Twin Lake Dispersed Area - Grand Valley Rd

Rough two-track roads lead campers to scattered sites along Twin Lake within Grand Mesa National Forest, where dispersed camping means finding your own spot among the trees. The access road requires high clearance and benefits from four-wheel drive, particularly after weather, as multiple reviewers note the bumpy conditions getting to the lakeside areas.

Sites cluster near the water with defined fire rings and parking areas, though Kat T. notes "there is a drop off you have to climb down" to reach the lake itself. Trees and natural features separate individual camping spots, providing some privacy despite their proximity. Cattle occasionally wander through the area, adding to the backcountry atmosphere that keeps this location relatively quiet during weekdays.

The lake supports fishing and non-motorized watercraft, with paddle boards and kayaks popular among visitors. Summer brings insects, as one reviewer mentions it gets "a little buggy" during peak season. Vault toilets serve the area, with one camper noting they were the "cleanest vault toilets I've ever seen."

For additional camping options in the region, campers can explore campgrounds around Cedaredge. The first-come, first-serve nature means arriving early improves chances of securing waterfront spots, particularly during busy periods when the dispersed sites fill with groups seeking lake access.

Campers regularly cited excellent privacy, quiet atmosphere, and stunning lake/mountain views as top highlights. Many mentioned clean facilities and self-made sites offering great spacing. Access requires high clearance vehicles due to rough roads leading to campsites.

Beautiful and Quiet

I was up there on a Tuesday-Wednesday so it was very quiet and there was no one else at the site. It’s right on the water although there is a drop off you have to climb down, but it’s not bad. There were some cattle that walked through as I was setting up but otherwise very chill. All sites had areas for parking and fire rings. Driving off the forest road and onto the small road getting up to the campsite, 4WD isn’t required but highly recommended, it is a very rough road. High clearance is necessary. The sites seemed kinda close to each other however there are trees and stumps that define each site. Amazing views, light rain, and still my favorite forest.

Buggy Mesa

A little buggy in the summer, but otherwise perfect. Make sure to bring your paddle board or fishing pole. Super quiet spot.

Can't beat the view!

You can camp at a designated campground right on the lake, or you drive up 24 and find a lot of dispersed camping available - all the way up to the little lakes (great for fishing too). The dispersed camping is above the lakes which offers incredible views but is first come, first serve. Definitely bring your paddle boards, kayaks, etc.

This is one of my favorite places in Colorado - but beware of the altitude! Drink lots of water, you will forget how high you are and a little altitude sickness might creep up on you, even if you've been here before without issues. It's also very close to Mt. Elbert and you should take Independence Pass to Aspen for a gorgeous drive and lots of wildlife!

Mountains and Water

While it's easy in the Chaffee County and Arkansas River area to get your dosage of mountain beauty and river time, Twin Lake gives you the opportunity to combine STELLAR mountain views and the calm of some lovely lakes. Tends to be less crowded than northern camp grounds. Get in early, go for a float on the lake and check out the upper reservoir North the of entrance highway.
