    Tyler State Park Campground

    Lots to do!

It being August in Texas, we rented a limited use cabin with air conditioning. It also has a mini frig and a microwave inside. It has a queen size bed for which campers need to bring their own pillows and bed linens. The frig was super cold, and the AC worked well. There was a wood table with four chairs. The table was really sticky, so I recommend bringing something you can use as a table cloth. There are only six of these cabins, and they have a four bathroom building at the end of the cul de sac. No tents or pets are allowed at the cabin sites. Each has fire pit and water outside cabin

The park has a very small lake with canoe, kayak, paddle board, row boat, and paddle boat rentals. Life vests are provided with rental. It was fun! There is a good sized swimming area too. There are a number of trails of varying difficulty, some for hiking only, some for home and bike. Ranger programs offered.

    The Boulders at Lake Tyler

    Perfect First Trip!

We brought our Springdale Mini by Keystone to The Boulders for our first ever camping trip and could not have had a better experience. The grounds were clean and well maintained. Concrete sites made setup and leveling super easy. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful - when we mentioned it was our first trip, they guided us into our site and gave us tips on setup. The waterfront views were beautiful and the amenities were wonderful. They had a variety of rentals available - golf carts, kayaks, and pontoon boats. They offer boat ramp and docks and a fishing barge. The bait shop has a variety of supplies and snacks. The bathrooms were very clean. They also have a nice playground. The picnic tables at the sites looked new and all sites had a fire pit with a grill top. Overall, a great trip!

Other info: 30&50 amp hookups Water hookup Dump site only ($15 for honey wagon) Pet allowed Firewood available for purchase Cabins available for your camperless friends

    Tyler State Park Campground

    One of our favorite parks

I should mention that my husband is from Canada. He was very unenthusiastic about camping in Texas. Well Tyler State Park made him change his mind! He LOVED the large trees, said it was the closest he'd felt to home in quite some time. We love the variety of types of sites they offer. Lake front, group, hike in, cabin, they have something for everyone! Only downfall is they book so quickly.

    Tyler State Park Campground

Great camping 2 hours from Dallas

I visited the Shortleaf camping area in the Tyler State Park for the weekend to participate in a 50k trail race. Each campsite in this area has a sheltered cabin, picnic table, fire pit and 2 parking spots. Tent camping is also permitted on the site but I used my iKamper Roof Top Tent as my primary place to sleep. The sheltered cabin has screens on the windows to keep the bugs out and electricity. I used this area primarily for storage of the food & gear that I used during the weekend. My campsite was located at the bottom of a hill and had a path to the restrooms and showers. These facilities were very clean and had 2 shower stalls and 3 toilet stalls along with 2 sinks. This location had access to the lake via a short hike. This type of camp site is the best of both worlds, you can camp via tent/car and still have a cabin like experience via the sheltered cabin.

In September it is still pretty warm in Tyler, humidity was 100% when I visited without rain. I'll visit again in October when the cooler temps arrive and undoubtable have an even better experience.

    Rusk KOA

    Great spot for the kiddos!

Super nice staff and full saturday breakfast (eggs/bacon/pancakes/coffee etc--extra fee, but very reasonable!)

Pool, jump pad, playground, trike rentals, Rock/gem mining slough, movies/events, etc.

Sites are level pull-through sites and most have a clear view of the playground, which gives the kids a sense of freedom.  They have cabins and cool teepees as well, but have only ever camped in RV here.

Have been camping here in the summers and both Easter & Halloween weekends and they do easter egg/candy hunts and have other events for the kids/kids at heart.

We love coming here and the staff are always very kind to us. (photos on this review are during the halloween event--we decorated our campsite lol)

    Big Tex Campgrounds

    Four Stars For Now

This is a new campground that is just getting up and running. The sites are all large and shaded with a picnic table and a fire pit. Our site was also a full hookup site as was the site of our friends that also came with us. They have a camp store and a laundry mat and a couple of small hiking trails. There are several other amenities coming. The only con is they will move you. I don’t care if you picked that spot out for a specific reason (as I did) when booking, it likely won’t be your spot when you check in. I find that annoying, but that’s literally the only con. The staff was nice, park clean, and shaded sites. I did not go to the restrooms (if they even have any) to tell you how those are.

    Rusk Depot Campground

    Family trip

First & foremost, This park is not well-maintained, and the camping sites are right off of the highway. The splash pad does not work, and the bath house was terribly dirty and freaked of sewage. The group sites are basically a big parking lot- zero grass space between site numbers, although there is shared grass areas along the rows. We moved site numbers within the group sites so that our kids would not be playing right beside the highway (there is a gate, however it’s still concerning), and to slightly distance ourselves from the traffic noise. Beware there is also a large wedding venue directly across the highway & our kids were woken to the sounds of fireworks at night on the weekend. There were large fire ant mounds all along the concrete, and we had to purchase fire ant killer ourselves, as well as deal with some broken glass & the trash can for our site that wasn’t emptied before our stay. I spoke with the staff member working in the office and all she could say was “i will let management know.”

As far as the good: we had 6 kids and 4 adults staying, so despite the concerns and annoyances, we still were able to relax enough and enjoy our break from the daily grind. The kids played outside all day- making walking sticks, fishing a lot, catching bugs (spotted some really neat moths, too), and making up games.

The best: the nearly-daily trains coming right through the campground for various reasons (loading new cars or taking passengers on a local trip). My son is an avid train-lover and this was the main reason we booked our stay here.

Guide to Neches

Campgrounds near Neches, Texas offer diverse recreational opportunities centered around water activities and family-oriented experiences. The area features primarily wooded sites with East Texas pine forests providing natural shade during hot summer months when temperatures often exceed 95°F. Seasonal considerations include high humidity from May through September and occasional flooding in spring months at waterfront locations.

What to do

Train watching: Rusk Depot Campground features regular train activity that delights younger visitors. A camper noted, "The best: the nearly-daily trains coming right through the campground for various reasons (loading new cars or taking passengers on a local trip). My son is an avid train-lover and this was the main reason we booked our stay here."

Kayaking opportunities: Tyler State Park Campground offers water recreation on its 64-acre lake. A visitor shared, "Pine forest and beautiful lake for swimming, paddel boarding (SUP), or fishing. Lots of hiking/mountain bike trails. Day use swimming area can get crowded on the weekends but there's plenty of quieter access points."

What campers like

Trail systems: Campers appreciate the hiking and biking trails available. One Tyler State Park visitor wrote, "Sites are good but trails for biking and hiking are great!!" Another added, "We love the trails and lake at this park. The playground is one of the best I've seen at the state parks we've been to!"

Water amenities: Water features rank highly among visitor favorites. A reviewer at Coal Mine Ranch RV Park stated, "There were some drawbacks to the sites, but the water area made it all worth it for us and our toddler! He had a BLAST. Nice clean gravel sites, though a little sandy & not a ton of shade. Full hookups, bath house, and a very nice little water park."

Concrete pads: The Boulders at Lake Tyler receives praise for site quality. One camper mentioned, "Although the sites were close together, they all had concrete pads, full hookups, were level, and had picnic tables. Great view of Lake Tyler. Also very clean."

Shade coverage: The tall pines provide welcome relief from summer heat. A camper at Rusk Depot Campground shared, "Took a chance on this campground because many reviews on various websites were bad and many were old... It is not the most maintained campground, but it is a small loop with pull-in sites w/ full hookups...we camped in october and It was very 'fall vibes' with all the super tall pine trees and we thought it was a hidden gem."

What you should know

Maintenance issues: Some campgrounds have reported maintenance concerns. At Rusk Depot Campground, a camper noted, "This park is not well-maintained, and the camping sites are right off of the highway. The splash pad does not work, and the bath house was terribly dirty and freaked of sewage."

Site spacing: Site proximity varies between glamping locations in Neches, Texas. One camper at Jellystone Park™ Tyler observed, "The camp sites were small, with full hookup's! We had a great time here with our family camping next to us and some friends rented a cabin, which was very nice!"

Bathroom facilities: Quality of bathroom facilities fluctuates between locations. A visitor to Coal Mine Ranch RV Park stated, "CLEAN BATHROOMS AND SHOWERS. Overall an amazing experience." However, another camper noted, "Bathrooms need to be cleaned more than once a week. Not a bad property, could be nice in the summer."

Site selection: At Oak Cove Marina, tent campers face weekend restrictions. A visitor reported, "My husband and I went to this site to scope it out for a weekend family camping trip. We drove all over the park and could not find a designated area for tents. We finally stopped at the restaurant/convenient store/bait shop and asked where are the tent sites. He asked when we wanted to stay and we gave him the dates. He then informed us they do not allow tents during the weekend."

Tips for camping with families

Water activities for children: Multiple locations offer water-focused recreation. A visitor to Coal Mine Ranch RV Park shared, "My kids are already asking when we are coming back. The owners and staff are super friendly. The water park kept my kids happy the entire weekend. Only drawback was not open past 5 pm but I understand why (they do private parties). Plenty activities for kids."

Family-oriented amenities: Big Tex Campgrounds provides facilities for family enjoyment. A visitor mentioned, "The sites are all large and shaded with a picnic table and a fire pit. Our site was also a full hookup site as was the site of our friends that also came with us. They have a camp store and a laundry mat and a couple of small hiking trails."

Tips from RVers

Electrical service: Power capabilities vary between glamping sites in Neches, Texas area. One reviewer at Rusk Depot Campground noted, "On our last night, the 30 amp breaker kept tripping without a full load. Happened twice within an hour so we scaled back our amp use under 20 just to have some heat during the night."

Site leveling: Terrain can affect RV setup at certain locations. A camper observed at Rusk Depot Campground, "Parking pad broken up by roots so very uneven surface. The firepit ring was mostly rusted away and was completely filled with ash so our fire was on the pi ash."

Road navigation: Some campgrounds present navigation challenges. A visitor mentioned about Rusk Depot Campground, "FHU loop roadway was difficult to maneuver due to the roadway being covered with pine needles which blended it into the non-roadway. We saw most people driving thru campsites thinking it was the road as the FHU loop were mostly pull-thru sites."

RV site amenities: Full-service sites are available at various locations. A visitor to Rusk KOA shared, "This campground really has no outside noise from anywhere. It is wonderfully quiet.
