Dolphin Isle Marina & RV Park

    Quiet, seals, deer and wildlife

We love this place. We've been here for 2 months now off and on. The site we are on is located between a marina and the Noyo River. It allows for easy access for paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming and seals, sea lions and other wildlife. Last night a 6 point deer walked past our site. The rates are pretty reasonable and the people that run the campgrounds are great to work with. There is a kayak/sup rental as well next door. If you're lucky the maintenance guy will sing or whistle while doing his work, and makes for a good show! It does close down except for long-term use in the winter time (November-??) due to coastal seasonal flooding. Internet can be occasionally spotty but we use AT&T and Verizon which work well. Cable is provided. Full hook ups. Due to Covid enquire about the bathroom situation when calling to book. Walking distance from the harbor and a quick bike ride to the bluffs overlooking the ocean.

Caspar Beach RV Park & Campground

    Steps from the beach

Its a super cramped campground for big rigs. Much nicer and more privacy if tenting. The best spot is “ocean view” but its time to change the name. That site is for tenting but can accommodate a small rv or van. The vegetation is so tall there is no actual ocean view. Restrooms are clean. Showers coin operated. Awesome location. Friendly folks. Good camp store.

Letts Lake Campground — Mendocino National Forest

    Dry Campig for 35' RV

We originally were going to Fouts Creek Campground but it was HOV weekend (Presidents). Lots of dirt bikes and law enforcement. National Forest pulled in officers from surrounding forests and Sheriff Depts.

With a 35' Class A our options were limited. A Ranger suggested Letts Lake. There is a narrow one lane newly paved road that goes up to Dixie Glade equestrian camp, from there it is dirt. Taking it slow, we made it to Letts Lake and parked in spot 12. It was a tight fit, but we made it.

There are two additional campgrounds at the opposite end of the lake but they are closed for winter. As there was no water or trash service there was no fee. Typically $5.00)

The lake is small with no motors allowed but easy to walk around. Pet friendly in fact all but one campsite had at least one dog.  Fire damage to the forest is substantial but new growth is already starting

    Middle Creek Campground

    Great place for dry camping

Beautiful location, campground was easily accessible going up Elk Mountain Road. Camped in Site 11, pull through, no hook ups, nice picnic table, grill and fire pit. Vault toilets, no showers. There is potable water close to the campsites. Very quiet during the week, it did get noisier on the weekends, but everyone settled down for the evening.

Westport Beach RV Park and Campground

    All the ammenities!

We spent 4 nights here with our travel trailer. We had a site with full hook ups, including sewage (no need for dumping station!!). This is a great campground that is right on the beach! It has showers, flushing toilets, a little store, fire wood for sale, dish washing station, and even WiFi! The campground was very clean and really perfect for families! Couldn’t recommend more!

    Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort

Great for families with little ones

We stopped here overnight on our way up the coast. Well maintained, nice facility and friendly staff. Definitely wouldn’t come back for long term camping as we have older teenagers. The facility is definitely geared toward families with smaller kids. It was great for what we needed.

    Gualala Point Regional Park

    Small but beautiful county campground

General: 19 general and six walk-in campsites among giant redwood and Bay Laurel trees on the Gualala River. Sites 17 & 18 are a double site.

Site Quality: Level sites with bear box, picnic table, and fire ring. Site One’s camper pad fit our 18-foot camper van, but it would not accommodate anything much larger. Several other camper pads looked short as well. No hookups.

Bath/Shower house: Three individual units with toilet, sink, soap, and paper towels. One shower that takes quarters – three minutes for $2.00.

Activities: There is a trail that leads through the walk-in sites, under Highway One, and to the beach, approximately 1.5 miles. You can also drive to the day-use area for a shorter walk. We were there on a weekday but there were many activities scheduled for the upcoming weekend including kayaking on Bodega Bay, outside yoga, and healthy hustle circuit training – I was sad to miss all of these options.

This campground is beautiful and peaceful. But note that although we did not encounter any, several other campers experienced over-eager raccoons while eating dinner. There was also a sign warning of mountain lions but we did not encounter any. Shout-out to the ranger who shared a lot of good information about the area.

Hidden Pines RV Park & Campground

    Quiet, no frills but safe

The owner is very accommodating but doesn’t give refunds. That didn’t affect me but I’ve heard lots of people complain. The sites are close together but full hookups (except sewer) and a picnic table and fire ring at each one. Dump station is free to campers and was easy to use. Check after noon for the most updated info. Mike the owners was very helpful and so was his staff. I’ve heard there’s a pool but I didn’t use it. A bit pricey but so is everyone else in the area. I felt safe there, and would stay again.

    Hendy Woods State Park Campground

    Family Freindly Redwood Camping

Spacious sites with fire pit, wooden food box and picnic table. Potable water available at spigots along the roads every 3-4 campgrounds. The campground has restrooms with sinks (bring your own soap), flush toilets, coin operated showers. Campground ha easy access to hiking, swimming in the river, and wine tasting just up the road. There a local produce stands just up the road where you can expect to buy tasty Gravenstien apples if you visit in August! Mosquitoes are present so bring bug spray! If you forget anything, there is a Mom and Pop store up the road that sells almost everything you need including batteries, tableclothes, butane, ice and firewood for about $6 a bundle. The campground host sells firewood for $8 a bundle. Campsites are for 8 people maximum. Even with 8 people, we didn't feel cramped. Sites come with 2 parking passes. If you have more than two cars in your party, you can pay for additional parking passes. Dog friendly! I was the only person in my group to have cell service here and I have Verizon.

Guide to Willits

Camping options near Willits vary from oceanfront sites to forest settings, with elevations ranging from sea level to 2,000 feet. The climate transitions from coastal fog to inland warmth as you move east, creating distinct camping environments throughout the region. Summer temperatures typically reach 85°F in Willits while staying cooler near the coast at 65-70°F.

What to do

Beach activities: At Westport Beach RV Park and Campground, visitors enjoy direct beach access. "This is by far one of the best places to camp on the California coast! The camp spots are right on the water and it is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset!" notes Rebecca A. The beach allows fires and offers privacy depending on the season.

Disc golf: Families traveling through Willits can enjoy the disc golf course at Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort. "The disc golf course offers beautiful views when on top of the course, but watch out for poison oak!" advises Paul H. The course provides both recreation and scenic vistas.

Paddling: Several campgrounds near Willits offer water activities at no extra charge. "They offer FREE canoe/paddle boating," states Melissa C. about The Aurora RV Park & Marina. The park provides life jackets, making this a convenient option for campers without their own watercraft.

What campers like

Family-friendly amenities: Many parents appreciate the kid-focused facilities at campgrounds near Willits. "A petting zoo, water play, pool, arcade and events. We were there for movie night. They had a big screen and showed a film for the kiddos," shares Donna D. about Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort. These amenities keep children entertained throughout the stay.

Privacy options: For campers seeking seclusion, tent camping areas often provide more distance between sites. "The back loop for tent/car camping... it's lush, shaded and pretty quiet. My spot (13) had a babbling stream next to it, and empty spots on all sides," explains Jessi P. about Caspar Beach RV Park & Campground.

Ocean views: Coastal campgrounds offer direct ocean access. "You can camp right on the beach or just steps away... You can walk to the beach from your campsite and watch the sun set," explains Julie B. about Westport Beach RV Park and Campground. These oceanfront sites fill quickly during peak season.

What you should know

Road conditions: Access to remote beaches requires proper vehicles. "You'll at least need awd to go the whole way. Takes about 30 mins," notes Nate T. about driving to Usal Beach Campground. Numerous reviewers mention challenging roads to coastal sites.

Seasonal factors: Weather varies significantly from coast to inland areas. "This is a tight and wet park. It is inside a gully that gets very little sun. I stayed the end of December through New Years... But damp," explains JMark H. about Caspar Beach RV Park. Winter camping along the coast brings moisture and limited sunshine.

Payment options: Some campgrounds have specific payment requirements. "Sites are level camping site. Full hookup for $37 with discount," states Steve about Redwood Empire Fair RV Park. Always check payment policies, as several parks don't accept credit cards.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities: Children enjoy the water features at certain campgrounds. "My kids absolutely loved it and so did I! We were just a few steps from the pool, which was clean, but pretty cold... The splash pad was a family favorite," shares Erika L. about their experience at Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort.

Entertainment options: Look for campgrounds with built-in activities. "Cool little camping spot outside of Willits. Has a western themed town that hold little dances and ice cream parlor parties for kids," notes Amaya L. These structured activities help keep children occupied.

Site selection: When camping with children, site location matters. "Designed for families... A petting zoo, water play, pool, arcade and events," says Donna D. However, another camper notes, "This is a great family campground. Bring your kids, plenty to do for them. No kids? Want to be at a quiet campground? Enjoy nature? Not here!" This contrast helps families make informed decisions.

Tips from RVers

Site spacing: Many rv parks Willits, California and surrounding areas have tight spacing between sites. "The RV park is part of a mobile home park. What you get is a space to park, water, electric and sewage," states Harry S. about Harbor RV Park. Expect close neighbors at most facilities.

Hookup details: When selecting RV parks near Willits, California, verify hookup specifications. "Each site has 30 amp service, water, sewer hookups. Gravel sites with small patches of grass," notes a reviewer about Redwood Empire Fair RV Park. Several parks offer full hookups, but amperage varies by location.

Navigation challenges: Large RVs may struggle with access at some parks. "The turns driving around might make RV camping a little tricky," warns Hayley K. Always check road clearances and turn radii before booking, especially at forest campgrounds with narrow access roads.
