What to do
Mountain biking trails: At Luzerne Campground, the surrounding area provides excellent terrain for cyclists. "Plenty to do: tubing and white water rafting (spring) great hikes, horseback riding, canoe/kayaking, zip lines, great local food and breweries in the area," notes Troy H.
Swimming in Lake Dunmore: Branbury State Park Campground features a sandy beach area for swimming during summer months. "The day use section has a wonderful beach with a swimming area and boat launch. Large trees provide shade on a grassy lawn, and grills are available," writes Lisa S.
Hiking on Rattlesnake Mountain: Trail access from Branbury State Park leads to moderate-to-difficult hiking with elevation gains of 1,000+ feet. "I've been here dozens of times, grew up going here every year and hiking rattlesnake. We make the trip from RI. Love to lake access, secluded camping, the hiking and remote area," shares Stephen T.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Many campers appreciate the generous site sizing at Moreau Lake State Park Campground. "Campsites are spacious, shady, and had good separation between the neighboring sites which we enjoyed. Generators are allowed but not too many people were using them," notes Nancy W.
Privacy between sites: The natural features at Branbury State Park create separation between campers. "Had an amazing time at Branbury. The site was so scenic with a little waterfall and stream nearby. There was plenty of space between sites so it didn't feel like you were on top of each other," explains Nicole E.
Equestrian facilities: Frontier Town Campground offers specialized areas for horse owners. "We stayed in site 33 which is in the equestrian camping area. It's really open with little tree cover which is perfect for those who work remote using Starlink. The sites in the equestrian camping area are huge and so clean," says Chelsea B.
What you should know
Bear activity: Wildlife precautions are necessary at several area campgrounds. "Just make sure you put your food and trash away- there are black bears in the area!" warns Nicole E. about Branbury State Park.
Seasonal limitations: Most equestrian campgrounds near Poultney operate within specific seasonal windows. Luzerne Campground runs from "May 19 to September 10" according to their listing information.
Shower facilities: Moreau Lake State Park showers can be inconsistent. "Both were clean but the shower fluctuated between lukewarm, hot, and warm during my shower. Oh well, the shower felt good after our active days," reports Nancy W.
Tips for camping with families
Lake activities: Luzerne offers multiple water-based recreation options for children. "We have been going to this campground for almost 15 years and my husband went here as a kid with his family. We get our site close to the lake so we can walk down and swim and my husband fishes. Love that we can rent boats too," shares Antoinette W.
Playground facilities: Branbury State Park has dedicated play areas for kids. "Spacious sites, hiking trails, biking trails, nice beach and grounds. Fishing, kayak, canoe, paddle boat and paddle board rentals. Theres a nature center with all kinds of information and activities. A large playground," reports J L.
Educational opportunities: Some campgrounds provide nature programs specifically for children. "The camp staff was so nice. They kept the bathrooms and areas so clean. Across the street from the campground was access to the lake with plenty of grassy areas to hang out," notes Nicole E.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for big rigs: Finding the right loop at Moreau Lake is crucial for larger rigs. "The road to our campsite was paved and in good shape but there were a few tight spots because of the trees that make it tricky for a big rig (Loop A seems to be the best for big-rigs)," advises Nancy W.
Hookup availability: Most horse campgrounds near Poultney have limited hookups or none at all. "This is dry camping so there are no hook-ups but there are restrooms and shower. Both were clean but the shower fluctuated between lukewarm, hot, and warm during my shower," explains a Moreau Lake visitor.
Maneuvering challenges: Some campground designs can make parking difficult. "Sites are built wrong so it is hard to get you camper into your site correct. It is definitely catered to the equestrian part of the camping," notes Sheri C. about Frontier Town Campground.
