Best Cabin Camping near Nogales, AZ

Cabins near Nogales provide rustic to modern accommodations across several state parks and forest service properties. Patagonia Lake State Park Campground offers cabin rentals with water and electric hookups, while Kentucky Camp Cabin provides a more secluded forest setting. Most cabins include basic furnishings with picnic tables and fire rings outside. "The cabins are right next to the fire pits when relaxing but all the other sites look perfect," notes one visitor about Kartchner Caverns State Park, which maintains immaculate facilities with heated bathrooms and showers.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Kent Springs Cabin in the Coronado National Forest provides a more primitive experience with drinking water and electricity but no water hookups or showers. Kartchner Caverns State Park offers more developed cabin accommodations with nearby hiking trails and cave tours. Reservations are essential, particularly during winter months when snowbirds visit the region. The Canelo Ranger Residence in Coronado National Forest prohibits pets and fires, while other locations like Rancho del Nido allow both.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Cooking facilities vary significantly between properties - some offer only outdoor fire rings while others provide electric hookups. Ramsey Canyon Cabins includes trash service and toilets but limited cooking amenities. Small camp stores operate at some locations, including Patagonia Lake State Park, which has a marina store for basic supplies. Kartchner Caverns features a visitor center with additional amenities. During summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, cabins with electricity for cooling become particularly valuable.

    Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground

The most comfortable campground so far

Can't give this one high enough stars.

We're van camping and working remotely, so our priorities are internet connectivity, electricity, and running water.

The sites are all nice and flat, very well maintained, and pretty well spaced out. For the desert, there's surprisingly good vegetation between sites for privacy (but it is the desert).

The bathrooms are plentiful, immaculate, and have hot water, showers, heated hand dryers, and a dish washing station... All open, even in the winter!

Decent cell coverage on both verizon and t mobile, plus good free WiFi. Our site, in particular, had some issues with the different providers, depending on the direction of the wind, but I was able to work all day.

Our only itty bitty gripe is that the fire rings did not have grills. But really, that's nothing.

    Would gladly stay again!

Oh, and there's some pretty nice trails and caves, too. Make sure you reserve your tour well in advance

    Cleanest campsites ever!

1-17-2021 site 33. Talk about clean! This is by far the cleanest campsite I have stayed at. The camp host are really nice and really do care about the camps. Nice and quiet at night. Electric and water at the sites. And some cool Arizona fire rings. We weren’t able to go into the caves because of our small child but there is a hiking trail which was nice. Great weekend getaway. Site 33 is right next to the cabins so are kinda close to there fire pits when relaxing but all the other sites look perfect.

Amazing State Park and wonderful Endowment to Preserving Nature's Splendor

Tent camping, Cabins, RV Camping, ton's of hiking from various levels of difficulty. Kartchner Cavern's is the main attraction here. Call ahead for availability and tickets. But don't miss all the other amazing hiking trails and nature center. Also check out the other astronomy programs they have from time to time. Tuscon is a "Dark Skies" community that offers amazing views of the night sky.

    Great State Park!

We stayed at this State park on 12/27/2020.  We were not able to visit the caverns as all tickets had been sold when we arrived in the morning!  Plan ahead and purchase tickets in advance online.  The RV park was fantastic.  Our site was W/E with a dump on exit.  The site was level with a asphalt pad, some shade, a fire ring and picnic table was provided.  The bathrooms and showers were super clean as well.  There are hikes on the property that were well maintained as well.

    Nice hike

This is an open desert State Park campground with a fancy, cavernous registration center you have to park and walk a few hundred yards to enter. The gift shop was closed.

The campsites are close together affording little privacy. Each has water and electric hookup, a picnic table and fire ring. The back in sites are paved and level. The bathrooms with showers were clean and well appointed.

The Camp Host greeted me once I was settled. He Wanted me to be aware of the rules and regulations of the campground. Before he left, he asked me if I was traveling alone. The campground host circled the campground in his golf cart several times each day peering into each site on his way by. The only other campground I experienced his behavior was in Lost DutchmanState Park up near Apache Junction.

I hiked the Foothills Loop which was challenging in spots especially around the apex. Walking sticks are recommended. The views were awesome.

I’d give this four stars, but I don’t like feeling surveilled

    Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground

    Outstanding!!

Super clean, sites are spacious and all with outstanding views. Very impressed with this park. The park does not allow you to come early to check in and that’s because they clean the sites, rack the gravel and make sure everything is pristine for your stay. Everything was outstanding. The showers were clean, the water was good and electric was stable. Each site had a fire pit and picnic table.

As others have said, it’s a dart sky park so the stars are popping out of the sky.

There are bumper outs hikes to enjoy the scenery. All levels of exertion. I highly recommend this gem of a park.

Patagonia Lake State Park Boat-In Campsites

Perfect Little Oasis in the Southwest

Even when it's busy, it's not overwhelmingly so. Visit the beach, walk the bridge, rent a boat, or fish the lake during your camping trip. I love this place. Different ambiance than most AZ lakes. Plenty of RV parking or for tent campers preferring privacy, make sure to book a boat-in site. If you book early enough, you can snag site 38! It's technically a boat-in site but you can park in the parking lot and walk a short distance down the stairs to your own private little area. Of course, you'll have passersby looking for a great fishing spot or just walking the lake but otherwise this is your best bet for privacy without actually having a boat. Bathrooms and showers have always been clean during my trips. Convenient store always had necessities and ice cream cones to top it off. There is cell phone service but check your roaming! At times service providers will detect your in Mexico! I love this place.

    Lovely, spacious and great facilities

Each site is really big and everything is clean and well maintained. Nearly all sites have electrical and water with a dump station located near the entrance. Each site has a table and fire pit as well as shade from trees. The park hosts the caverns and cave tours and a museum about the area. We are headed on a cave tour today! Nice trails surround the park and clearly marked for either hiking, bike or equestrian.

    Patagonia Lake State Park Campground

    Least favorite state park

This has been our least favorite campsite in the Arizona State Park system so far in our travels. We shortened our trip and headed home early because it just wasn’t for us. I’ve listed pros and cons below, but to give you an idea of our camping style, we are a family with young children and a dog. We head out in our 24ft trailer at least once a month for a long weekend totally immersed in nature.

Pros: -Close to Tucson -beautiful drive (topography and scenery) -although we didn’t partake due to covid there is a nature center & gift shop, market, boat rentals, and a ranger stations -primitive cabins with a great view -water and electric and on site dump station -bird viewing seemed awesome if that’s your thing. We aren’t birders, but thoroughly enjoyed the variety of birds in this area. -Junior Ranger program with fun prizes... posters and wooden badges. Although the rangers didn’t seem interested in engaging with the kids and just tossed them the prizes.

Cons: -the campground was not clean at all. Dog poop was everywhere and litter was strewn all over the campground. Our site alone was full of bits of broken plastic, paper, dog poop, and cigarette buds. It was disheartening that neither the rangers nor the campers take pride in this campground. We did our best to leave our site much cleaner than we found it. -while the sites are more spacious than an RV park, they are not as spacious as nearby karchner or roper lake. There is not any privacy. -many sites are not level. Our parking spot was level but nothing else. Leaving us without a great spot to put our chairs and table. -the traffic is non stop. Even up until midnight we had trucks driving through the campground. (This may have been campers or Border Patrol as we saw them driving through every couple of hours) -there is a lot of day use foot traffic through the campground. Between that and full campsites, we didn’t particularly feel safe outside of our campsite in terms of covid. Very few were wearing masks in congested areas.

With that being said, we will not be returning to this campground.

Guide to Nogales

Cabins near Nogales, Arizona typically offer rustic accommodations in the oak-studded foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains at elevations between 4,000-5,000 feet. Summer temperatures in this region regularly reach 100°F during daytime hours, making cabins with electricity particularly valuable for visitors. Winter nights can drop below freezing, with occasional light snow at higher elevations in the Coronado National Forest properties.

What to do

Birding expeditions: Patagonia Lake State Park Campground is renowned for exceptional bird watching opportunities, particularly in spring. "Birder's paradise in April," notes Liz W., who enjoyed canoeing on the lake and exploring the surrounding area.

Cave tours: Reserve guided tours at Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground well in advance, especially during winter months. "We reserved and did the Rotunda/Throne Tour. It was very cool and our 1st cave tour. I would suggest reading the rules for tours before reserving. Access to the cavern is very controlled as far as how you get in and what you can take," advises Bill R.

Horseback riding: Several cabin properties allow equestrian activities. At Rancho del Nido, visitors can bring their own horses or arrange rides. "This is horse ranch with great host and amazing views. They offer horse back riding which our kids loved," shares Geraldine B.

What campers like

Stargazing opportunities: The minimal light pollution at several cabin properties creates exceptional night sky viewing. "Come for the stars, if nothing else," recommends Maryrose L. about Rancho del Nido, noting "It is so quiet and beautiful."

Wildlife observation: Ramsey Canyon Cabins offers exceptional wildlife viewing directly from the property. "Their bird feeders and birding area has way more birds than just the Ramsey Cyn preserve. We saw lots of birds and very close. Also saw lots of turkey and Coos deer," reports Mona S.

Central location: Many cabins provide access to multiple attractions. "The location of the park allows quick access to the I-10 and the town of Benson, about 12 miles away. Other interesting sights are within an hour or so of the park," explains Bill R. about Kartchner Caverns State Park.

What you should know

Varying water access: Water systems differ significantly between cabin properties. At Kent Springs Cabin, drinking water is available but there are no water hookups for bathing or washing facilities.

Accessibility challenges: Several cabin properties have steep terrain. Caballo Loco Ranch features challenging topography, as Greg L. describes: "The RV area is rolling ridges and steep sections, this is not a flat RV park. The access road from paved hwy was 7.9 miles of washboard sandy dusty dirt so be warned."

Reservation requirements: All cabin properties require advance booking, with winter months (November-March) filling earliest. "Make sure to book ahead," advises one visitor about Patagonia Lake, where winter reservations often fill 3-6 months in advance.

Tips for camping with families

Pack food supplies: Most cabin locations have limited or no food purchasing options. "There's a store there with basics," notes Seth P. about Patagonia Lake State Park Campground, but selection is minimal.

Bring entertainment: Unlike developed campgrounds, many forest cabins lack organized activities. "We biked all over the camp (small), Visited local town Sierra vista for a wonderful dog groomer (Paw Passion) and lunch (machaca @ La Casita)," shares Liz W. about activities they created during their stay.

Check fire regulations: Fire rules vary significantly between properties. For instance, at Canelo Ranger Residence, fires are prohibited entirely, while other locations permit contained fires in designated rings.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookups: Most cabin areas have restricted RV access or limited utility connections. "We had a reasonable back-in site with electricity and water. Only stayed one night but would definitely consider returning," explains Seth P. about his experience at Patagonia Lake.

Site leveling challenges: Many Nogales-area cabin campgrounds have uneven terrain. At Patagonia Lake State Park Boat-In Campsites, Kelly K. explains: "When we arrived I wish the park rangers would have been more informative on where to park, boat ramps, FIREWOOD, things to help out people who have never been."

Clean facilities: Well-maintained restrooms are available at several properties. "Clean restrooms, nice showers, friendly camp hosts," reports Harold P. about the facilities at Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground.
