Best Equestrian Camping near El Nido, CA

Musch Camp is an easy one mile hike from from the Trippet Ranch Parking Lot in Topanga State Park. If you want a longer hike you can hike up the East Topanga Fire Road and then drop down into Musch Camp on the Backbone Trail from Eagle Junction. This will add a few more miles to your hike and allow you to make a loop by hiking back to Trippet Ranch via the one mile Musch Trail.

The cost is $7 per person per night. You can pay at the Entrance Station at the Trippet Ranch Parking Lot or the Iron Ranger at the camp. If you are parking your vehicle overnight in the parking lot please leave a note on your dashboard so that the Rangers are aware that you are camping at Musch Camp.

The campground has around 6 campsites in two sections surrounded by fencing. Each site has a picnic table.  FIRES ARE NOT ALLOWED. There is also a restroom with flush toilets' and sinks as well as a water spigot. There are also horse corrals across the trail from the campground. Some of the sites have shade.

There are meadows down the trail on either side of the campground. There is limited cell service at the campground.

Campground Review

We come to this campground throughout the year, and its one of our favorite spots for summer camping when we're short on time. It's an hours drive from LA and because the campground is at elevation it stays cooler during the hot months. This is my third review for this campground, and one thing I will say that I've noticed over time is that as the popularity of the campground has increased, so has the noise. We've been kept awake by other campsites on three different occasions now. Part of the issue is that rangers aren't regularly monitoring in order to enforce the quiet hours. We usually only see rangers come around in the morning. With that said, we still like Horse Flats because there is usually a spot or two open if we arrive on a Saturday. Also, the sites are relatively well spread out compared to other SoCal camping options. And it's dog friendly, which is a must for us.

Things to know before coming

• bring all your water with you. There is no running water at this campground
• purchase firewood before driving up the mountain. I've unfortunately seen too many campers collecting wood around the campground to use for fires. Don't do it! Different woods burn differently and also carry differently in smoke, and the Angeles National Forest is often at elevated fire danger levels
• the drive from the base of the mountain to this campground is about 45 minutes. make sure you have enough gas and have a map / driving directions ready, because there is no cell phone service

Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get to test products to review for some of my camping trips. On this trip, we tested out two meals from Mountain House. (See my review of other meal options in my Meander Lake campground review). After cooking these pre-made camping meals, I may never go back! On this trip we had the Noodle with Chicken for dinner and Granola with Milk and Blueberries for breakfast. They were seriously DELICIOUS. Better than anything I can cook with my backcountry kitchen set-up. Here's what I love about these meals:

• super great taste
• quick to make. These meals are ready in 10 minutes or less, some are ready as soon as you add water. After a long day of climbing or hiking, or when you're waking up in the morning, it's so nice to have food ready so quickly
• easy to make. Just add water (boiling, usually). This also means that all we need to pack is a Jetboil, which is so much more convenient than packing a stove, pots, cooking oil, ingredients, cutting boards, etc.
• lightweight, and you can choose among packaging options for more compactness

All in all, I'd say these meals are a game changer for short trips or backcountry camping , when you want to pack minimally. If you're doing a week of camping with easy access to your car, then these meals aren't necessarily your cheapest option for the whole week, but it's totally worth the money in terms of taste and convenience (so you can spend more time on other outdoor activities!).

There are only two things I'd like to see change to further improve Mountain House meals. First, there are no vegan options, and very few vegetarian options. Second, I find the serving amounts to be unhelpful in their current format, because the calories per serving are so low. For example, with the Noodle with Chicken, the pouch says "2.5 services", but there are only 220 calories per serving. If this were your sole meal item for dinner, I'd say that more like 1 serving, especially if you're consuming these meals after a day of rock climbing or hiking. So if I meal plan with Mountain House pouches, you have to calculate servings based on the calories, rendering the "servings" as advertised uninformative.

The first thing you should know about Tapo Canyon Park is that for actual tent camping, you will be in either decomposed granite or concrete. The second thing is that there is no cell service and no phone landlines there. 

The park is very nice, and very well maintained. There is a large grass area with an upgraded playground, ample covered picnic area for large groups, and an archery range (private, but open to the public on Saturdays).

The archery range is one of the best in California. There is a members area and the original range is open to the public on Saturdays from 9-1, with a nominal $5 fee.

The campsites are designed for RVs. I have camped here in a tent and there is no way to drive a stake into the ground. The sites are fairly large and well spread out for an RV lot. 

Each site has a fireplace, picnic table, and full hook ups. There is not much shade. The sites are very well maintained daily by the camp host Terri. 

At night you can hear the coyotes calling as they roam the rugged hills, but don't worry it's a very safe park.

I would give the park 4 stars for camping in an RV, 2 stars for tent camping, the facility as a whole is probably a 4.

What I love the best about this place is that it's local to me as I live in Los Angeles.

I was looking for a beautiful picnic spot and found it here....You should definitely come and enjoy this beautiful area. ...Even if you have a large group.

The campground is pretty standard and the surrounding environment isn't particularly special. I would recommend the late fall through early spring months, when the creek actually has water in it. It gets very dry in the summer months. While I wouldn't call this park the most beautiful of the many SoCal options, there are many interesting activities. The backbone trail goes through here, and is great for hiking. Awesome climbing options. There is some sightseeing of old movie sets, with some of the infrastructure left from Plant of the Apes movie set and the tv show MASH. The most recent movie filmed here was Anchorman (2004).

Was a great time.. Who does NOT like Malibu. We had an Environmental campsites they are located in relatively undisturbed natural settings. Each site has a table, a clearing for your tent, and a primitive toilet nearby. Environmental campsite fees and hike-in distances vary. It was peaceful and clean I love the warm days and cool evenings.

Campground is beautiful!! Spacious campsites with fire pits, and clean bathrooms (bring your own hand soap). Be aware of the limited hours for entering with a vehicle (8am-10pm). Would definitely camp here again!

Nice place to visit to get out of the city for a night or two. Didn't get to spend too much time here but I definitely want tonxome back and explore more of the hiking trails and climbing. Facilities were well maintained and everyone was very friendly.

I came here during the summer and it was extremely HOT. Typically during the summer season, I like to find campgrounds that have a lot of lush trees so we can be under the canopies and stay cool, but Malibu Creek State Park is so convenient to LA. There isn't much shade on the actual campgrounds, but a few sites do have partial shade. There are some decent hiking trails nearby if you can bear the heat, but all the creeks are dried up so you can't really take a dip. It's much nicer and greener during the Spring or Fall. 

The campsites are pretty standard, but they are spacious and have some privacy from neighboring sites. They come with a picnic table and there are coin-operated showers nearby. This isn't my favorite campground, but I love that it is local to me.

We loved out time at Malibu Creek State Park. There are beautiful trails and the sites are well maintained. The showers were cold but did warm up (there is an additional charge for the showers). We will definitely be back. 15 minutes from Pepperdine too.

This campground was a hidden gem. when we went in March, it was quiet and empty, and everything was green. Bathrooms and showers were clean and I watched the workers scrub them out - they were very thorough. Sites were reasonably sized, although parking was tight. The nearby hikes are quite pleasant. All in all, for being as close to LA as it is, it’s pretty awesome.

Plenty of hiking, swimming, and rock climbing to do. BUT very crowded and very noisy. Campground takes reservations but cant reserve sites. This can be great if you arrive right at check in, but not for those planning to arrive after work.

This is a great place to get away from the bustle of LA. Very quiet and peaceful. The bathrooms were very clean! All of the park rangers I encountered were very pleasant. The only thing I wasn’t too happy about was it closed the gates at 10. So we couldn’t come in any time we needed to. I’ve been to a few campgrounds that you can pay at the gate in a deposit box and the next morning you’d get checked in by a host. This would’ve been nice. Instead of having a 10pm curfew. We didn’t have much time to explore but what I saw was great. I’ll definitely be putting this on my list of places to return to.

We chose to stay here for the first time while visiting friends in Van Nuys for Memorial Day weekend. It's a quick drive from the campgrounds to almost anywhere. 🤨$45 for a one night spot is a little much, but great compared to a hotel/motel. 😥Gates close at 10pm 😥 so we had to leave friends early to get in the pitch the tent in the sunset. 🤩GREAT scenery of the Agoura Hills , roosters could be heard nearby the next morning ✌Other campers were cool and quiet, especially for a holiday. 🤗One of the rangers gave us a couple shower tokens that someone had "paid forward".

Showed up Tuesday with no reservations and stayed until Friday morning when the spot was reserved. Cold showers available for free, hot water costs a few tokens. The rock pool is awesome but gets crowded near mid day. Couldn't find the mash site, apparently the bridge washed out. Got by the 10pm gate closing by getting a ride from the campground and walking back from the gate at night. Great location to Malibu beaches and most of LA. $45 is the most we paid for camping anywhere... but worth it.

I have camped here many times over the years. It’s an absurdly expensive campground. It’s close to LA so I assume that is why they feel they can charge so much for a mediocre campground. The sites are close together and I camped here once when it was almost empty but they blocked off half the campground so you couldn’t get away from even just a few neighboring campers. There is a lot of cool stuff in the park like the old MASH set and a rock pool to swim in. But the campground itself is just OK.

Beautiful sunset! Comfortable, well-spaced sites. (Some have little/no shade.) Very dry in summer and a lot of small trash around (paper, wrappers). I can understand others taking issue with the $45 price, but parks are under such intense budget constraints, it’s hard to complain. We were in an airstream — challenge getting in/out for some sites if you are towing. Neighbors all friendly. Everyone quieted down right at 10. Covid camping so rock pool and MASH set were closed. It’s a great getaway if you’re a city dweller. Also: bunnies!!

This is a very beautiful area, tons of hiking and even some swimming areas that can be hiked to. Lost of filming has been done here, and there’s some cool landmarks to see. Always check before hand if the grounds are open, on occasion I have gone and they’ve had it closed. Also something to be aware of, they do not allow dogs, big bummer. Years ago, I saw dogs in the park, but the last time I went, they were not even allowed in. Otherwise it’s a very pretty place.

I know the area has been ravaged by fire in recent years but it is truly hot dry and just not very pleasant. Showers are clean, campground is noisy and no campfires even propane which is understandable but people were breaking that rule and cooking and it was very crowded. Sites are super close to each other and the rock pool and creek are closed! It’s close to LA but that’s about it

At $45/night this campground is the most I have paid thus far. I also believe it is worth it as well. It is prime location for some great hiking and at night it is super quiet. There are restrooms and showers as well. For hot showers you will need to purchase tokens at .50 cents each for 2 minutes of hot water. 8 minute hot shower will set you back $2 or take a cold shower for free. The gate to the park closes at 10pm. The campground is tucked away behind all the day use parking area so you won’t be bothered by that if you’re staying multiple days. Not much all spots have shade but the majority of spots do.

My husband, teenage son, grown son and his girlfriend, and I stayed here over Halloween. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained, the camp host super friendly and helpful, the bathrooms well positioned and clean, and the sites had shade and everything we needed. Between hiking and biking, we were busy for the time we were there. As a bonus, there is a Ralph’s just up the street, so you’ll never be far from anything you’d need. We hope to have a family reunion in the group camping spot when things open up. Perfect experience!

Beautifully landscaped, very well maintained campground with sites on a grassy lawn surrounded by gorgeous mountains.

Perfect for those who want to get a taste of camping with children without going too far from the city.

You get the comfort of on-site bathrooms with regular toilets and a shower, which in my experience is vital when traveling with young children as they often refuse to go to the pit toilet and solely for that reason do not want to stay overnight.

We had a camping birthday celebration for my 6 year old twins with other families with young kids who have never camped before and it was perfect. The middle lawn on both loops is so big that we had a volleyball net set up, and were also able to play many other group games. Children had a ton of room to run around wild without ever getting out of sight.

One of the fathers even drove out to surprise everyone and with fresh Starbucks in the morning 😄. It is very close to civilization yet feels like you are in the wild, so if your kiddo or you change your mind in the middle of the night about the entire “camping thing” - you can just pack up and be home in fifteen.
