Creepy Woods

For this location you need a discovery pass which you can easily get online. We never saw anyone so I suppose you could potentially try without one. This is a gravel road off of the Hoh upper rainforest road that leads to the Olympic national park entrance. It's easy to drive right on by. It's a little book off of that side gravel road. If wet conditions this site may be easy to get stuck in the mud. It was dry when we went. The gravel road is mostly good with a few rough patches but in my Chrysler Pacifica hybrid I was able to avoid. It's very much in the moss covered trees woodsy area and very dark which made it hard to see if any wildlife was near. It's a nice little site close to park entrance just a little too close to wildlife for me.

Secluded spot

Amazing little spot right off 101 we stayed here a few nights it’s right outside of the Hoh Rainforest about 15-20 minutes! There was plenty of space and almost no noise from the highway.

National park landscape without national park prices

Huge pullout maybe 20 minutes outside of the Hoh Rainforest section of Olympic national park.

The national park was busy during the day, but nobody passed by this spot while we were there. Hard to get that kind of solitude so close to a NP.

As previous camper mentioned it’s free once you have a Washington Discover Pass

No At&t or Sprint service

There was a homemade firepit at the site but not entirely sure about legality of having a fire there

Great "Free" campsite just outside of National Park

Great campsite if arriving late to get into the park at the Hoh Rain Forest entrance. There are no amenities and require the Washington State discovery pass to utilize this state land ($10 a day or $35 year). There is plenty of room for larger RVs and travel trailers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the dispersed camping spots along Upper Hoh Road?

The dispersed camping spots along Upper Hoh Road are located approximately 15-20 minutes outside the Hoh Rainforest entrance to Olympic National Park. Look for a gravel road off the main Upper Hoh Road that can be easy to miss. There's a large pullout area that provides ample space for camping, including room for larger RVs and travel trailers. This area offers a quiet experience with minimal highway noise and good solitude, especially in the evenings when park day visitors have departed.

How does Upper Hoh Road dispersed camping compare to South Fork Hoh Campground?

Upper Hoh Road dispersed camping offers more flexibility with a large pullout area that accommodates bigger RVs and travel trailers, while South Fork Hoh Campground typically has designated sites. The Upper Hoh location provides excellent solitude despite being just 15-20 minutes from the popular Hoh Rainforest entrance, with minimal traffic, especially in evenings. Unlike South Fork, Upper Hoh requires a Washington State Discovery Pass but no camping fee. Upper Hoh has no amenities, making it better for self-sufficient campers who prioritize convenience to the rainforest over facilities.

What are the regulations for dispersed camping on Upper Hoh Road?

Camping at Upper Hoh Road requires a Washington State Discovery Pass ($10 daily or $35 annually) as it's located on state land. No additional camping fees are required once you have the pass. There are no amenities provided, so campers need to be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. The area can accommodate larger RVs and travel trailers, but there are no hookups or services. While enforcement may vary, always display your Discovery Pass properly when staying at this location.
