Winter access is extremely limited, with few facilities remaining open past early fall. Campgrounds like Three Bears Trapper Creek Inn & RV Park extend slightly later into the season, operating until October 31. Many locations have limited cell service, particularly at dispersed sites. RV parks typically provide basic amenities like toilets and trash service, while more developed locations offer electric hookups, water, and shower facilities. Waterfront campsites represent a significant draw in the Talkeetna area, with locations like Talkeetna RV & Boat Launch providing river access. Campers frequently mention the proximity to town as a key advantage, with most established campgrounds located within walking distance to Talkeetna's amenities. Several visitors highlighted the convenience of locations near the railroad tracks, though noted the associated noise from passing trains. A camper wrote, "Close to town but tucked away, this campground has a lot to offer. Larger sites for multiple campers and RVs and smaller sites tucked in the trees to protect your tent." Mixed-use campgrounds are common, with many accommodating both tent and RV camping, though some properties focus exclusively on one camping style. Mosquitoes can be problematic at riverside locations, particularly at dusk and dawn.

    Talkeetna Camper Park

    Good location, nice staff, …

A previous reviewer wrote all the nice things I have to say about this place except that the man in the office was very nice and helpful.

One downside: there are only a few bathrooms and they are both toilet and shower. This meant that there was a line in the morning because that’s a time when even those in RVs would prefer to use the facilities.

$3.00 in quarters for 4 min shower. If this was meant to speed things up, it didn’t.

    Montana Creek Campground

Unexpected Reroute Turns into a Great Find

Our planned stop at Three Bears Trapper Creek Inn& RV Park was a bust—their large pull-throughs were closed due to sewer issues—but they recommended Montana Creek Campground about 20 miles south. We called, and they told us to come on in. Located just off the Parks Highway/AK-3, the friendly campground manager gave us a map of the dry-camping sites that were available, including a few in the tent section that could handle our 40’ fifth wheel and told us to pick a spot. We walked the grounds and chose back-in site 13 in the tent area, which was more than long enough for our rig and F450—we even got to put the back patio down. We needed to top off our water tank, but the spigot had weak pressure, so the fill took a while. Afterward, we backed up in the large parking lot and headed to our site. We had 2 bars LTE on Verizon and 1 bar roaming on T-Mobile. The site had a picnic table, fire pit, and a nice stand-up grill. The campsites on the north side have 30 AMP but no water. Toward the back of the campground are more wooded pull-through and back-in dry-camping sites—some well spaced with privacy from shrubbery—but this area isn’t tall-rig friendly. The campground filled up over the weekend with locals from the Anchorage area. The same office also registers campers for the Montana Creek Recreation Site across the street, which is essentially a back-in parking lot for smaller rigs. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay—especially with the chance to get in some fly fishing.

    Susitna River Banks

    Nice play for two days

Wanted a place to boondock for a couple of days near Talkeetna. Found this spot and it’s amazing.
We are in our truck camper which could drive down no problem. Might be an issue for bigger rigs. Found a good mostly level spot and had two peaceful days.

    Montana Creek Campground

    Nice little stop over campground

Check in was very easy. Guys at the store are very helpful. It is right off the road, so yes there is road noise. We had a pull thru site, very level with a picnic table and fire pit. Very close to Johnny on the spot toilet, which was very clean. There are electricity hook ups but no water. There is a potable water fill up but no dump. Mosquitos galore though this time of year. Really pretty Creek. Great wifi near the well stocked store. Close to supermarket too. Great place to visit is Talkeetna

    Susitna River Banks

    Small overgrown space

The river basin was cut off by a large flow of river limiting all vehicles to a small dirt driveway; fortunately there were few people camping so we made camp for the night. The mosquitoes were so bad however we stayed in the rv all night which is not our style.

    Riverside Camper Park

    Clean up after Denali

After breaking camp in Denali this was a great spot just far enough down the road to take a shower and do laundry. After 3 days of camp food the Thai restaurant right up the road was a dream come true. The showers and laundry worked flawlessly!,!,

    Talkeetna RV & Boat Launch

    convenient to town and shady

We stayed here in a 40'  5th wheel. The RV area is mostly in the trees and a few places are defined, but a lot is just pick your spot and park where you can fit. The places along the water will need to be shorter rigs or you would need to park parallel.  Close to town about 3/4 mile.  Solar charging is a challenge due to trees and Starling also. You can run generators. No water or dump station, but there is a dumpster near the office.

Guide to Talkeetna

Talkeetna sits at the convergence of three rivers—the Susitna, Chulitna, and Talkeetna—creating numerous waterfront camping opportunities at elevations around 350 feet. Summer temperatures typically range from 45-75°F, with significant mosquito activity near water bodies. Most camping options operate May through September, with limited facilities available during Alaska's challenging winter months.

What to do

River fishing access: Montana Creek Campground provides excellent fly fishing opportunities directly from campsites. "This is a beautiful spot right on the creek. You can just walk from your camper to the creek just on the other side of the retaining wall," notes Erik J. The campground serves as a strategic base for anglers targeting salmon runs.

Wildlife viewing: At Susitna River Banks, campers can spot moose, eagles and occasional bears along the riverbanks. "Wanted a place to boondock for a couple of days near Talkeetna. Found this spot and it's amazing," shares James B. Early mornings offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities.

Railroad watching: Campsites near town provide views of the historic Alaska Railroad. "Behind us is the train station which some may use for convenience. We only heard the train once so it really didn't affect sleep," writes Kristi D., who stayed at Talkeetna Camper Park.

What campers like

Denali viewpoints: Talkeetna RV & Boat Launch offers special mountain viewing opportunities. "The views of Denali are just steps away towards the river. One of the best views of Denali in my opinion!" reports Jessica E. The mountain is visible on clear days, typically early mornings before clouds build.

Forested sites: For those seeking shade and privacy, Montana Creek Campground delivers wooded settings. "It is heavily wooded and would be difficult to maneuver with a larger RV or toy hauler," cautions Erik J. These sites provide natural cooling during warmer summer days.

Restaurant access: H&H Restaurant & Campground combines camping with on-site dining. "The food here was great and the service was also very much appreciated," notes Joe C. Another option includes Alaska Hideaway RV Park, which sits near the Flying Squirrel restaurant where "they have fresh made breads and pastries, local produce, breakfast, lunch and on Fridays and Saturdays from 4 to 9 PM they have wood fire pizza."

What you should know

Site availability: Competition for spots intensifies mid-summer. "Sites fill up in the heart of summer so come during the middle of the week to increase your chance of grabbing a spot," advises Tanya B. about River Park Campground.

Noise considerations: Highway and railroad proximity affects some campgrounds. "This is a great place to fish and play but it is located right next to the Parks Highway which can be loud and busy with tourists and semis in the summer," explains Sierra S. about Montana Creek Campground.

Campground distinctions: Several similarly-named facilities exist in the area. "There are two campgrounds with the same name. One is a State Recreation site and the other is a private campground," clarifies Tanya B. regarding Montana Creek. This distinction matters when making reservations.

Tips for camping with families

Bicycle-friendly areas: Montana Creek State Recreation Site offers family-friendly cycling options. "Bring your bikes since there are a lot of bike trails around between this campsite and the one across the street. They are connected by a tunnel under the highway," suggests Tanya B.

Shower facilities: Three Bears Trapper Creek Inn & RV Park provides superior bathing options. "It is a great place to stay if you are looking for a laundry facility and a nice shower. Those facilities are newer and top notch!" shares Staci J. These amenities prove especially valuable for longer family stays.

Spacing considerations: Many tent areas position campers close together. "The tent sites are pretty simple and very close together. There are just a few small, thin trees separating each site so you end up very close to your neighbor," notes Staci J., highlighting potential privacy challenges for families.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Check site conditions before committing to spots. At Talkeetna RV & Boat Launch, "they added more sites recently and it's nice but only gravel pads and not all sites are level," reports Jennifer M. Bringing leveling blocks helps address this common issue.

Shower payment system: Bring quarters for pay showers. "You do have to pay to use the showers, so bring quarters! My husband took a shower and said it was fine. I opted to shower in our camper!" explains Kristi D. about Talkeetna Camper Park's facilities.

Water pressure challenges: Plan extra time for tank filling operations. At Montana Creek Campground, "we needed to top off our water tank, but the spigot had weak pressure, so the fill took a while," reports MickandKarla W. This consideration affects arrival and departure timing for RVers.
