Part of Alaska's State Patented area, Blueberry Lake State Recreation Site sits at Thompson Pass elevation, where the highway curves around the campground in a way that creates interesting acoustic effects as sounds bounce off surrounding mountains. This Alaska Department of Natural Resources facility accommodates RVs up to 50 feet across 14 paved campsites, with reservations available for most sites and just two held for first-come, first-serve arrivals.
The campground's paved roads and vault toilets serve campers year-round, though facilities close during off-season months. Two pavilions along the lakeshore provide covered areas, while hiking trails loop around the water for under three miles. "Perfect spot to stretch stiff legs up in Thomson's pass," notes SJ D.. Fishing opportunities draw anglers to the lake, and blueberry picking becomes possible when berries ripen in summer months.
Cell phone service does not reach this elevation, and mosquitoes can be persistent during warmer months. The area frequently experiences cloud cover that can limit mountain visibility for extended periods. Sites cost $25 per night, with drinking water available and firewood provided. Campers exploring the region can find additional campgrounds around Valdez at lower elevations.
Bring extra blankets for the higher elevation temperatures, even during summer camping.
