The steep, winding final two miles up from Ortega Highway signal arrival at Blue Jay Campground, where 50 first-come, first-served sites occupy forested terrain above Lake Elsinore. This Cleveland National Forest campground operates year-round at 4,200 feet elevation, though summer temperatures can climb uncomfortably high during midday hours.
Sites cluster along paved loops with fire pits, picnic tables, and designated tent areas, though space runs tight between neighbors. Chad M. notes "the first site we saw" at site 3 worked well for his extended family gathering. Several sites offer overlooks of the surrounding mountains, while others tuck into more private spots off the main loops. Weekend availability drops significantly, with only a handful of sites remaining by late Saturday morning.
The San Juan Trail provides direct access to nearby waterfalls, though seasonal fly populations can make hiking unpleasant during summer months. Fletcher G. describes conditions where "hundreds of flies" forced an early departure in late June. Spring and fall visits typically encounter fewer insects. Running water, flush toilets, and dumpsters serve all sites, with fire restrictions enforced strictly by staff.
Access requires navigating narrow mountain roads that can challenge larger RVs, with a 20-foot length limit in effect. The campground sits roughly 7.5 miles from campgrounds near Trabuco Canyon and connects to other forest recreation via El Cariso Campground 2.5 miles northeast. Cell service reaches most areas, though the remote location provides genuine separation from urban Orange County just an hour below.
Check current fire restrictions and bring citronella candles for evening comfort during warmer months.
