Great Spot for Remote camping

I’ve camped here twice and I really enjoy it. The first time was in a tent and I rented a travel trailer for the second trip. The road is well maintained (its rough but I saw a Prius on it). No facilities, but I like that. It’s got some altitude, so it can be a little cold. Both times were in April. Last April the road has some decent snow covering it just last the bridge, but this year I was able to drive from Boulder to Escalante no problemo.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the drive on Hell's Backbone Road in Utah?

Hell's Backbone Road is surprisingly accessible despite its remote location. The road is well-maintained gravel and dirt that even passenger cars can navigate with care - small sedans like a Prius have been seen on it. While it is rough in spots and has some washboarding, it doesn't require high clearance or 4WD under normal conditions. Take it slow, watch for occasional ruts after rain, and be prepared for dust. The road is generally considered moderate difficulty - not technical driving, but rougher than paved highways.

Is Hell's Backbone Road in Utah suitable for RV camping?

Yes, Hell's Backbone Road can accommodate RVs for dispersed camping. The area has been successfully used with travel trailers, though you'll want to choose your spot carefully. There are no hookups or formal facilities for RVs, so you'll need to be fully self-contained with sufficient water, power, and waste capacity. The road is well-maintained enough to access suitable camping areas, though smaller to mid-sized RVs and trailers will have an easier time than large rigs.

What is the best time of year to camp along Hell's Backbone Road?

Spring and fall are generally the best seasons for camping along Hell's Backbone Road. The area sits at higher elevation, which means summer can be pleasant while lower elevations are hot. Spring (particularly May-June) offers moderate temperatures, though April can still be quite cold due to the altitude. Fall brings beautiful colors and comfortable temperatures. Summer is also viable but may have afternoon thunderstorms. Winter camping is not recommended due to potential snow, ice, and difficult access.
