Not a camp spot (private propery)

This was not at all a campsite. Most of the forest is private property with house everywhere. This location in particular is no different. Go to Sam's throne to camp

Frequently Asked Questions

What river camping options are available in Ozark National Forest?

Ozark National Forest offers river camping along several waterways including the Buffalo National River, Mulberry River, and Big Piney Creek. These areas typically provide primitive camping with few amenities. For more reliable river camping experiences, look for designated sites rather than general dispersed areas. Many paddlers enjoy multi-day float trips with overnight camping. Remember to practice proper waste disposal and camp above potential flood levels. Check with the Forest Service for seasonal water levels before planning river camping trips.

What are the regulations for dispersed camping in Ozark National Forest?

Dispersed camping in Ozark National Forest follows standard Forest Service regulations: camp at least 150 feet from water sources, roads, and trails; practice Leave No Trace principles; and limit stays to 14 consecutive days within a 30-day period. No permits are required for most dispersed camping, but campfires may be restricted depending on conditions. Be aware that much of the forest contains private property inholdings where camping is prohibited. Always verify land ownership before setting up camp.

Where can I find a map of dispersed camping sites in Ozark National Forest?

Maps of dispersed camping sites in Ozark National Forest can be obtained from any of the ranger district offices throughout the forest or at the main forest headquarters. The USFS website for Ozark National Forest also provides downloadable maps. For specific dispersed camping opportunities, consider visiting Sam's Throne area which offers more reliable camping options. Always check with forest rangers before your trip as some areas marked for dispersed camping may include private property.

How does camping differ between Ozark and St. Francis National Forests?

Ozark National Forest is significantly larger than St. Francis, with more developed campgrounds and recreation areas. Ozark features mountainous terrain with extensive hiking trails, while St. Francis offers flatter, more accessible camping in many areas. Ozark contains numerous private property inholdings that can complicate dispersed camping. St. Francis generally has fewer visitors and offers a more secluded experience. Both forests require the same regulations for dispersed camping, but Ozark has more designated camping areas like Sam's Throne that provide reliable options for backcountry camping experiences.
