Wet trip

Campground is a 5. Experience was a 3 due to rain 75% of the time I was there. No one else there first night. 2nd night was a young man who was trying to get out before dark. He got stopped by herd of cows and returned. Dirt road in is mostly sand, but several sections get muddy and greasy with rain. It has been abnormally wet this year and it looks like most people are skipping this campground due to accessibility. I would not recommend a sedan when wet. Vault toilet was clean and well supplied. Forest road trees were being trimmed back.

Nice, small campground

Went back in August of 2020. Road in from Douglas was part of the adventure. Dodged some cows and saw cool rock formations.  Got one of the last spots.  Several ATV's on the road which made walking the dog interesting.  Great little creek running through the campground and nice, friendly people at the other sites.  Left campground by continuing on down the dirt road. Got dodgy in a few places. Would recommend retracing back to Douglas.

Great, secluded campground

The drive there is very private and scenic. The first 25 miles are paved from Douglass, then  the road turns into a dirt path. The path is private and goes through many pastures with cows and deer, so watch out. The dirt road is in good condition and mostly smooth. There is no signs telling how far the campground is. There is only one sign, which is a little over half way. There are no gas stations nearby, so get gas in Douglass. The site itself consists of 6 campsites. They are relatively close to each other but are separated by trees, so it give it privacy. The sites have fire ring (some provided fire wood!) and picnic tables. There is a creek that flows and gives a nice sound when all is calm. The guard station is less than half a mile from the entrence of the campsite, so if you need any help just go up to the gate and they will be out. It is really pretty and secluded. We were the only in the entire campground.

Remote camping amidst boulder outcroppings

What an amazing place! It deserves more than 5 stars.

The road to this part of Medicine Bow National Forest is interspersed with private land to present some beautiful scenes. This is part of the Trans-American Trail, an off-road route that crosses the country. 2 miles of gravel and 11 miles of dirt roads bring you through cattle at the start(literally... we had to wait for them to move off the road) and rocky boulder outcroppings and across babbling streams. It’s a lot longer drive than you first think because your speed drops slower the further you go. Some of the ruts made by water runoff were jarring even at a snails pace and prompted our 10 mph speed with quick slowdowns quite often. This is an adventurous route that is as much fun as it is beautiful.

Campbell Creek is a small camp with a water hand pump and a vault toilet. The sites are nestled along the creek in varying ways. The free cuts across from one side to the other. Some sites are not set up for trailers or RVs. If you don’t have a tent you could park your camper and move your car to the parking spots at the entrance. We arrived by 2 and had choices but others arrived shortly after. Sitting in site 2, we can’t even see the neighbors- unless someone takes the site directly across from us(it stayed vacant- yes!). For now we will enjoy our space and recover from that drive.

Be sure to wake in the middle of the night and look at the stars. There are no lights out here and the sky lights up.

The Twin Peaks trailhead is just down the road. Head out for a hike and see things up close. Another camper is scouting out elk hunting locations. Hunting season dates might be another thing to check on.

Be sure to have maps- either downloaded or on paper. Cell service ended miles back.

This is an amazing location that will satisfy your adventurous spirit.
