Chiricahua Mountains

Wildlife watchers and hikers will find plenty to explore at this Forest Service campground, where bear-proof trash cans and maintained restrooms support extended stays. Located within Coronado National Forest near Portal, the campground accommodates both tent campers and RVs with electric hookups available at select sites.

The campground features two distinct camping areas with different privacy levels. Sites on the perimeter offer more space and natural screening, while interior sites sit closer together but still maintain basic separation through existing vegetation. Dense tree coverage provides shade during warmer months, though stargazers may need to walk to the nearby road for clearer night sky views. One camper notes the campground works best for "tents or small trailers," with 24-foot RVs representing about the maximum manageable size.

Turkey Creek Road leads to Sycamore Campground, where visitors can camp alongside a mountain stream. The sound of flowing water creates a natural backdrop for overnight stays. Multiple hiking trails branch out from the area, offering wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the surrounding forest. Winter brings snow to the higher elevations, transforming the landscape but limiting some backcountry access.

"Just remember to leave it cleaner than you left it," advises Tanner H.. The campground provides drinking water and maintains clean restroom facilities, making it suitable for campers who prefer established amenities over primitive camping.

Great park, great camping!

Sites were a little close together, but flush toilets and beautiful night skies! Beautiful, easy trail right off the campsite when you are ready for something a bit less demanding. Bear boxes at every site. I'll be back!

Beautiful for Hiking and backpacking

As long as you go when it's not snowing! There's hundreds of beautiful, well maintained and overgrown trails throughout the mountain range. Tons of wildlife and big trees. It's a forest wonderland compared to the surrounding Arizona desert.

Beautiful River flowing past Sycamore campground

If you take Turkey Creek Rd to Sycamore campground, you'll sleep with the beautiful sound of a mountain stream behind you. They have restrooms that are sanitized and many bear proof trash cans that are emptied regularly. There's a good chance to see wildlife if you hike one of the various trails around the area. Highly recommend this sight! Just remember to leave it cleaner than you left it! Snows during winter often. Not as good for hiking and backpacking but makes for a fun snow day!

Great campground

Some of the campgrounds located in the middle island have less privacy but there are still some trees and shrubs to separate them. Sites on the outside are large and very private. There are a ton of trees in the campground which I'm sure are great for shade in the warmer months. We would have loved to see more of the stars but the trees obviously block the views so I would recommend walking out to the road to stargaze at night. The bathrooms, while dated, were clean and functional. We were apprehensive about needing to make a fire in the BBQ grill but it was actually quite nice and kept our hands warm while playing cards. Everything in the National Monuments is very accessible from the campground.

A must for hikers

Small campground best suited for tents or small trailers. Ours is 24 and we just fit. Toilets and great tasting water are the amenities. The hiking and views were amazing as you walked thru the hoodos.

Chiricahua Mountains

Chiricahua Mountains. The eastern route to Chiricahua National Monument is dicey in areas. Check with rangers before traversing this route.
