Deer Lake

Back country permit required. The lake is accessible by a couple of routes. There is a short but steep hike in from the Sol Duc area, so you could potentially do this as a day hike. I saw some families doing this. Or you can take the Mink Lake route - longer for sure but beautiful. Also it is a part of the Seven Lakes Basin Loop. The sites are around the lake. Mine was right by a river. There is a toilet available. My only complaint was that it was pretty buggy. I would definitely go back.

The primary trails near Deer Lake include the Sol Duc Trail, which provides the most direct access to the lake through a steep but relatively short hike. For those seeking a longer adventure, the Mink Lake Trail offers a scenic alternative route to Deer Lake with diverse forest views. Once at the lake, you can connect to other backcountry trails within Olympic National Park's extensive trail network. These routes vary in difficulty, making the area suitable for different hiking abilities, from families on day hikes to experienced backpackers on multi-day treks.

How do I access Deer Lake Campground in Olympic National Park?

Deer Lake Campground is a backcountry site accessible by hiking only. There are two main routes to reach the lake. The most direct path is a relatively short but steep trail from the Sol Duc area of Olympic National Park. This route is challenging but doable as a day hike. Alternatively, you can take the longer Mink Lake route, which offers beautiful scenery along the way. When is the best time to visit Deer Lake Campground?

Summer and early fall offer the best conditions for visiting Deer Lake Campground. The trails are typically most accessible from July through September when snow has melted and weather is mild. This period also provides the most comfortable overnight temperatures for camping. Late spring visits may encounter lingering snow on trails, while early fall offers fewer crowds and beautiful foliage. Winter and early spring are not recommended due to heavy snowfall and challenging trail conditions. Check current trail conditions before any visit, as weather in Olympic National Park can be unpredictable.

What amenities are available at Deer Lake Campground?

Deer Lake Campground is a primitive backcountry site with minimal amenities. There are basic campsites for tent camping around the lake, but no developed facilities like picnic tables, fire rings, or restrooms.
