occasions. Due to hurricanes and a prolonged drought the park is only partially functional. For over 2 years there has been no drinking water," warns Fred M. about Myakka River State Park, noting that visitors should bring their own water supplies.
Seasonal wildlife activity: Alligators become more active during certain times. "Went to drain the tanks yesterday morning and a large sounding gator started to growl territorially at me. So heads up with your pets please," cautions Jenelle J. at Palmetto Ridge Campground, emphasizing the importance of pet safety near water.
Primitive site proximity: At some parks, the primitive sites lack privacy buffers. "Only iffy thing I'd call out is how tight the primitive campsites are to each other. It was dead when I came, but had my neighboring sites been occupied, I wouldn't have enjoyed my time as much," explains Mack Daddy Van L. about Hardee Lakes Park.
Tips for camping with families
Choose quieter weekday visits: For families seeking peaceful equestrian camping experiences near Venice, weekday bookings offer less crowded conditions. "We stayed here a couple of years ago and loved the piece and quiet! My husband enjoyed riding his fat tire along with our dog," shares Karen & Terry S. about Hardee Lakes Park.
Look for trail difficulty ratings: When horseback riding with younger family members, select appropriate trails. "They have great primative sites, with hikes that vary from 2 miles to 14 miles to camp sites. Beware of heat, bring plenty of water. Dont depend on water pumps," advises Michael K. about Myakka River State Park.
Plan for water activities: Many parks offer multiple water recreation options. "This great Park has full and partial hook ups for all styles of camping to include hammock camping. There are 6 primitive campgrounds; group camping and Cabins too! You will have 39 miles of hiking trails and off road/mountain biking at your pleasure," explains Travyl Couple about Myakka River State Park.
Tips from RVers
Check site surfaces: RV sites vary greatly in surface conditions. "The Palmetto Ridge pull thrus are gigantic. I would say the vegetation gives semi privacy but they aren't on top of each other so it's not like you're looking right at your neighbor. There is a picnic table & a fire ring. Gravel sites but pretty level," notes Amanda W. about Palmetto Ridge Campground.
Research campground layout: Some parks have distinct camping areas with different amenities. "Good size lot, #10, with electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. Clean dump station. Natural trees providing privacy between lots. A lot of walking trails for people and horses," shares Patti D. about Little Manatee River State Park Campground, highlighting the equestrian-friendly features.
Prepare for variable conditions: Weather and site conditions can change rapidly. "Sites and facilities are nice and clean. Sites were decent size. Good for RVs and tents. However, sites are not shaded at all and because of the quarry and stagnant water the mosquitoes were RIDICULOUS," warns AJ G. about Alafia River State Park Campground.
