Sherwin Creek Mammoth

RV friendly campground, easily accessible. Very nice sites with dense forest. Lots of shade and hammock trees. Close to mammoth town with so much to do. Only problem was not reserving enough days there!

Lovely Spot Near Mammoth Lakes

On our way from Reno to Vegas we drove into a serious thunderstorm, so while we weren’t planning to stop, we were thrilled to find this campground when we did! Close off the Highway and very close (~2 miles) from grocery, gas etc. in town, yet feels secluded and is very quiet. Clean vault toilets. Picnic table, water spigot, fire ring, BBQ pit and bear box at each site. Despite the rain we were happy to find a covered, honor-system firewood stack ($7 in the bucket) so we could still have a fire. Great spot for getting up and heading to hike at the many awesome trails surrounding. Lots of people had their OHVs along too- must be good trails for that too! Gotta pay on rec.gov.. no cash ranger box.

Secluded and Quite

A secluded but just 15 mins ride from city campground. Camp host Don greeted us and was very helpful in explaining do and don't. I was at site 08 which is walk in site. It was very close to restroom but not too close for odour. The restrooms are clean but no flush. Site 8 is so close to the creek that you hear calming sound of water flowing whole night.

Couldn't stay due to wildfires

The day I arrived the governor had closed the state parks statewide due to the wildfires. Reserved the whole week with recreation.gov and was promptly refunded those funds. No complaints the assistant host was awesomely suoee helpful.

Love this spot

My siblings both have trailers so this is where they stay when we come to mammoth. It’s very dispersed and clean! We love spending the day here and hiking around. So beautiful. We love climbing in the Ravine.

Great campsite in a safe town

The site was in a great spot in the middle of a nice, busy town filled with people you can tell live outdoors. Campsite was easy enough to get to. We weren’t at a drive-in spot, but the walk-in wasn’t too bad. Plenty of wildlife visit the campgrounds, so definitely be sure to use the bear boxes.

While it’s a mostly safe place to camp, the campgrounds are pretty much open and don’t necessarily have a gate to go through, so it’d be best to keep your valuables locked up and hidden or better yet, leave them home or on your person. We’ve seen one sketch person obviously on drugs walking the campgrounds one day.

The campgrounds are a short drive/bike ride from the hustle and bustle of the tiny town & an even shorter distance from Sherwin Lake trailhead (absolutely recommended).

The trail is great for off-leashing your dogs assuming they’re good with other dogs/people. The trail itself can get a bit of traffic, but it’s not terrible. The 2 mile hike up is worth it once you see the lake, the fish, & the meadow just across it!

Definitely worth the trip from San Jose!

Excluded and spacious

We walked in and was able to find a campground during a holiday weekend. The camp host was friendly would come by and notify us if there were any bear sightings nearby.

We have stayed at this campground before and didn't have a bathroom issue. This time the pit toilets had a serious bug, flies, and spider issue. When entering the entire wall was filled with flies. There were also flies inside the toilet which made going to the bathroom quite unpleasant as they fly up into your bottom.

Hidden Gem!

This is a great campground away from main roads and amongst the trees of mammoth. This campground is for tents, trailers and rv’s. There are no hookups here, but spots have fire pits and tables. This is also an OHV campground, so you’ll see an occasional dirt bike or side by side cruising through. There are bears here too!!

Great central spot

Stayed on lot 51. Sunny until around 4, then quite shaded. Large lot with space for the dog to roam around on. Only one side has a neighbor, so it’s quite quiet.

Amenities: Vault toilet, water spigots, bear box, fire pit, grill, and camp hosts are friendly and helpful.

AMAZING. More isolated than nearby sites in Mammoth. Quick drive to Twin Lakes and to Convict Lake. Definitely worth the trip. Lots of great hiking options available.

Campground that’s near town, but you can’t tell that it is!

This campground is just outside the main part of Mammoth Lakes, CA. You have to go on a paved then gravel road to get there. It is secluded, and you would never know that you are 5 mins. away from a Vons or all the hubbub of the town. There is a cute Creek, Sherwin Creek, that runs past the whole camp. You can here is all night, which my husband and I liked. The sites are clean and spacious. There are walk-in tent sites and RV sites. There are bear boxes at every site, and must be used!

We had a big thunderstorm come through, and it wasn’t that bad because the campground is protected by hills along side it.

We absolutely loved it at Sherwin Creek, and are looking to go back next summer!

S'mores and meteors

Every August my family and friends meet at Sherwin Creek Campground around the time of the Perseids meteor shower. I like this campground because it's a little ways away from the crowds of the lakes campgrounds and the sites are not packed together like a parking lot. It's also a little remote yet convenient to town. There's a nice little creek that runs along the edge. Downside is vault toilets and no showers. It's also become popular with the 4-wheeler crowd which can make it noisy at times.
