Equestrian campsites near McNary, Arizona provide access to the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest trail system and high-elevation wilderness. Most horse-friendly campgrounds sit above 7,500 feet elevation, offering cooler summer temperatures but potential for snow into late spring. Several small campgrounds cater specifically to horseback riders with designated stalls or corrals.
What to do
Trail riding access: The small campground at KP Cienega connects to trails through meadows where wildlife viewing is excellent. "Located right next to a large meadow, we almost always see elk or deer. There is also a nice trail next to a creek but the path was over grown when we tried to hike down it," notes Beth G.
Creek exploration: Gabaldon offers immediate access to water features. "Right next to a nice little trail that crosses the creek. Quiet and peaceful," reports Calvin G., who enjoyed the campground even without horses.
Wildlife observation: The meadows surrounding KP Cienega Campground create prime viewing opportunities. Maria F. shares: "We enjoyed the beautiful meadow, with its wildflowers and wildlife." Visitors commonly spot deer and elk in early morning or evening hours.
What campers like
Peace and seclusion: Desert Falcon Ranch provides quiet, contemplative camping. "A peaceful place to think your thoughts, go on walks, listen to wildlife, look at wildflowers and read a book. Very serene. Magnificent sunsets and stars are bright at night," writes Judy L.
Natural setting: The forest location offers respite from summer heat. "This campsite is a repeat location for family. I almost didn't even want to post a review so I could keep it hidden," shares Beth G. about KP Cienega Campground.

What you should know
Weather variability: Mountain elevations mean unpredictable conditions year-round. "Lovely little campground at the bottom of the road with plenty of fields nearby. We saw deer bounding across the field, and felt it to be perfectly situated amongst the trees. Vault toilet nearby, we enjoyed a campfire and went to bed. Woke up the next morning to SNOW!" reports Laura P. about her May stay at KP Cienega.
Limited amenities: Most campgrounds offer basic facilities only. "The pit toilets were maintained. No trash cans, so take out what you bring in," advises Maria F.
Space limitations: Many sites accommodate only small camping setups. "Great little campground! Only 5 sites, just one that you can get a small rv onto. Over looking a beautiful meadow. Couple miles in off 191, dirt road was in great shape. Very secluded and quiet," reports Optimus about KP Cienega.
Tips for camping with families
Space for gatherings: White Crossing Camping along the Black River offers unmarked sites with room for larger groups. "This is great camping area with multiple unmarked sites available, first come basis. Our family had 14 people camping out of 5 vehicle at our site alone," shares Jason T.
Permit requirements: Some areas require recreation permits. "You do need a San Carlos Apache use permit which cost $20 per day per person over 12," notes Jason T. about White Crossing.
Wildlife awareness: Encounters with wildlife are common. "We saw a bear 50 feet across the river on out first day," reports Jason T. Teach children proper wilderness etiquette and food storage procedures.
