Great alpine lake

Camped up here last year, absolutely phenomenal! The hike can be a bit grueling and since I've done it the road leading to the trailhead has been shut down, so plan on adding a few more miles to your hike to get to the lake (around 7 miles.)

The first few miles on the trail are fairly level. Once you make it to Olympic hot springs (which is an amazing place to stay in it own right!) Take a right an start climbing. It's pretty much all uphill from there for 3-4 miles, but it's so worth it.

Boulder Lake is amazing and almost nobody camps up there it seems. Find a nice spot along the lake and take a dio in the lake as a reward for making it all this way!

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Boulder Lake Campground?

Boulder Lake Campground is a primitive backcountry site with minimal amenities. There are no developed facilities such as potable water, flush toilets, or picnic tables. Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient by packing in all necessary supplies and packing out all waste. The campground offers a true wilderness experience, so plan accordingly with proper food storage containers, water filtration systems, and camping gear suitable for remote locations.

What activities can I do at Boulder Lake?

Boulder Lake offers excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, and photography in a pristine alpine setting. Hiking is a primary activity, both to reach the lake (approximately 7 miles from the road) and to explore the surrounding wilderness areas. Wildlife viewing is rewarding, with various birds and small mammals inhabiting the area. For the adventurous, there are opportunities for backcountry exploration and stargazing in this remote location far from light pollution.

When is the best time to visit Boulder Lake Campground?

The optimal time to visit Boulder Lake Campground is during the summer months, typically from late June through September. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions and trail accessibility. Be aware that early season visits may encounter snow at higher elevations, while late September brings cooler temperatures. The campground is most accessible when the snow has melted from the trails. Always check current trail and road conditions with Olympic National Park before embarking, as the access road to the trailhead has been closed in the past, adding additional hiking distance.

How do I make reservations for Boulder Lake Campground?

No formal reservation system exists for Boulder Lake Campground. This is a first-come, first-served backcountry camping area within Olympic National Park. However, you will need to obtain a wilderness camping permit from the Olympic National Park Wilderness Information Center before your trip. These permits may have quotas during peak season, so it's advisable to secure them well in advance of your planned visit.
