Jenkinson Campground at Sly Park Recreation Area offers several glamping options in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Located about 15 miles from Grizzly Flats at an elevation of approximately 3,500 feet, the area provides cooler summer temperatures than the Sacramento Valley. Water spigots throughout the campground are turned off during winter months, and visitors should prepare for significant seasonal changes in glamping conditions.
What to do
Explore waterfall trails: A 1-mile trail from the Hazel Creek day use area leads to a 33-foot waterfall with a natural swimming hole. "There is a nice, short hike to a waterfall! It's just a 1 mile walk along the lakeshore from the Hazel Creek day use parking area," notes a reviewer from Sly Park Recreation Area.
Try gold panning: Visit historic gold rush sites in nearby Coloma Resort for a taste of California history. "If you ever want to experience the thrill of gold panning, and California history go here! You will not strike it rich, but with a couple hours of effort you can get a nice little bottle of gold flakes to take home with you," shares a camper.
Winter camping adventures: Several glamping areas remain open year-round with modified services. "We stayed the weekend at a great site. It was cold with a little rain but was very fun. Water level was low and this time of year the water spickets are off. This site is right next to one of the vault toilets and a trash dumpster. Not many people stay this time of year," explains a winter visitor to Sly Park.
What campers like
Privacy of specific sites: Certain spots offer seclusion even in popular campgrounds. "Great campsite! Lot 38 on Pinecone Strip, really private. No other campsite really visible. Close to bathrooms and water. Awesome hiking around the Lake Jenkinson," reports a visitor to Jenkinson Campground—Sly Park Recreation Area.
Less crowded weekdays: For a quieter glamping experience near Grizzly Flats, timing matters. "It does get very busy on weekends, so if you would rather not deal with the 'Weekend Warrior' type of campers, book your stay for mid-week (Mon-Thurs) and probably avoid camping in July altogether," advises a camp host from Sly Park Recreation Area.
Access to multiple water activities: Many glamping sites provide options beyond swimming. "Camping at Sly Park is a lot of fun! Fishing is good for trout and bass! Nice beaches to hang out at! Kayak and paddle board rentals make exploring the lake relaxing and fun!" explains an enthusiast about water recreation options.
What you should know
Bear awareness: Proper food storage is essential when glamping in Grizzly Flats and surrounding areas. "But be prepared. There may also be bears. Bears are everywhere here. There are bear boxes at each site, and kids everywhere you probably won't be a bears first target. Just be bear aware," warns a visitor to Fallen Leaf Campground.
Road conditions: Access to some glamping sites requires careful navigation. "The roads are very narrow with plenty of blind corners. Unsupervised children on bicycles, hikers, and other campers walking dogs on the roads is very common, unfortunately so are speeding cars. Be cautious on the roads and keep a close eye out," cautions a Sly Park camp host.
Reservation requirements: Plan well in advance, especially for summer stays. "Our group has been camping at Sly Park together and respectively since 1996, and we can't ever get enough. It's a very popular camping spot, so I recommend planning and reserving sometimes several months in advance."
Tips for camping with families
Seek out family-friendly sites: Some glamping areas specifically cater to families with children. "This is a great place to camp or to make a day trip if you're near the area. Campsites are well kept. Beautiful hikes that are easy for young children. Plenty of trails to choose from," notes a visitor to Sly Park Recreation Area.
Check for seasonal activities: Camp Nauvoo offers various family programs throughout the year. "The owners of this campground have made it there mission that you have a wonderful experience if you are a newbie or seasoned camper. Great sites for families and romantic sites for couples. Hiking, swimming, fishing and places for quiet time."
Consider campgrounds with recreation facilities: Some glamping locations provide extra amenities for children. "This resort is part of Colorado River Adventures and is private. Very nice park with everything you could need. I love the arcade and ice cream parlor and they sell ice. Everyone is kind and accommodating," explains a visitor to Ghost Mountain RV Campground.
Tips from RVers
Size restrictions apply: Many glamping areas near Grizzly Flats have limitations for larger vehicles. "Rainbow, Kam Loop, Dogwood and Hazel Creek camping loops are nicely shaded and stay much cooler than the camping loops toward the front of the park but it can be tough to get a larger motorhome or travel trailer into the back of the park," advises a camp host from Sly Park Recreation Area.
Check electrical connections: Verify power availability for your specific needs. "I had to bypass the surge suppressor because it kept cutting out due to low voltage. Voltage was generally 104-105. I would be very cautious about coming here with a larger RV. Ours is 30' bumper to bumper. I think 32 would be ok," warns a visitor to American River Resort.
Consider generator policies: Noise regulations affect the RV glamping experience. "Great campground. Nice location. Only complaint would be generators running most of the day from all the RV's. Other then that it's a great family friendly site," notes a Fallen Leaf Campground visitor.
