Reservations fill fast here, especially on weekends when the park enforces a two-night minimum for online bookings. Red Top Mountain State Park Campground sits along the shores of Lake Allatoona in Acworth, Georgia, with sites ranging from full-hookup pull-throughs to walk-in tent pads that extend onto points of land surrounded by water on three sides. Nightly rates run $40 to $315 depending on site type, and the campground stays open year-round. Campers arriving after hours should call ahead for the gate code.
The layout rewards site selection research. Several sites along the water provide direct lake access, with some positioned low enough to launch a kayak from camp. Others look out over wooded valleys rather than neighboring sites. Large natural rock outcroppings appear throughout the campground, a feature of the local iron-ore terrain that gives individual sites a distinct feel. The park has roughly 15 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, and Lake Allatoona supports fishing and swimming. Jeff E. notes that the park is "clean and scenic," though he also flags that I-75 traffic noise carries into camp at night, along with a train whistle that tends to sound in the early morning hours.
Bathhouse conditions have drawn mixed feedback over the years, with older reviews citing deteriorating fixtures. More recent stays suggest renovations have improved things considerably, including a rebuilt dump station with two bays, a concrete pad, and rinse water. Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer are available on some sites, though walk-in tent sites near the lake may have electrical connections too far from the pad to be practical.
Road access through the park is winding and can be tight in spots. Allen S. notes that RV and trailer campers would "definitely have trouble getting into" certain sites, and recommends checking site-specific geometry before booking. The online reservation system includes photos of individual sites, which helps. Pets are allowed, and the staff consistently draws positive mentions across reviews for being responsive and helpful.
Campers exploring campgrounds around Red Top Mountain State Park will find nearby options if the park is fully booked. For a lakeside site with full hookups and trail access close to Atlanta, this one is worth planning for in advance.
Description
This popular park on Lake Allatoona is ideal for swimming, water skiing and fishing. Visitors can bring their own boats or rent from nearby marinas. A sand swimming beach is nestled in a cove and surrounded by trees, providing a great place to cool off during summer. Picnic shelters and group shelters may be rented for meetings, parties, reunions and other celebrations. Guests often stay overnight in rental cottages, a spacious campground, or the park’s lakeside yurt. While best known for the 12,000 acre lake, Red Top Mountain is also a hiker’s haven. More than 15 miles of trails wind through the forested park, providing opportunities for exercise and nature photography. A short, paved trail behind the park office is suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, welcoming guests to explore a reconstructed 1860s homestead. The gravel-topped 4 mile Iron Hill Trail is open to both hikers and bikers, offering pretty views of the lake’s shoreline. Named for the soil’s rich red color caused by high iron-ore content, Red Top Mountain was once an important mining area. Iron pour programs are occasionally held near the Vaughn Cabin behind the park office. The park also maintains Allatoona Pass Battlefield, a historically significant battlefield due to the well-preserved trenches and earthworks.
