Jackson Hole? In Florida? I know, I was surprised too when I saw the sign for this Fish Camp. You’ll find this sea level slice of hidden respite tucked away on the bend of the Indian River in Florida’s central coast. There’s a very small circuit that you’ll navigate where the center is intersected with a short pathway (barely a road) that will take you directly to this nice riveting current of frackish water– a blend of salt and fresh water– perfect for catching some hybrid fish that live in this type of water. And if you’re a kayaker or canoer like I am, then I couldn’t recommend this place moreso for its direct access to this wonderful river basin.
As for the surroundings, you’ll discover that while there’s just a few spots for RV’ers, most of the real estate is leased out to longer term renters who by the looks of things, don’t look like they’ll be leaving anytime soon. Quite a few of the RV’s and dwellings tend to be somewhat aged and dilapidated, while other spots the locals have gotten quite creative with their setups. Head on over to the Tiki Hut and ask for Byron for some pretty great happy hour elixirs most every day. For those that are rolling up with their mobile living room en towe, you’ll be sure to find all the standard hookups (electric, water and sewage). Picnic tables and community BBQ’s are scarce, so bring your own.
Insider’s tip? Here’s 3. First, given the frackish water, you’ll discover mussel beds and sharp sea urchins line the more shallow areas of the riverbed, so if you have an inflatable paddleboard or kayak, be incredibly careful. Second, when you get tired of grilling fish or roasting hot dogs over the fire, escape to Goodrich Seafood & Oyster House (https://www.goodrichseafoodandoysterhouse.com), which has been around since 1910, for some outstanding views of the Indian River where they have all you can eat fish on Fridays and all you can eat Shrimp on Saturdays … and don’t miss the Fried Green Tomatoes! Third, if you’ve got the chance to be out on the water, make sure to stop by A&W Island and head to the south end called Pepe Point where you can throw a line to catch some pretty amazing fish.
Happy Camping!
