    Rancho Seco Recreation Area

    All types of fun !

I love this place because it is about 45 minutes from the house.  There's plenty to do with lots of great sites.  The first time we went, they didn't have any annual passes because they lady was out that day. But the other day, we were able to finally get a season pass.  You can fish, hike, or swim here. The campsites are spacious and you don't feel over crowded if there is a family next to you. It's pet friendly. The store was recently redone and they offer a wide variety of items, from keep sakes to any necessity you may have forgotten ( lighter, logs, clothes shoes, etc... )  There also boat rental that are a fair price, plus you get them for an hour or so. ( You will have to check the prices and availability. ) There's a dog park for the dogs to roam free off the leash, which also has access to water/ beach area for the dogs only.

    American River Resort

Family of 4 roof top tent camping

Nice campground - close to river. .5 mile walk to town for shopping/eating. All sites have fire pit and picnic table. Bathrooms clean and private showers. A little pricey for a tent site - 45.00 and 5.00 for the dog but it’s California.

    49er Village RV Resort

    Convenient to area wineries

General: This is a HUGE RV park (a Sun Resort) with back-in, pull-through sites, and cabins. We called a day ahead to see if there was room and on a weekday in early May, there was plenty of availability. We even received a Spring Flash Sale (40% off) rate which, although more than we usually spend to camp, was reasonable. As is typical of RV parks, there is a small patch of lawn between sites but virtually no privacy. There are trees throughout the park and although it is located right on the road, only the sites that back up to the road hear road noise. There is a small pond in the center and we saw some ducks. All camping sites have full hook-ups and a picnic table but no fire ring or grill. There is a large laundry room and a café. We were assigned a site at check-in.

Site Quality: Pads are paved and level. The back-in sites in the center back up to each other with no divider between them. I saw several large RVs look almost like they were touching!

Bathhouse: Two bathhouses each with three stalls, two sinks, and two showers. Although there is a curtain separating the showers from the rest of the bathroom, the bench is outside of the shower stalls, which could be awkward. However, in the time we were there, I never saw a single person in the bathroom(assuming most people use their own bathrooms in their RVs). The shower had good water pressure and hot water.

Activities: There is a pool, playground, rec center. Shuffleboard, horseshoes, and beach volleyball. It is a half-mile around the perimeter, so I was able to enjoy a short run.

This is not our usual type of camping experience, but since we met friends at a nearby winery, this worked for us since we did not want to drive far.

Ritchey Creek Campground — Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

Campground in the heart of wine country

Small, cozy campground located in the heart of wine country. Site contains fire pit, picnic tables, and bear locker. Several prominent wineries located near by as well as a charming town called Calistoga. Sites and bathrooms were well maintained. Good option if you're doing Napa on a budget!

    Coloma Resort

    Nice place next to river

This place is north east of Sacramento. Coloma resort is what some friends call "Glamping", but it's so much more than that. You can tent camp (it's covered sites for camping too), rent a cabin or RV camp. Great sites along the river too. One negative, is you have to book way ahead of time, but it's well worth it. You can pan for gold, relax, or bike, hike along the river, and kids can play along several playgrounds for kids of different ages. A large grass area great for games, and if you are up for it, rafting, kayaking and fishing in the cold American river. You can also learn some history about the discovery of gold and check out Sutter Mill!

    Rancho Seco Recreation Area

    A Gem

This is a wonderful spot to stay for a few days in the off season. We stayed in February. Summers would be very hot and I imagine the area would be packed with day use folks. 12 miles from I-5 out in the country. Very quiet.  21 water and electric sites with a dump station on the way out. Some pull through sites. About 50 tent only sites, some just feet from the lake. RV sites are farther from the lake on mostly level gravel pads with picnic table, fire rings, and a trash can at each site. The grounds are very attractive and very well maintained and all of the staff we encountered were friendly and accommodating. There is one marked hiking trail that follows the lake shore for the first mile then through a field with cattle.

    Skyline Wilderness Park

Skyline Wilderness Park - Wilderness just outside of wine country!

Checkin process a little hectic but wonderful camp hosts and overall nice facilities. A ton of great hiking and horseback riding trails. Literally 5 mins outside of the town of Napa. Ate at an amazing Brazilian Steakhouse and came to camp in just a short drive. Sites are free form and come as you are, basically you’re assigned to a section and you camp where there room to do so. Sites backs up to Wilderness and saw a doe within 10 mins of setting up camp just a few steps away. Level sites, water, picnic table and grill at each spot. All close to restrooms and showers, needs some updating but very clean. You’ll need to make sure you have a tent, no car-camping. All-in-all, felt like going to summer camp in the city but left with a smile on my face!! :) Would stay again for sure! Enjoy!

Guide to Davis

Cabin rentals near Davis, California range from basic to fully equipped accommodations within a 40-mile radius. Most locations operate year-round with higher demand during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F. Sacramento River Delta properties often feature waterfront access, while foothill locations provide shade from oak and pine trees.

What to do

Fishing access: Thousand Trails Lake Minden offers stocked fishing opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. "Last trip we caught 3 bass and 12 bluegills. This trip we caught a personal record size bass. Great place for fishing all day," notes one visitor who appreciates the waterfront sites.

Boating options: Ko-Ket Resort provides direct access to the California Delta waterways with rentable equipment. "Has a cute restaurant on the water too. Very clean facilities, it's right on the water- the California delta river. They have paddle boards you can rent and go out on the water in the morning," mentions a camper who enjoyed the waterfront activities.

Swimming facilities: Several properties near Davis offer water recreation during warmer months. At Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, "We had our grandkids and older kids and it was so fun. Rv campsite and water park was clean and very nice... we spent all day at the water park," reports one visitor who stayed in cabin accommodations.

What campers like

Riverfront views: California Delta's Snug Harbor offers cabins with water access and docking facilities. "Back in RV SITES back right up to the river, with their own dock. There are also cabins and two manufactured homes. A cute beach sits at the end of the island," explains a visitor who appreciated the location.

Family activities: Multi-generational experiences are available at several locations offering cabin accommodations. "We go with several families with kids 5-13 and they all have a blast. The price per night is very expensive but there are a lot of amenities... Our kids really enjoy the freedom to go play while the adults sit back and relax," says a Jellystone Park visitor.

Affordable wine country access: Skyline Wilderness Park provides cabin options near Napa without resort pricing. "Checkin process a little hectic but wonderful camp hosts and overall nice facilities. A ton of great hiking and horseback riding trails. Literally 5 mins outside of the town of Napa," shares one camper who enjoyed combining outdoor accommodations with wine country activities.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin rentals require advance booking, particularly during peak season. "Great place to camp. It has a big pond you can go fishing in and it's quiet. The only thing that I could say needed to be updated is keeping the trees groomed unfortunately we scratched our motorhome coming into the park," notes a Lake Minden visitor.

Seasonal considerations: Summer temperatures often exceed 100°F in the Davis region, making spring and fall ideal for outdoor activities. "Not a whole lot of people when I visited in March—pros and cons to having the campground to myself," explains a Brannan Island camper about off-season experiences.

Facility variations: Rancho Seco Recreation Area and other properties offer varying cabin amenities. "Sites are free form and come as you are, basically you're assigned to a section and you camp where there room to do so. Sites backs up to Wilderness and saw a doe within 10 mins of setting up camp just a few steps away," reports a visitor describing the naturalistic setting.

Tips for camping with families

Safety considerations: When booking cabins with children, check for potential hazards. At Rancho Seco, a visitor cautions, "We found multiple fish hooks and one happen to pierce my sandal. We have a 3 year old and brought our dog so imagine how dangerous that can be."

Entertainment options: SacWest RV Park & Campground provides family-friendly facilities near cabin accommodations. "Great campground! Hospitality and professionalism- that how you can describe this place! Lots of things to do for kids: great playgrounds, swimming pool, more than 100 ducks going around!" reports an enthusiastic visitor.

Booking timing: Family-oriented properties fill quickly during summer and holiday weekends. At Thousand Trails Lake Minden, "Crowded on holiday weekends and a lot of people playing loud music. If you are okay with that they have a lot of sites right next to the water. The sites away from the water are quieter."

Tips from RVers

Space considerations: Cabin accommodations at many properties have limited parking for additional vehicles. "RV campsites are close together and semi-level. Bathrooms could use some TLC. But the park is nice with lots of hiking, views and close to Napa," notes a visitor at Skyline Wilderness Park.

Shower facilities: When booking cabins without private bathrooms, check communal facility quality. "Clean showers and bathrooms, some trees, close to Raley's Grocery store. Easy drive to the wineries of Napa Valley, a little further to Sonoma but a nice drive," reports a Skyline Wilderness Park guest who appreciated the convenience.

Off-season values: Cabin rentals near Davis offer better rates during winter months. "This is a wonderful spot to stay for a few days in the off season. We stayed in February. Summers would be very hot and I imagine the area would be packed with day use folks," advises a Rancho Seco visitor.
