Best Cabin Camping near New Waverly, TX

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cabins within the Lake Conroe area provide accommodation options approximately 30 minutes from New Waverly. Thousand Trails Lake Conroe offers cabin rentals with full hookup amenities including electricity, running water, and indoor bathrooms. Double Lake NF Campground in Sam Houston National Forest provides more rustic cabin options with electric hookups and picnic tables at each site. Most cabins feature beds, basic furniture, and climate control systems. Cabin interiors typically include small refrigerators, microwaves, and basic cooking facilities. Bathrooms may be private or shared depending on the specific location. "This resort is perfect! With a great pool, hot tub, playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, a lake with a beach and much more this is a great place for a family vacation."

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. The KOA in Montgomery offers more standardized cabin options while Happy Goat Retreat features "Luxury Tiny Cargo Homes" for a more unique experience. Reservations are essential, particularly during summer months when lake access is most desirable. Most cabin facilities maintain year-round availability with peak pricing during holidays and summer weekends. Pet policies vary significantly - Happy Goat Retreat prohibits pets while most other facilities allow them with restrictions and additional fees. According to one visitor, "We camped in site 31 which was nice for view and privacy but when rain came down, the soil from the above sites washed down hill."

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Basic kitchen supplies such as plates, cups and utensils are typically provided, though cooking equipment varies widely between properties. On-site markets are available at some locations like Lake Conroe-Houston North KOA and Bethy Creek Resort, while others have no provisions available. Refrigeration is standard in most cabins, though size limitations may restrict food storage capacity. Visitors staying at more remote locations should bring all necessary supplies, as the nearest full grocery stores may require significant travel time. Firewood is available for purchase at many sites that permit outdoor fires, though not all cabin areas allow open flames.

    Lake Houston Wilderness Park

    Really Nice Cabins

I have stayed in the cabins here four or five times. The first two years we had smaller groups so we stayed in the A Frame cabins. The last three years we've had their biggest one. There is a creek that runs through it and it is never over populated while I've been here. The cabin we've used was flooded and has not been rebuilt so we are looking for other places to hold our Spring Camp out. I hope they rebuild.

    Double Lake NF Campground

    Personal opinion for my interests

Campground not full. Very quiet, sites not on top of each other (some more private than others), gravel pads for rv, tent, table, lantern post and campfire ring. Water & electric or primitive sites both available. My personal agenda is all things nature related. The land, peace, plants, birds, land animals and TREES, water sources and types. To enjoy all the beauty (in all forms) which our earth provides.

    Rayford Crossing RV Resort

    Well Managed and Manicured

We had to return our travel trailer to the dealership for some warranty work and wanted to have one last little getaway before handing it over. We opted to stay somewhere in the vicinity of the dealership, and this campground had an opening. So, we booked one of the last remaining sites and hit the road!

Located in a suburban area north of Houston, the campground was very easy to find. It was nestled among nice suburban homes but still close to the amenities of a suburban city. We arrived after the employees left the front desk, so they instructed us to pick up our materials at the front office. We immediately noticed how well maintained this campground was. We easily found Site 21, a standard back in site. The sites are all concrete and level with a yard of grass and full hookups, which we really appreciate. We were surprised that our site didn’t have a picnic table like we thought, but we probably could have called to request one (wasn’t a huge issue in this July Texas heat).

This campground is more like a residential area. We noticed that many vehicles were gone early on a weekday morning. Many of the “campers” had potted plants and other items that indicated they were long-term occupants. There were many rules for the campground such as no items allowed on the grass or under RVs and no trash cans at sites, but none of these were unreasonable. Staff was visible throughout the day, often maintaining the grounds and collecting trash at each site (trash collection is each morning). It was extremely quiet, clean, and manicured.

Would we visit this campground again? Yes, if we plan to visit the Houston area for business in the future. We prefer the forest and the solitude that it affords, but this is a nice place to stay if you have business in the area. Rayford Crossing has amenities that may appeal to families with children such as a playground, beautiful pool, hot tub, shuffleboard, horse shoes, and fishing. The nice paved roads and sites and the dog park were nice as well. Our only complaints would be the price and lack of privacy, but I guess that’s to be expected in an RV resort near a major US city like Houston. Basically, it served our purpose.

    Thousand Trails Lake Conroe

    Very well kept TT campground

The campground is well laid out. Easy access to sites, amenities and the Lake. Although its a small portion of the lake on the campgrounds side, you do have access to boat rentals,  a boat launch and plenty of parking. So if you have a boat, it will be a wonderful experience. Plus there is a beach area for families to enjoy.

The cottages look almost brand new. The campground even has a location to wash your RV or vehicle.

    Park On The Lake

    VERY close together/owner is awesome

We stayed here on Labor Day weekend. It was very packed. However at this location everyone sits right on top of one another. There wasn’t even enough room to sit outside and enjoy it. I will have to say the owner is VERY helpful and nice. We pull a 35 foot 5th wheel and he originally had us in a spot where our rig would not fit. He was so kind enough on a busy weekend to swap us to a different spot at the very last minute. We were right on the water and we got to fish. If I had to rate this spot I would give it a solid 7 out of 10 just based on the fact that we were so close to one another. No fire ring or picnic table. Bathrooms were clean and facility in general there was pleasant.

    Emerald Lake Resort

    Freedom

Great nudist park with nice amenities. I've been there a few times during the day just to swim and I've camped once so far. There are electrical hookups available at the tent sites, which is what I had. The only downside I would say is there are no fire rings at the tent sites.

    Thousand Trails Lake Conroe

Great location with access to Lake Conroe, Nice Sites, we had a great time!

We went to watch the Eclipse in October, it was great weather, no clouds.  We had a great time.  Our RV site was roomy and there were a few sites surrounding us that were not occupied, which allowed us to spread out, kicking soccer balls and throwing footballs.  The kids loved it.  The boat launch is nice, we didn't have any watercrafts but will maybe try to bring a kayak or canoe next time we visit.

The location is not far from The Woodlands and Houston, and other attractions.  But still in a quiet area.

Guide to New Waverly

Cabin camping near New Waverly, Texas provides access to the dense pine forests of the Sam Houston National Forest at an elevation of around 300 feet. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while winter nights can drop below freezing. The area experiences significant rainfall throughout the year, with thunderstorms common in spring and early summer.

What to do

Swimming in Double Lake: Double Lake NF Campground features a designated swimming area that's especially popular during summer months. The shallow waters make it suitable for families with children. According to one visitor, "An excellent quiet NF campground with a nice swimming area and ample bathrooms/showers" at Double Lake NF Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Many cabin locations provide fishing access directly from the property. At Bethy Creek Resort, one camper noted, "Almost all spots have a great view of the lake. Ours had a deck right over the water. The fishing was decent too." The lake is stocked with catfish and perch, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced anglers.

Boating access: Several cabin rental facilities include boat ramps for easy water access. At On The Lake RV Resort, visitors appreciate the lakefront location. A recent visitor mentioned, "Our sites were amazing with gorgeous lake views with sunsets for dayyyys! The on-site restaurant had good cocktails and great food."

What campers like

Spacious sites: Unlike some crowded campgrounds, certain locations offer more privacy. A camper at Lake Conroe-Houston North KOA shared, "The spots are spread out with tons of room. We will be back here definitely!!!" This provides more comfort for cabin campers wanting personal space.

On-site dining: Some cabin facilities feature restaurants, eliminating the need to prepare all meals. A visitor reported, "The on-site restaurant had good cocktails and great food. We went during the winter (November, right before Thanksgiving), so didnt do any of the swimming/water activities."

Year-round accessibility: Cabin rentals in the New Waverly area operate throughout all seasons. A winter visitor to 7 Bridges Luxury RV Resort noted, "Spent this past weekend on a quick get away. This campground is very peaceful and relaxing. Very clean all around. Spent time at the pool that overlooks the lake and grounds."

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Booking ahead is essential, especially for premium spots. According to one camper at Venice On The Lake, "Charged me more then what I confirmed on the phone and when asked, she said it was because I was next to the lake (which I didn't ask for)." Always confirm exact rates and locations when booking.

Varying water quality: Not all properties provide potable water at campsites. One visitor noted, "Water from tap at site not potable and there's red ants everywhere (toes are so swollen this morning full of bites)." Bring drinking water if unsure about on-site sources.

Seasonal crowd variations: Campgrounds can be significantly busier during summer months and holidays. A visitor observed, "The campground is huge, and you cannot reserve a specific site. You drive around and pick a site, then call and let them know which one you're in. This is fine, but we were looking for a quiet, private site and there are very few of those."

Tips for camping with families

Check pool hours: Swimming facilities often close earlier than expected. One family noted, "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The setting is peaceful and convenient. Our site was right in the stock pond. It seems the campground is mostly full time residents which isn't bad. We wished there were more amenities as it's a Holiday site. The pool was nice and the hot tub."

Consider cabin size limitations: Most cabins accommodate 4-6 people comfortably. Larger families may need multiple units. One parent shared, "Gorgeous campground with a large lake and two ponds, a pool, putt putt, & tons of activities for kids! Retail cost is $60/night and totally worth it if you don't have a membership!"

Look for family-specific amenities: Some properties cater specifically to children. "Trash pickup, delivery ice! This is not the average campground. Concrete sites with a beautiful fishing pond. Really friendly staff. We have found our Conroe home away from home. Great for kids," reported one satisfied parent.

Tips from RVers

Campsite selection strategy: When staying in cabins at primarily RV parks, location matters significantly. An experienced camper shared, "We camped in site 31 which was nice for view and privacy but when rain came down, the soil from the above sites washed down hill."

Internet connectivity: Wifi service varies dramatically between properties. One camper noted, "I booked this site because it shows wifi as an amenity. However, the wifi is a pay-by-the-day only offer." If connectivity is important, confirm details before booking.

Winter considerations: Cabin camping remains viable year-round, but with seasonal differences. A winter visitor remarked, "This time of year, (Thanksgiving Week) Very quiet!" Winter visits offer solitude but may have limited recreational options.
