IB Magee Beach County Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Rebuilt after hurricane damage, IB Magee Beach County Park sits directly behind the dunes in Port Aransas, with full hookups, concrete pads, and walking access to the beach, jetty, and Horace Caldwell Pier. Sites run up to 70 feet in length and include 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections, making this a solid stop for larger RV rigs. Reservations are available, and at $50 per night the park draws consistent crowds, particularly in summer.

The concrete pads are level and spacious, with a patio area at each site, though reviewers note the absence of fire rings and picnic tables. Sticker burrs are widespread in the grassy areas between pads. Coyotes have been reported behind the campground after dark, and multiple campers warn against leaving dogs unattended outside. Verizon users report one to two bars of cell service. Corina L. describes it as "very clean and close to the beach," though weekend bathroom traffic from day visitors can affect conditions.

Anglers can fish from the adjacent jetty, and the pier is within walking distance. Nearby options include Port Aransas Permit Beach for those who prefer driving on the sand, and Lafittes Hideout RV Resort for a more resort-oriented stay. Campers who want to explore camping near Port Aransas will find a range of options across the island. This park works best for RV travelers who want full hookups within easy reach of the water.

Huge sites on the beach

We can watch huge ships come to port and walk to the beach/jetty/pier. The sites are all huge concrete pads and spaced far apart. Downside: lots of burrs in the grass and coyotes live right behind the campground. They have apparently taken peoples dogs.

Perfect place to enjoy Port Aransas Beaches.

The campground is managed through the county. From what we understand, they rebuilt it after previous hurricane damage. All pads are concrete with new hookups. Granted, the city allows boondocking on the beach if one wants to tackle that. But this park is the best I have seen on the island. Pads have a patio but do not have fire rings and picnic tables. everything else was great. The only downside was there are sticker burs everywhere. Victorias on the Bay is a great restaurant with a great atmosphere. Also, recommend Port A carts for golf cart rental. They currently have reduced rates. They operate out of the Port A Icecream Shop around the corner. One place I recommend everyone to steer clear is Castaways Seafood and Grill. The food was cold and bland, the service was slow. On our first night here, unbeknown to us, they charge a Cashless Transaction fee and apply sales tax to the fee itself. This question of business practice is not posted anywhere in the restaurant, instead, it is placed at the very bottom of the menu. I challenged this with the manager(Beverly) and she basically said to pay in cash or I could call the cops. She was rude and obnoxious. I can not confirm if other restaurants practice this, but always make sure to ask upfront. The is one grocery(IGA) on the island, a Whataburger, and shops galor. This place is busy during the summer months.

Wonderful Site!

Spacious sites, long level, concrete pads (70' or so). All utilities are located at the rear of the pads on the driver's side rear corner. Took one, 25' water hose, 2 slinky's to reach the sewer drain. 50 amp hookup with no issues. We told most sites have stickers in the grass, site 27, where we stayed did not have many. We're told to stay off the grass with all vehicles, all sites have a nice large "front" yard. Do not leave you pooch tired up unattended outside, as there is a pack of coyotes they sneak around especially after dark. Or daughter had one sneak up to within 20' of her. Or Great Dane scared it off. The next night, I saw one silhouetted, at our neighboring site. The coyotes have been known to kill dogs left outside unattended. Other than the coyotes, this place is Awesome! The weather has been in the mid 80's, we came from 100's in central west Texas. We use Verizon, always had 1 to 2 bars of service. Steady breeze made it nice to sit under the awning. Quiet time is 10:00 pm till 9:00 am.

Park on the beach and go fishing

It’s definitely more crowded at this end of the island but it’s still a great spot! You can catch fish from the jetty and a quick walk to the beach. The sunsets are beautiful.

Great open Rv park between a jetty and a pier.

Very clean and close to the beach. This park has new cement slabs that are perfect for any type of rv rig. Currently there are no restrooms or bathhouses due to hurricane damage. It’s definitely not a deal breaker. The beach is about 2 min walk located between a ship channel jetty and pier, the perfect surf spot.

Great beach combing

The tent sites are grassy, which was very nice and the bathrooms were nice compared to what you'd find at a typical beach side facility that is also open to the public paying for its use. Note on the weekends, the bathrooms can get messy due to all the extra traffic. The rest of the time the bathrooms were clean. We paid for a $10 seven day pass into Padre National Seashore and went to that beach most of the time. It was much cleaner than IB Magee Beach.

A couple suggestions for tent camping:

  1. Pack light to stay cool. It is fairly warm throughout the summer.
  2. Keep the rain flap on tent. It was pretty windy the first couple nights.
  3. Bring earplugs to sleep in case it is windy.

Nearby attractions include Port Aransas Beach (1.2 miles), Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center (1.3 miles), and Mustang Island State Park (1.6 miles).
