Apache National Forest encompasses Strayhorse Campground, a US Forest Service site operating April through November near Clifton. The campground sits close to the road but sees minimal traffic, with only a handful of vehicles passing daily according to recent visitors. Six campsites spread across both sides of the road feature picnic tables and fire rings, while a large parking area accommodates horse trailers with an adjacent paddock.
The area shows signs of recent wildfire activity, though the burn damage remains less severe than other sections along US Highway 191. South-facing sites help with snow drainage during shoulder seasons. Vault toilets serve both sides of the road, and a wooden shelter provides additional covered space. RV length restrictions limit vehicles to 16 feet maximum. Campers seeking additional forest camping can explore KP Cienega Campground located nearby.
Description
The campground is set among large ponderosa pine and Gambel oak. Just six miles below the Mogollon Rim, it provides a cool shady site for picnics or camping.
