    Tyler State Park Campground

    Lots to do!

It being August in Texas, we rented a limited use cabin with air conditioning. It also has a mini frig and a microwave inside. It has a queen size bed for which campers need to bring their own pillows and bed linens. The frig was super cold, and the AC worked well. There was a wood table with four chairs. The table was really sticky, so I recommend bringing something you can use as a table cloth. There are only six of these cabins, and they have a four bathroom building at the end of the cul de sac. No tents or pets are allowed at the cabin sites. Each has fire pit and water outside cabin

The park has a very small lake with canoe, kayak, paddle board, row boat, and paddle boat rentals. Life vests are provided with rental. It was fun! There is a good sized swimming area too. There are a number of trails of varying difficulty, some for hiking only, some for home and bike. Ranger programs offered.

    Salmon Lake Park & Resort

    Underrated & unique family fun!

We have camped at Salmon Lake many times. It is a favorite of the kiddos. The original owner was a house mover, so there are all kinds of old "western town" type setups..old jail, old barber shop, tons of old cars etc. It is fun just to walk around and look at them all. On some visits there is a train ride that runs, but not always. Some of the buildings are cabin rentals. We have never rented a cabin, only done RV camping, but the cabins look so neat!!

There is a playground by the lake and The lake is gorgeous and the kids like to swim in it. It has a giant slide for them and a swimming dock in the middle. It is like a step back in time to the simpler days, very no frills camping. We have brought dirt bikes and small atv before. Owners are ok if you bring them, just be respectful and don't tear anything up. The owners are great hosts and super nice.

All the spots are different (there are 100s of spots...they don't reserve spots. you just get there and then go pick one.)  There is a wooded section of sites behind the lake, but have never camped in that area. We usually pick a spot in the field near the big fire pit or tree. Most sites do not have fire pits or tables, but we usually find one near a fire pit or table with no problems. Be sure to check the sites before you unhook...some have full hookups, some have sketchy looking electric, but we just check everything before unhooking and use a surge protector.  We always look for full hookup sites and have never had a problem finding one way away from other campers. 10/10 one of our favorite campsites and a seriously underrated spot. We always say it feels like going back to a summer camp in the 70s-80s (in the best kind of way!!)

    Tyler State Park Campground

Nice place to get outdoors for a few days

This is kind of a homey/tourist sort of campground and park. There's kayak rentals available as well as boats. Campsites are available as well as small cabins. You can also rent bikes and other things. If you're looking for a "resort" style camping experience this may be for you.

    Tyler State Park Campground

Great camping 2 hours from Dallas

I visited the Shortleaf camping area in the Tyler State Park for the weekend to participate in a 50k trail race. Each campsite in this area has a sheltered cabin, picnic table, fire pit and 2 parking spots. Tent camping is also permitted on the site but I used my iKamper Roof Top Tent as my primary place to sleep. The sheltered cabin has screens on the windows to keep the bugs out and electricity. I used this area primarily for storage of the food & gear that I used during the weekend. My campsite was located at the bottom of a hill and had a path to the restrooms and showers. These facilities were very clean and had 2 shower stalls and 3 toilet stalls along with 2 sinks. This location had access to the lake via a short hike. This type of camp site is the best of both worlds, you can camp via tent/car and still have a cabin like experience via the sheltered cabin.

In September it is still pretty warm in Tyler, humidity was 100% when I visited without rain. I'll visit again in October when the cooler temps arrive and undoubtable have an even better experience.

    Fishermans Point Marina and Resort

    Limited tent sites

We went to check this place out to reserve for a family camp trip. The grounds are clean and spacious. They have wonderful cabins and RV sites. The only have 5 tent sites. There are no tent pads and the sites are on a small hill. The picnic tables are limited and not every tent site has one. There are no fire rings so it’s a little unnerving building a fire on the grass. The lake and marina is wonderful and clean. They have all sorts of thing to do there. Kayak rentals, fishing charters, a cute little cafe. This is a place I would come to rent a cabin but not to tent camp!

    Tyler State Park Campground

    Options Galore!

This is my favorite state park in Texas! Lots of options for all kinds of campers. For camping, lots of different sites available for RVs/Campers, Tents, etc. some along the lake, some in the woods, and also cabins and shelters available! Hiking options vary from a nature stroll, to some more serious up-downs through the hills on the outskirts of the campground. Bring your friends, family, and pets, there is truly something for everyone here, even kayak and canoe rentals at the lake!

    Tyler State Park Campground

    One of our favorite parks

I should mention that my husband is from Canada. He was very unenthusiastic about camping in Texas. Well Tyler State Park made him change his mind! He LOVED the large trees, said it was the closest he'd felt to home in quite some time. We love the variety of types of sites they offer. Lake front, group, hike in, cabin, they have something for everyone! Only downfall is they book so quickly.

Guide to Cuney

Cabin camping near Cuney, Texas provides visitors with wooded East Texas accommodations in the Piney Woods region. Most cabins in the area sit between 400-500 feet above sea level on rolling terrain characterized by tall pine forests and small lakes. Summer temperatures typically reach 90-100°F during peak season, making air-conditioned cabin options particularly valuable from June through September.

What to do

Fishing at multiple locations: Lake Hawkins County RV Park offers excellent fishing opportunities with a dedicated pier and boat dock. "The view of lake is wonderful, peaceful and huge spaces. Lots of places for kids to play or ride bikes," notes a camper who enjoyed the lakefront setting.

Water activities for hot days: Jellystone Park™ Tyler features extensive water amenities that provide relief from summer heat. "My kids loved the splash pad/water slides (I did too!). The bouncy pillow is always a fan favorite, and we spent just as much time there as we did in the water," mentions a visitor who appreciated the variety of recreation options.

Nature trails for all abilities: Tyler State Park Campground maintains multiple trail systems suitable for different skill levels. "Sites are good but trails for biking and hiking are great!!" shares one camper, while another notes, "Pine forest and beautiful lake for swimming, paddel boarding (SUP), or fishing. Lots of hiking/mountain bike trails."

What campers like

Shaded cabin sites: Many cabins in the area benefit from tree coverage that helps manage summer heat. At Shiloh on the Lake, a visitor appreciated that "This is a great, non-parking lot style campground. Every site is covered with trees, and though they are a bit close together you feel connected with nature."

Lake swimming access: Shiloh on the Lake maintains a designated swimming area with good water quality. "The swimming area is well marked and nice hard sand bottom. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here," reports a camper who visited during summer.

Concrete parking pads: Lake Hawkins features well-maintained concrete pads at cabin and RV sites, improving accessibility in wet conditions. "Concrete pads, lots of shade, many with views of the lake (very clear water for the area) great little campground store with necessities. Very spacious sites!!" writes one visitor.

What you should know

Reservation windows vary by location: Popular cabin sites book quickly, especially during summer and holiday periods. At Rusk KOA, cabins require planning ahead: "Hard to get reservations because it is so popular! If you get reservations it's kinda like winning the lottery. But it's all worth it!"

Campground entertainment schedules: Many locations offer organized activities on specific days. "Have been camping here in the summers and both Easter & Halloween weekends and they do easter egg/candy hunts and have other events for the kids/kids at heart," explains a Rusk KOA visitor.

Sand management challenges: Some cabin sites have sandy terrain that requires extra cleaning. At Shiloh on the Lake, a camper warned: "The sites are packed sand. We constantly fought with tracking sand in. When it rained it was a nightmare."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water features: The Fabulous Bok Vegas Texas offers unique attractions beyond standard camping. With an interactive petting zoo alongside cabin accommodations, this site combines animal experiences with camping, ideal for families with young children.

Playground accessibility: Several parks position cabin sites with good views of play areas. At Rusk KOA, "Sites are level pull-through sites and most have a clear view of the playground, which gives the kids a sense of freedom."

Check for special events: Tyler State Park regularly hosts family activities throughout the season. "My family and I enjoy the trails and lake at this park. The playground is one of the best I've seen at the state parks we've been to!" notes a visitor who appreciated the family amenities.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for length of stay: At The Trails at Lavender Road, site arrangement accommodates different camping styles. "Nice area to stay overnight or for few days. Plenty of room in pull through sites to keep toad hooked up behind 42' Tiffin Bus," reports one RVer, noting the convenience for brief stays.

Laundry facilities: When planning longer cabin or RV stays, check for on-site laundry access. "Did laundry and it had clean machines. Peaceful surroundings," mentions a camper at The Trails at Lavender Road, highlighting the practical amenities for extended stays.
