Fire Rd 688 - Dispersed

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Tall ponderosa pines line Fire Road 688 as it runs south of the Grand Canyon, giving campers a forested base roughly 10 to 20 minutes from the South Rim. Sites spread across open terrain for considerable distances, and the layout means groups rarely feel crowded even on busy weekends. The road itself is well-maintained near the entrance, though conditions narrow and roughen further in, with ruts and rocks that can challenge low-clearance vehicles. Large rigs do best near the beginning of the road, where sites are more level and maneuverable.

Camper accounts describe arriving on a Saturday afternoon and passing more than 10 open spots before settling on one. Brad B. notes that "even the trees are spaced enough to provide enough sun for solar panels," which matters for those dry camping here without hookups. Some sites come with existing fire pits, and at least one reviewer found firewood already stacked at their spot. Fires are permitted, and the campground is free, with a 14-day consecutive stay limit.

Cell coverage is inconsistent. T-Mobile gets a spotty signal, and AT&T fares similarly. Starlink works when there's a clear line through the canopy. A general store is within reasonable driving distance for resupply runs. Campers interested in dispersed choices around Kaibab National Forest will find several comparable options along nearby forest roads, including Forest Service Road 686 - Dispersed and Forest service Road 688 Dispersed Camping within a mile.

One practical note: sites fill by early evening during peak season, with at least one camper finding the area claimed by 7pm on a Thursday. Muddy conditions after rain can make it harder to exit some spots. Arriving before midday on weekends and keeping an eye on the road surface after precipitation will make the stay considerably smoother.

Campers regularly cited abundant level sites with excellent privacy in a dispersed setting just 10-11 miles from Grand Canyon's south entrance. Guests frequently mentioned good access for big rigs, though some areas can be muddy or rocky.

Quiet and shaded near the Canyon

I stayed maybe 10 minutes down once you turn off. Lots of spots and fairly spread out. Plenty of places for trailers or RVs but many smaller spots that are perfect for a tent. Larger sites at beginner would be best for large rigs rhough- further down the road it gets it gets more narrow with some good ruts. Tall pines all around, and while no brush for privacy sites are very spread out. I did get swarmed by some sort of tiny brown beetle at sunset, but besides that it was a good little spot for being 20 minutes from the rim of the canyon. Spotty TMobile service.

Great location

The main road is well maintained. Sites are spread out, and many choices are available. The sites seem very level. We didn't need leveling blocks at our spot. Even the trees are spaced enough to provide enough sun for solar panels. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and drove past 10 open sites before we found one perfect for our needs.

Beautiful Forest Service Area

Now, flat camping areas that go for miles! Check entrances and roads for extreme dips. Main road great. Close to the south rim for day trips. 14 day limit. AT&T cell not good but Starlink works as long as you can get it between all the amazing trees! Will definitely be back.

Quiet wooded camp site

Easy to navigate even towing a vehicle behind our RV. Quiet, wooded site away from road noise. Our site had a fire pit and wood provided when we pulled in. Approx 11 miles from the town Grand canyon village/ South rim of the grand canyon. 14 days consecutive stay limit. Dry camping. Leave no trace.

Great Spot

Stayed here for two nights found a nice spot a little ways back very accessible in our Honda Accord and still nice and tucked away. There were a few other people there but everyone was spread out enough where there was plenty of privacy. General store not too far away so you can stock up on supplies and a good location for going into the Grand Canyon during the day.

Good spot

Clean, hidden sites away from others to camp. Be careful of driving far in as there are many rocks and holes. Filled up fast by the time we got there at 7pm on a Thursday. Good free place to tent camp!
