    Cooper Creek North Campground

    Lovely convenient campground

It's salmon fishing season and you can tell people are staying here to fish the Kenai River, which is great. It was a very convenient campsite off the highway on the way to Homer, in the national forest. only $23 a night to camp or $11.50 if your a senior or have an access pass. Great prize for Alaska, but of course no amenities at site such as water, electric etc. It's a dry spot.

Good size sites and level spots with picnic table and fire pit. Enjoyed our night here ...

    Tenderfoot Creek

    Perfect BaseCAMP

We spent 4 nights in Tenderfoot Campground just on the other side of Summit Lake. It is hidden but located at the base of a tall mountain that would be in avalanche danger if snow were in season. This camp is closed in winter. Our site was a first come, first serve site but it was the perfect pull-through for our campervan! It was a site walk to the bathroom, water pump was located across the street, and you had plenty of space for spreading out. You can hear the creek close by as it was flowing rapidly from snow melt high up on the mountain. It was perfectly located on a hill, equidistant from Soldotna, Seward, and Anchorage, and the mosquitoes left us alone as opposed to the ones on the loop as you come in closer to the lake. My favorite site in the Kenai Peninsula ! Not much cell service out here in these woods.

Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge & RV Park

    Met Our Needs

We followed our RV GPS and turned off AK-1 at Bean Creek Rd, which brought us to the Kenai Princess RV Park. A steep left turn led to the office, where we had a super friendly check-in. There was an RV in our site when we arrived, but the office quickly moved them to the overflow. The sites were split on two sides of a wide road with a large turnaround area, so backing into Site 35 with FHUs (30 AMP) was easy. The site was long enough for our 40’ toy hauler, including dropping the patio, and we could still park our F450 crosswise. Sewer connections were at the back center of the pad, with water and electric at the center—no issues. Water pressure was about 40 PSI. Because of perimeter trees and fishermen’s vehicles, we set Starlink on the roof for a clear sky shot. Verizon gave us 2 bars, while T-Mobile had no service. There were paths around the campground to the lodge and down to the lake, which we enjoyed walking with our pups. There weren’t many grocery options in Cooper Landing. The nearest major amenities were about an hour away in Soldotna. Overall, this was a decent campground that met our needs.

    Russian River - TEMPORARILY CLOSED

    Russian river camp ground alaska

Amazing weekend. Tucked back in the chugach national forest is a quiet campground that is hard to get into without prior planning. No Rv hookups but does have a dump station and potable wAter. Campsites are nicely spaced so your not camping on top of each other. Amazing fishing for trout and salmon. Lots of hiking trails and tons of tourist activities near by.

    Golden Nugget RV Park

    A City Campground

Wide gravel and grass site with wooden picnic table, no firepit. Several RV tour companies use this park. There are more than 200 sites in this park. Showers were clean and free. Nice laundry room. About 1/4 of park is occupied by long-term residents - clean and well maintained. Park is located within a couple miles of downtown, across street from Costco, and adjacent to a large run down mobile home neighborhood. Wi-fi is offered, but we were too far away from the office so couldn't connect.

    Golden Nugget RV Park

A place for RVs in Anchorage but don't expect much

We had the impression that many people stay long-term - hence a lot is laying around on the sites. Everything feels a little grubby, however the site provides W/E as well as a dumping station. Fine for one night when you have to hand your RV back the next day. If you are looking for a nice stay close to Anchorage, go to Palmer.

Bird Creek Campground — Chugach State Park

    First come, first serve

This campground has 22 sites and 2 public use cabins. There’s bathrooms but no showers. Each campsite has a fire ring and picnic table and there are trails within walking distance of your campsite.

We stayed during the off season so we ended up in the camp host site accidentally since it was one of the few that wasn’t still covered in snow. You definitely get some noise from Highway traffic but it’s not terrible. There’s a gas station right across the street for fuel and maybe some other last minute supplies you may need?

    Chugach National Forest Ptarmigan Campground

    @ the Y go LEFT

Many of these campgrounds stay open until it snows. If the gate is open the campground is open per the Forest service website. In the off season there is no services and no fees. If that is the case you must pack out all your trash. You can reserve campsites here.

There is a board walk for salmon viewing during the later part of the season (August-October). When the weather is good it can be hard to find a spot. If the weather is overcast, you have a chance of finding something here. Reservations are always recommended in the peak of camping season. Sites 10 and 13 are pull throughs for the bigger rigs. Cell Service: no Internet: no 2020 Cost: $14 Distance from Anchorage: 98 miles Best sites: 10, 13 pull throughs Bug Factor (1 minimal to 10 too many to enjoy): 4-7 depending on weather

Guide to Whittier

Whittier, Alaska sits in a unique location with limited road access, requiring travelers to pass through the 2.5-mile Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. The area receives about 197 inches of annual rainfall, creating lush surroundings but challenging camping conditions. RV campgrounds near Whittier provide strategic bases for exploring Prince William Sound and the surrounding Chugach National Forest.

What to do

Glacier viewing: Access Byron Glacier via a one-mile trail from a trailhead near Williwaw Campground. "We also did a family ride to the Byron Glacier trailhead and hiked 1 mile to see the glacier up close and personal," shares Dylan H.

Salmon watching: Visit the Williwaw Salmon Viewing Area during late summer when salmon run upstream. "The first loop on the right featured walking access to the Williwaw Salmon Viewing Area (salmon are running later in the summer)," notes Audry P.

Wildlife encounters: Visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center just 10 minutes from Portage Valley. "If you have kids and even if you don't then the Wildlife Conservation Center of Alaska is great way to get close to the biggest animals Alaska has to offer," recommends Tanya B.

Tunnel experience: Take the tunnel to Whittier for day trips and coastal access. "Take the tunnel to Whittier for a cool experience and quick snack!" suggests Angie G.

What campers like

Paved camping loops: The accessibility at Coeur D'Alene Campground provides convenience without sacrificing wilderness. "Nice little campground with small amt of campsites, not really suitable for large groups or RVs so it's nice and quiet. It's walk in, but not far from the car," notes Stacey C.

Bear-proof storage options: Many campsites include safety features for food storage. "Walk in campsites are very close and have bear proof food storage," mentions Tanya B. about Coeur D'Alene.

Mountain views: RV sites at Stoney Creek RV Park offer scenic vistas. "Grounds clean and well kept. Has a creek that runs along the edge of the grounds and a awesome view of the mountains," reports Heath M.

Clean facilities: Many Whittier area camping facilities maintain good standards. "Nice campground with mountain views. Good laundry facilities and bathrooms with showers," Ellen E. shares about Stoney Creek RV Park.

What you should know

Weather challenges: Be prepared for wind and rain near Williwaw Campground. "Be prepared for WIND. I mean big wind. Bring extra stakes if you are tent camping. Be prepared for rain, lots of rain," warns Tanya B.

Wildlife awareness: Bear encounters are common in the area. "Be prepared for wildlife encounters. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen black bear along this road," Tanya B. cautions.

Insects vary by season: Bug intensity depends on weather conditions. "Bug Factor (1 minimal to 10 too many to enjoy): 5 if it gets sunny the bugs come out," notes one reviewer about Williwaw.

Limited cell service: Connectivity is unreliable throughout the region. "Cell service in Alaska is hit or miss but AT&T was pretty much useless and Verizon was not much better," reports Angie G.
