Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Rogersville, AL

Joe Wheeler State Park Campground accommodates pets in tent, RV, and cabin sites throughout the park's improved and primitive camping areas. Located 5 miles from Rogersville, this Tennessee River campground provides full hookup RV sites with fire rings and picnic tables, along with primitive camping options for tent campers with pets. T's Outback RV Park and Plato Branch Farm - Peaceful Acres RV Park also welcome pets on their grounds. Campground rules generally require pets to remain leashed while outside, and owners must clean up after their animals. The primitive camping section at Joe Wheeler features abundant shade and nearby water access, making it particularly suitable for camping with dogs during warmer months. Recent visitors note the campground has undergone renovations after tornado damage, with the newer section offering wider, roomier sites while the older section maintains full tree coverage.

The Tennessee River shoreline provides excellent opportunities for dogs to cool off during summer camping trips. Hiking trails throughout Joe Wheeler State Park allow leashed pets, with multiple paths accessible directly from the campground. Several camping loops offer water views where campers can fish with their pets nearby. The day-use lake beach area provides additional recreation options, though pets may have restricted access to swimming areas. Campers should be prepared for wildlife encounters, as the park is home to numerous deer, squirrels and birds. The campground store carries basic pet supplies and necessities. When visiting during peak summer seasons, early morning and evening walks are recommended to avoid heat stress on pets, as daytime temperatures can become uncomfortable for dogs, especially on paved surfaces.

    Point Mallard City Campground

Only a small area is for short term , no wifi

No wifi per office with no known date of repair. Relatively quiet, lots of vehicle traffic and golf carts. Office staff is very helpful and friendly. Majority of park is longterm. Dog friendly, no dog park at location. Close to shopping but far enough away for quiet.

    Bama Campground & RV Park

Great campground to hike Bankhead National Forest

This is a great little campground tucked away on the edge of Bankhead National Forest. The location of the campground makes it an excellent location to enjoy the numerous waterfall hikes in the area. The campground was laid out well with spacious gravel sites and full hookups. Sites 2-4 had good views of the pond/field, sites 10-15 backed up to the tree line to provide a little shade all other sites had full sun. The camp host was super friendly and helpful. They have a general store, laundry, bathhouse, and small dog park. The campground has hiking trails on the property if you don’t have time to visit Bankhead NF. If you’re in the area or wanting to spend time in Bankhead NF I’d recommend checking this campground out.

Redstone Arsenal RV Park & Campground

    Parking lot

This is your typical military PCS campground for people in transit. No shade! Cement pads to park on. A laundry room, pavilion and showerhouse. There is a dog park and you are off the beaten path. Which makes it a little difficult to find the first time. But when you do your like “Duh! It was right here.” So useful for an overnight if you have a military/retired ID.

Redstone Arsenal RV Park & Campground

    Nice Military FAMCAMP

The campground(CG) was easy to find for our mid-October stay. We exited off on 14A to gate 9 where we went through the gate and then did a u-turn to take us back down past the golf course to the CG. We had no problem doing the u-turn with our 40' fifth wheel. We followed the signage to the CG and then into pull-through site 21 with FHUs. There was no formal check-in, but our name and stay dates were on the site post. The pads here are huge and the utilities including 50 AMP worked well. We got 3 bars on Verizon and 2 bars on T-Mobile along with a large selection of OTA channels. We could have used satellite as there are no trees near the RV sites. They have a nice fenced dog park plus a shower and laundry facility with 4 machines each costing$1. The WiFi worked well for a CG this size. Use Gate 8 near the commissary and BX versus 9. Gate 8 gives you an easier drive to the campground. Overall we enjoyed our overnight stay.

    Monte Sano State Park Campground

Top of the Mountain with Great Views

We heard from other campers that if you go to Huntsville, Alabama that you have to stop at Monte Sano State Park. We took our Class C up the mountain and was able to reserve full hookups in a nicely wooded area. Sites were level gravel with picnic tables and grill. Great place to bring a trail bike or take hikes. Pet friendly.

    Quail Creek RV Resort

    Well Run Campground

We received an email with arrival information, which stated to pick up our site and park information at the shower and laundry facility as you entered the RV Park portion of the golf resort. The information provided a campground(CG) map and our site number. We proceeded to pull through site 25 with FHUs. The site was plenty long enough to situate and disconnect for our two-night stay. Some pull-through reviews stated spacious, and I guess if you rate pad length, that could be accurate, but the sites are close together. The water pressure was excellent, and we really liked the new cedar picnic table. We noticed WiFi transponders throughout the CG. This CG has the most WiFi transponders we’ve ever seen, counting five per row of 20 campsites. The CG WiFi was pretty good, but we put up our Starlink with no problem getting a northern shot. There would not have been a problem with a southern sky shot as well. Soon after we set up, the very nice CG host/manager came by to ensure we didn’t have any issues or questions, which we did not. We got 3 bars on Verizon. The CG is fairly large, with full-time or seasonal leases. They do not have a dog park, but there are plenty of areas to walk your dog. They have dedicated spots for short-term campers. The motel and golf course facilities are adjacent and are located further back on the property. It was nice that there was a separate road to the resort area as the locals drive rapidly to and from the golf course. We played a round of golf and were surprised that the course is not very well maintained, but it does get a lot of play. The CG and the golf course are actually separate entities even though they are co-located. Drove the 15 minutes into Hartselle and were pleasantly surprised by amenities such as the Walmart and especially a very nice, well-stocked Krogers. We enjoyed our stay at this very nice CG.

Tip: Go left at the stop sign on Mt. Zion Rd from Nat Key Rd when departing the CG! When we departed, heading back towards the interstate, you come to a stop sign. Our RV GPS and Waze wanted us to turn right on Mt. Zion Rd instead of going left as we did when we arrived. We took the right turn, and about the time the trailer swung, we saw the drop-off into the ditch, and the driver’s side wheels went into it, knocking off a snap pad. We stopped at the old country store parking lot at the next turn and checked for damage. Thank goodness we only lost a snap pad.

    Corinth Recreation Area

    We'll Be Back!

    **Corinth Recreation Area– USFS **

Corinth Recreation area is located near the town of Double Springs, Alabama. The area is operated and maintained by the United State Forest Service (USFS) and can be reserved through www.recreation.gov. There are 52 total sites here and most reserved on line, there are a few sites only available as walk ins. This area is very clean and really quiet at night, the campgrounds are near the lakes edge but not lakeside. The sites are very well maintained, paved and gravel with full services including sewer. There are two RV campgrounds, Firefly and Yellowhammer. We stayed at Yellowhammer as this had more shaded sites than Firefly. There’s also a few tent only sites between the two loops. The bathrooms were clean and the staff was pleasant during our visit, we stayed five days and found so much to see near by the campground. There is very nice boat ramp on the park for easy access to Smith Lake, the beach area is also a great asset. Clean with a well-marked swimming area with bathrooms near the beach area.

The Houston Jail (http://soloso.com/houston/) was a few miles away, this is the only surviving jail constructed from logs in 1818. It’s a historical landmark and worth the short drive to go and see.

Natural Bridge Park (https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/alabama/natural-bridge-al/) is located in Natural Bridge, Alabama is also nearby. This rock formation is the longest sandstone natural rock bridge east of the Rocky Mountains. It’s a good hike through well marked trails and there is a small gift shop that also sells refreshments.

Dismals Canyon (https://www.dismalscanyon.com/) is thirty miles from the campground near the town of Phil Campbell, Alabama. This natural formation will make you question if you are really in Alabama. The hike is a good way to spend the day in a shaded but humid natural wonder. You can also attend a night hike to see the dismalites that only reside in a few places in the world.

The Bankhead National Forest surrounds the entire area. The forest is huge and trying to visit the area waterfalls and trails without a plan is not recommended. Take the time to study the area maps and map the accessible roads before heading out. We actually stopped by the NSFS Office to ask for information, there was also a large map of the area there you can take a picture of that will help you with your planning.

We had a wonderful time here at Corinth, we especially liked the campground and the deer that would come out to graze every evening. This coupled with the fireflies really made this stay memorable, we’ll be back.

Guide to Rogersville

Joe Wheeler State Park Campground features two distinct camping loops with different characteristics. Located on the Tennessee River, the campground sits at approximately 500 feet elevation with seasonal temperatures ranging from summer highs around 90°F to winter lows near 30°F. Most campsites can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet in length with hookups available throughout the park.

What to do

Hiking trails for all levels: The trail system at Joe Wheeler State Park Campground connects directly to campsites with varied terrain. "Very clean, well kept campground. Bath houses kept very clean. Small general store at check in with necessities. Beautiful location with several hiking trails and places to kayak," notes Madeline A. about the trail accessibility.

Water recreation options: Beyond the Tennessee River shoreline, nearby Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday offers additional water activities. "This is a huge, beautiful campground with spots that back right up to the water's edge. There are plenty of amenities for the kids, and we had a blast. Definitely pack lots of bug repellent if you stay on the water," shares Elizabeth H. after visiting the KOA.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple locations near Rogersville provide fishing access for campers with pets. According to Michael C. at Joe Wheeler, "Stayed in A25 RV/Tent spot and had a beautiful view of the lake. Great little hiking trails near by." The Tennessee River and nearby lakes contain bass, catfish, and crappie throughout the year.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained amenities at campgrounds near Rogersville. "There were several of us on this trip. Had lots of fun. Had a nice hiking trail by Wheeler Lake. It was cool camping in February 2017 and we cooked over the fire and enjoyed the nice weather," writes Leesha J. about Joe Wheeler State Park.

Water views: Point Mallard City Campground offers additional water features not far from Rogersville. "Nice clean campground. Walking distance to water park. Sites are very nice, although a little close to each other," notes Timothy R. about this alternative camping option.

Family-friendly environments: Pet owners appreciate the welcoming atmosphere at T's Outback RV Park for both children and animals. As Matthew M. explains, "Very nice campground. The owner is so helpful. It was tight but the owner helped us get backed in at 6:30 pm on a Sunday. Very much under priced for what this park is."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Winter camping offers a different experience with fewer crowds but cooler temperatures. At David Crockett State Park Campground, Nancy B. shares: "Our first time RVing and this is where we stayed!! We really liked that the pads were concrete and level....took a lot of pressure off of the leveling process. Campground is clean and very quiet at night."

Site selection matters: Different loops offer varied experiences at the same campground. At Plato Branch Farm - Peaceful Acres RV Park, Justin J. notes: "This place is secluded and quiet. The grounds were well kept. I highly recommend it," highlighting the importance of researching specific site locations before booking.

Reservation timing: Pet friendly camping near Rogersville, Alabama requires advance planning, especially during peak seasons. Some campers report Joe Wheeler's popularity fills sites quickly. Kirk S. emphasizes that Joe Wheeler has "ONE OF THE BEST STATE PARKS IN ALABAMA GREAT TRAILS LARGE RV SITES GREAT STAFF AND GREAT EVENTS PLENTY OF WILDLIFE RUNNING AROUND."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Monte Sano State Park Campground provides additional options for families with children and pets. "There are cool little wooden play obstacles for the kids in the campground and a huge playground 1/2 mile away inside the park. The Japanese garden is very cool also," writes Greg S.

Safety considerations: Keep pets secured around campsite activities, especially with children present. When camping with children and pets, maintaining distance from wildlife is essential. Brent W. describes Monte Sano as having "Clean restrooms, hot showers. Great hiking and mountain biking. Nice playground for children, much nicer than many private campgrounds."

Multi-day planning: Organize activities across several days when visiting with families and pets. Point Mallard City Campground offers additional attractions: "Nice campground. Walking distance to water park. Sites are very nice, although a little close to each other," according to Timothy R.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: RV campers should prepare for varied terrain at most campgrounds near Rogersville. At Jay Landings Marina & RV Park, Steve D. notes: "Site was very clean and well spaced from other campers. Site was level and required no adjustments to level the RV." This makes setup easier after arriving.

Hook-up quality: Full-service sites provide different levels of amenity quality. According to Gene S. at Jay Landings, "Jays landing has many amenities, full hookups, pool, boat docks, fishing dock and a nice area to gather near the River. Staff was very friendly and works with us on last minute reservations."

Navigation challenges: Some campgrounds have narrow access roads requiring careful navigation. For pet owners with larger rigs, T's Outback RV Park works well, with Matthew M. explaining: "Very nice campground. The owner is so helpful. It was tight but the owner helped us get backed in at 6:30 pm on a Sunday."
