Hidden gem only two hours from Houston

This park is a great option for those looking for a spot not too far from Houston, but less busy than other parks such as Huntsville State Park, etc. that are a little closer to Houston. It’s also a nice option for those wanting to visit Big Thicket, but seeking a less primative camping experience (the Big Thicket National Preserve has primitive camping only).

Most of the campsites have enough trees to set up a hammock. If you get there while the office is open, they will give you the choice of picking your own campsite (of those still available).

Canoe and kayak rentals are dirt cheap. You might see an alligator while canoeing, but per the park workers they don’t bother people.

Bring bug spray! Especially in the hotter months.

Beautiful area near Cloudcroft, NM

It has dispersed camping that, depending on the site, may require a short walk. I did not actually camp here (wish I did!), but spent an afternoon at the campground. A beautiful area!

A peaceful west Texas escape with relatively cooler summer temps

I did not spend too much time here, as it was a stop to camp in the final stretch of a drive from New Mexico to Houston. I was pleasantly surprised to see clean bathroom facilities, less heat, wild deer, etc.

Good deal for families, solo travelers, and couples

The area is located between Zion and Grand Canyon North Rim. If coming from Fredonia (basically from Zion) you have about 6 miles of gravel road, but have 23 miles of gravel road between it and the North Rim. It’s not the smoothest gravel road I have been on, but I made it there going slowly in a sedan. I’d recommend a truck or SUV for the 23 mile gravel drive if possible.

you have to bring your own sheets and bathrooms and kitchen are in a shared area. A beautiful and peaceful place though!

Nice park, shaded with temps cooler than nearby Sedona

Very nice campround that is shaded (good for the summer) with a nearby spring. I would give it a higher rating if not for it being so near the road and having road noise that was not too bad but still wished there was less of it.

The campground is a very unique experience

The park is full of wild bison, creating an experience as unique as I have seen. Be warned that they are in the roads and come in and near the campsites. When I left for a hike, I came back and found bison poop on my campsite!
