Best Cabin Camping near Altoona, WI

Several cabin accommodation options are available within campgrounds near Altoona, Wisconsin. Wedges Creek Hideaway offers rustic cabins with heat provided by ceramic heaters, making them suitable for chilly nights. The cabins feature lumber interiors likely sourced from the on-site sawmill. "Our criteria - less than $100, pet friendly and rustic... The interior was amazing - lumber that I'm sure came from the mill and ceiling planks that were gorgeous," noted one visitor. Nugget Lake County Park provides camper cabins with two rooms - a sleeping room with two bunk beds (four beds total) and a front room equipped with a mini fridge, coffeemaker, toaster, microwave, and a futon.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. The O'Neil Creek Campground in Chippewa Falls offers cabin rentals with access to electric hookups and water. Most cabins include basic furniture and beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between properties - some provide only basic amenities like microwaves, while others include more comprehensive cooking equipment. Bathroom access also differs between cabin types; some have private facilities while others rely on shared campground restrooms and showers. Many campgrounds with cabin rentals maintain on-site stores or markets where basic provisions can be purchased, though planning ahead with groceries is recommended. Seasonal availability affects cabin options, with some properties closing during winter months while others remain open year-round with heated accommodations.

    Wedges Creek Hideaway

Rustic Glamping - exactly what we were looking for

This is a diamond in the rough - exactly what we wanted on our journey.  Our criteria - less than $100, pet friendly and rustic.

This is a sawmill that has it all - they run the mill when needed, but also have primitive cabins (where we stayed), full cabins with in house bath, electric RV/tent camping and more. Even wood fired pizzas with homemade crust most nights of the week and sometimes live music!

We were in cabin #3 - rustic.  Yes - it did have heat!  A little ceramic heater had it so toasty when it was 30 degrees outside we actually turned it off - so it's sure to please on chilly nights.  The interior was amazing - lumber that I'm sure came from the mill and ceiling planks that were gorgeous - left over planks from many years ago, stored in a shed and re-purposed for the cabin. The bed was very comfortable with clean sheets and squishy (in a good way) pillows. A small covered front porch and we just parked in front.

Bathroom - if you are in a cabin without a bath, it's very nearby. One of the largest, cleanest bathrooms I've seen.  He built it himself. Women's had 2 sinks with a large vanity area, about 3 stalls (very large - you don't have to squish into them) and two very large shower stalls with full doors - not shower curtains. Heated as well.

Pets - easy pet policy. Just let the owner know and it's no problem as long as you are responsible, pick up after them and leash them when necessary.  Just a small charge for them and they were very welcomed here.

He even has event space indoors (heated) and outdoors for weddings and such.  And hiking trails (6 miles) if you choose to take on the outdoors.

The owner plans on adding saunas and a hot tub in the near future - so this would be the place to drop for a while if you want something out of the norm, peaceful, rustic and relaxing. It's off the main road, behind a field in Amish Country.  Lovely place to stay for the night. Very quiet.

This is a really nice campground. The camper cabins are really nice. They have two rooms, a sleeping room and a front room. The sleeping room has 2 bunk beds (4 beds.) The front room has a mini fridge, coffeemaker, toaster, microwave, and a futon. The firepits are well taken care of. It is usually empty when you arrive. There is no.swim beach. Hok-Si-La City Park & Campground

    Perfect Camping Getaway!

This is one of my favorite campgrounds in Southern Minnesota! It is only 1 1/2 hours away from the TwinCities which makes it an ideal getaway. The campsites are wooded and have enough distance between them that noise is minimal. I especially love the view of Lake Pepin and the nice little swimming beach. On our last stay, we were able to watch eagles from our campsite, which was amazing. They have recently added 3 small cabins to rent which would be a nice alternative to tent camping. If you do plan a camping trip to Hok-Si-La and you're driving in from the Twin Cities, be sure to take Wisconsin Highway 35 through Maiden Rock, Stockholm, Pepin, and other small towns. You can loop back into Minnesota through Wabasha. This adds about an extra half hour to your drive but it is definitely worth it!

    Beautiful!

Such a quaint town and park!

We spent one night here and booked it for our wedding venue as well! The lake view was spectacular and the park manager, Joanne was so humble! Joanne lives on the grounds so it made for easy access to any answers we needed while camping. We were looking for an outdoor space surrounded by tall trees for our 2020 ceremony and this site hit the sweet spot! There are a number of grassy campsites as well as dirt sites. Bunk cabins are available as well! We stayed right on the edge of the lake and absolutely loved it. So serene!🙌🏾May is the perfect time to go if you’re looking for some peace and quiet away from other campers. This campsite also doesn’t allow cars or generators on any of the camping spots, so be sure to keep that in mind!

    Can’t wait to go back!

    Hok-Si-La City Park & Campground

    River View

This is a great site a few hours outside of Minneapolis where 2 of my closest friends hosted their wedding. The campsite is really beautiful with lots of great walking paths and a beach area where you can swim in the river. Make sure to reserve one of the large campsites along the water as you will get a spectacular sunset view and there are some great trees for hammocks. The sites have benches and fire pits and are large enough for a good sized group. There is also plenty of parking at each of the sites and they are fairly private.

If you are looking for a place to host a wedding I also highly recommend this location as it is so magical and already has a chapel space.

    Hok-Si-La City Park & Campground

Beautiful city campground, on Lake Pepin

We stayed on one of the group sites, G6 on the Tour De Pepin weekend. The campground was very full that weekend but the group sites are spacious and well spaced out, (if you can I would recommend G4 or G5 right on the lake for group sites) you definitely don't feel like you are on top of each other or another group. Near the group sites there is also a set of vault toilets.

The campground is very green and luscious, full of beautiful trees, plants and wildlife, we heard bullfrogs, owls, woodpeckers and more (there are also train tracks near by so a couple trains too). This campground is a tent only campground with a couple cabins as well, which adds to it's secluded feel.

There is great lake access for swimming and a shower houses (bring your quarters though, showers cost 50 cents for 3 minutes). The only down side is that you cannot leave any cars near your campsite, you can drive in to drop off or pick up your gear but otherwise vehicles are parked in the main parking lot outside of the gate, which is not a big deal but from the group sites it is a trek to the lot and to the beach.

I would definitely stay here again, the lake is incredible.

    O'Neil Creek Campground

    Very clean, quiet, great amenities

We stayed one with ones day notice after Labor Day. The site was waterfront and one hr prior to arriving experienced a mechanical problem with our tow vehicle. We made it to the campground. They were extremely helpful so much so that we were able to diagnose and resolve the issue on site with tools on hand. The restrooms were spotless. It appears many of the sites are season rentals.

Guide to Altoona

Cabins near Altoona, Wisconsin offer year-round shelter options ranging from basic rustic structures to more comfortable accommodations with amenities. The region experiences four distinct seasons with winter temperatures often dropping below freezing, making heated cabins particularly valuable from November through March. Most cabin rental properties in this area sit within a 30-minute drive from Altoona, primarily clustered around nearby lakes and forested areas.

What to do

Tubing and creek activities: O'Neil Creek Campground provides a natural creek perfect for family water activities. "Really enjoyed the experience! It's beautiful and good mix of quiet and lots of activity's. Can tube down the creek, very shallow so even littles can do it too," reports Stina M. The campground offers tube rentals for visitors who don't bring their own equipment.

Hiking woodland trails: The wooded areas surrounding Stargazen Retreat Center provide natural hiking opportunities with 25 designated tent sites and cabin options. The retreat center maintains toilet facilities and allows fires with firewood available on-site, making it suitable for overnight stays after trail exploration.

Lakeside activities: Nugget Lake County Park provides non-motorized lake access for fishing and paddling. "This is a really nice campground. The firepits are well taken care of. There is no swim beach. The trails and playgrounds are really nice," notes Shelly E. The park has heated bathrooms and pay showers available for comfort after outdoor activities.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Hixton - Alma Center KOA maintains well-kept bathroom facilities that campers consistently mention. "The lawn is cared for and there are flowers everywhere. Trash receptacles are close to the campsites and easy to access. It's a quiet atmosphere in a garden setting," shares Cheryl W., highlighting the attention to cleanliness and maintenance.

Family-friendly environment: O'Neil Creek Campground receives high marks for accommodating families. "This place is awesome for the whole family!! It has all kinds of activities for children and large pull thru sites, people are very friendly," notes Tony G. The campground hosts special events like "Christmas in July" with organized activities for children.

Private, spacious sites: Hok-Si-La City Park & Campground offers tent sites with good separation. "The campground was very full that weekend but the group sites are spacious and well spaced out, you definitely don't feel like you are on top of each other," explains Beth W. The park prohibits vehicles at campsites after unloading, which reduces noise and traffic.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most cabin facilities near Altoona operate seasonally. Hixton - Alma Center KOA runs from May 1 to October 31, while O'Neil Creek Campground operates from April 15 to October 15. Winter cabin options become more limited, with only select properties offering heated accommodations.

Reservation requirements: Sandy Hill Campground and similar facilities require advance booking, particularly for cabins. "Friendly owners. Well maintained grounds. Mostly seasonal sites. Nice beach across the road," reports Meredith J. Many campgrounds fill quickly during summer weekends and holidays.

Bathroom access: Cabin bathrooms vary significantly between properties. Some provide private bathrooms while others rely on campground facilities. "One of the largest, cleanest bathrooms I've seen. Women's had 2 sinks with a large vanity area, about 3 stalls and two very large shower stalls with full doors," reports Amy G. about Wedges Creek Hideaway.

Tips for camping with families

Off-season visits: Family cabins often provide more availability and better rates during shoulder seasons. "We stayed one with ones day notice after Labor Day. The site was waterfront... The restrooms were spotless," shares ScottnRobin L. about their experience at O'Neil Creek Campground.

Activity planning: Wedges Creek Hideaway offers unique activities beyond standard camping. "They host weddings and family events along with our popular brick oven pizza and live music weekends in the summer," notes Jeff V., providing dining options that reduce meal preparation needs for families.

Cabin selection for groups: Larger family groups should target specific cabin areas. "If you're staying with friends or have a large family, the group sites G0 and G2 offer views and lots of space for multiple tents. We've stayed here with a group of about 20 people with plenty of room," advises Emily H. about Hok-Si-La City Park.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Not all cabin-focused campgrounds offer full RV hookups. The Woodland in Augusta provides electric, water, and sewer connections but has limited amenities beyond these essentials. "This campground is behind the Woodland gas station. EC Adventures has a building on site where people can rent items like kayaks and canoes," notes Megan R.

Site leveling challenges: Some cabin and RV sites require equipment for leveling. "We had to use boards to level our rig. There's a swimming pool and a store and two bath houses," mentions Cheryl W. about Hixton - Alma Center KOA, highlighting the need to bring leveling equipment for RVs at certain locations.
