    Wedges Creek Hideaway

Rustic Glamping - exactly what we were looking for

This is a diamond in the rough - exactly what we wanted on our journey.  Our criteria - less than $100, pet friendly and rustic.

This is a sawmill that has it all - they run the mill when needed, but also have primitive cabins (where we stayed), full cabins with in house bath, electric RV/tent camping and more. Even wood fired pizzas with homemade crust most nights of the week and sometimes live music!

We were in cabin #3 - rustic.  Yes - it did have heat!  A little ceramic heater had it so toasty when it was 30 degrees outside we actually turned it off - so it's sure to please on chilly nights.  The interior was amazing - lumber that I'm sure came from the mill and ceiling planks that were gorgeous - left over planks from many years ago, stored in a shed and re-purposed for the cabin. The bed was very comfortable with clean sheets and squishy (in a good way) pillows. A small covered front porch and we just parked in front.

Bathroom - if you are in a cabin without a bath, it's very nearby. One of the largest, cleanest bathrooms I've seen.  He built it himself. Women's had 2 sinks with a large vanity area, about 3 stalls (very large - you don't have to squish into them) and two very large shower stalls with full doors - not shower curtains. Heated as well.

Pets - easy pet policy. Just let the owner know and it's no problem as long as you are responsible, pick up after them and leash them when necessary.  Just a small charge for them and they were very welcomed here.

He even has event space indoors (heated) and outdoors for weddings and such.  And hiking trails (6 miles) if you choose to take on the outdoors.

The owner plans on adding saunas and a hot tub in the near future - so this would be the place to drop for a while if you want something out of the norm, peaceful, rustic and relaxing. It's off the main road, behind a field in Amish Country.  Lovely place to stay for the night. Very quiet.

    Lake Wissota State Park Campground

    Beautiful family campground

Beautiful shaded campground with semi private sites. Nice beach that is a walkable distance from the sites. Lots of walking, biking and horse trails that are full of wild berries. Several stairways down to the lake, no beach at these spots but good for taking the dog in the water since they aren’t allowed on the beach. Wonderful staff in the visitor center. Firewood and ice sold on site. Also boat rentals and free yard games that can be checked out at the visitor center. Clean bathrooms with showers. Lots of boat noise from the lake and a plane noise from a nearby airport. Close to Chippewa Falls for restaurants and stores. A great family destination, not so great for a peaceful couples weekend.

    Council Grounds State Park Campground

    Wonderful

We love it here and can’t wait to go back and camp again. Tall trees, peaceful, quiet, new fire pits, good bathrooms. Friendly attendant at welcome station. Abundant firewood right at entrance. We may choose a different site next time as ours was a bit close to our neighbors, but really not a deal breaker! We just prefer a little more privacy, but even with that we’d camp at this site again. Trail to river is short and easy to access. Lots of places along river to geocache, walk, or just relax and watch the world go by.

    Lake Wissota State Park Campground

    Pristine setting

This campground/park is so beautiful. The campsites are all private and secluded. We really enjoyed that it was all so unspoiled, yet all the areas/paths were well cared for and clean. We brought our dogs and they had a blast too. My only complaint is about the campers who had our site before us. They pulled out of site 111 at 3:10 on Friday the 24th of July and left the site like a pigsty. The fire pit was filled to the rim with garbage; including dirty diapers and underwear filled with poop. It was disgusting. If people don’t know how to clean up after themselves, they shouldn’t camp. Stay home.

    Lake Wissota State Park Campground

Great Fourth of July Site for 3 Day Stay

We took site 87 for two separate tents, 2 vehicles, and an EZ-up over the table, and we really enjoyed it.  That site is very private with a nice hook in the clearing in the woods that made us feel isolated from the camp road, yet we were close to the water pump and to the back walkway into the bath house area.  We discovered the single family bathroom on the South side of that bldg early on, and that helped us feel more comfortable using facilities during this physical-distancing time.

I wondered if the sites closest to the water have any access, but not sure.  The boat dock and beach launch for kayaks is close by car, and we used it twice.  You can also access the water via a 0.5m walk or by bikes on the main car road.  Lovely waters - if you paddle North towards the park shoreline, there are shady places to tie up under white willow trees, or to land and use secluded tie-up points just South of the beach area.  Further North of the beach gets busy with power boats taking off for the big waters of the lake, but worth exploring that shoreline too.  If you paddle south, it's a more calm section with private shorelines but terrific sunset views.

    Lake Wissota State Park Campground

    Beautiful

Camped at Lake Wissota for 3 days. First time there and really liked it. Nice private sites and the beach looked great but it was too cold for swimming. Got in a canoe ride before the rain. No bugs I guess it was too cool. Bath house in bad need of updating which they're planning on but I've been in worse. Awesome park rangers. Did some local site seeing and I highly recommend lunch in Cornell at Dylan's Dairy. Had the best breakfast at Kelly Grill in Stanley across from the old depot. Nice get away despite the rain.

    Chippewa NF Campground

    Relax in the Woods

There are tons of sites across three loops, spaced apart with picnic tables, fire pits, and plenty of room. Most sites are level– we were only staying one night and didn’t even need to unhook our pickup. The lake is very close with a trail to a beach and dock. The bathrooms have flush toilets and showers. We didn’t have our ATVs with us, but the trails looked like narrow gravel roads. It wasn’t busy– on a Thursday in July only about¼ of the sites were taken. We had one bar on Verizon.

Guide to Medford

Camping options near Medford, Wisconsin provide access to the state's north-central forests and waterways at elevations ranging from 1,400-1,600 feet. The area experiences distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F and winter temperatures regularly dropping below freezing. Medford sits at the edge of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, where campers can find both established campgrounds and more rustic accommodations.

What to do

Kayaking on Lake Wissota: Located about an hour from Medford, Lake Wissota State Park Campground offers water recreation opportunities. "If you paddle North towards the park shoreline, there are shady places to tie up under white willow trees, or to land and use secluded tie-up points just South of the beach area," notes a camper who stayed at site 87.

Berry picking along trails: The forested areas near campsites often have seasonal wild berries. "Lots of walking, biking and horse trails that are full of wild berries," mentions a visitor to Lake Wissota State Park Campground, who also appreciated the "beautiful shaded campground with semi private sites."

River exploration: At Big Falls County Park, visitors can enjoy riverside exploration. According to one camper, "Very secluded/primitive. Outhouse only. Nice campsites & the river is gorgeous. Nice walking & exploring trails."

What campers like

Private, wooded campsites: Many Council Grounds State Park Campground visitors appreciate the natural setting. "We camped here many times in my childhood. Beautiful forest, boating, dam views along the Wisconsin River," shares one long-time visitor who gave the campground five stars.

Spacious group sites: For larger gatherings, some parks offer dedicated group areas. "For this particular trip, we reserved group sites A and B. They each have concrete pads for 3 campers and TONS of space to spread out and/or set up tents," writes a camper who visited Council Grounds with family.

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention bathroom quality in their reviews. At Chippewa NF Campground, a visitor noted, "Sites are spread out with woods between the sites. Flush toilets with token operated showers. Waterfront sites are usually full, but shallow boat ramp for trailers is close by."

What you should know

Weather considerations: Central Wisconsin weather can change quickly. "We had a huge storm during our stay that created a river in our site—so tent campers may want to choose wisely," warns a visitor to Council Grounds State Park.

Insect awareness: The wooded areas can have seasonal insect issues. One Sara Park camper mentioned that trains "go by at different times of the day. Heard one at 2:30 this morning," which might disrupt light sleepers.

Reservation requirements: Most established campgrounds require advance booking, especially for summer weekends. "On a Thursday in July only about ¼ of the sites were taken. We had one bar on Verizon," reports a Chippewa NF Campground visitor, suggesting weekday visits might offer more availability.

Tips for camping with families

Beach activities: Several parks offer swimming areas for children. At Council Grounds State Park, "Water was refreshing and there is a small beach area. Beautiful hiking trails, but watch out for the biting deer flies as the sun goes down!"
