Best Campgrounds near Camp Crook, SD

The Camp Crook area in South Dakota provides several remote camping options in the surrounding national forest and public lands. Picnic Spring Campground and Reva Gap Campground offer established sites within the Custer Gallatin National Forest, while Medicine Rocks State Park Campground provides a more developed camping experience about 45 miles northwest. Most campgrounds in this region accommodate tent camping, with some sites like Picnic Spring also supporting RVs and limited glamping options. Lantis Spring and Macnab Pond offer more primitive camping experiences for those seeking solitude in this sparsely populated corner of western South Dakota and eastern Montana.

Road conditions vary significantly throughout the region, with many campgrounds accessible via gravel roads that may require high-clearance vehicles during wet conditions. "This is one of the best National Forest campgrounds that we have been to. All of the 8 sites are very spread out and unique on their own," noted one visitor about Picnic Spring Campground. Cell service ranges from limited to nonexistent at most sites, with visitors reporting occasional service at higher elevations. Most campgrounds in the area are free or low-cost, with stay limits typically around 14 days. Weather conditions can change rapidly, with summer thunderstorms common and winter access limited by snow. Campers should bring their own water, as potable water is scarce at most locations.

The camping experience near Camp Crook emphasizes solitude and natural beauty rather than amenities. Several visitors highlighted the privacy between campsites at locations like Reva Gap and Picnic Spring. One camper remarked, "Very quiet campground! There looks to be about 10 official spots with gravel back-ins. The official spots have a metal fire ring and picnic table." Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with deer and elk sightings common throughout the region. Most campgrounds feature basic vault toilets but lack running water or electrical hookups. The geological formations surrounding many of these campgrounds, particularly at Medicine Rocks State Park and in the Slim Buttes area near Reva Gap, provide distinctive scenery and hiking opportunities. Stargazing is exceptional due to minimal light pollution in this remote region.

    Picnic Spring Campground

    Picnic spring

Arrived around 2:00 pm on a Tuesday. There are 2 other campers here. One is a big rig and the other is a 5th wheel. I think they are hunters, not sure. It was over 6 miles down a dirt gravel road. The road was fairly nice. We have a great site for our 23ft trailer. This campground is so private and the sites are spaced far enough away you can’t see each other. We are only staying one night. I would definitely stay longer here if we weren’t in our way to Theodore Roosevelt NP.

    Lantis Spring Campground

    Beautiful and easy free camping

Great free campground! No electric or water, but a spring nearby for filtering water, established fire rings, and a very clean pit toilet. There’s ample space for spreading out and several shaded picnic tables. There’s a few groves of trees for shade and hammocks and while my group managed to find spots that stayed shaded all day, some of the sites are very sunny. The roads in were gravel but well maintained, didn’t even have to put my vehicle into 4WD. I had 1 bar of cell service in the campground that came and went but strong service at the top of hill before entering the campground and at the nearby fire look out. Stayed here 4 nights in late June and only had 1 overnight camp neighbor and a couple of day-use neighbors. You may even have some cow neighbors if you’re lucky. Very beautiful scenery, would stay again :)

    Picnic Spring Campground

    A Hidden Gem!!!!

My son and I were antelope hunting near here last September and found this campground. We were not able to stay because we had a dog that needed to stay in the camper which required full hookup. For that we went in to Buffalo South Dakota and stayed at the campground there. I knew I'd make it back someday and we were on our way home from the Black hills to Sidney Montana and I remembered this place as we were passing by. We came up here with high expectations and all of our expectations were Met. Quiet, beautiful sunset. Plenty of room firewood at every site. Good internet service phone service on Verizon and T-Mobile and AT&T. This place is a grand slam for anybody that wants a great place to stay for free. Thank you USDA for all the hard work.

    Medicine Rocks State Park Campground

Couple of nights under the stars

We spent a couple of nights in our 22’ trailer over July 4th weekend. We were very lucky to find one site left. Very basic sites and a little uneven so you will want blocks to level up. There is water at the gate but it’s a hand pump with no way of attaching a hose to fill a camper so I would bring water. Lovely spot if you want peace and tranquility, that sky at night is something else!

    Picnic Spring Campground

    Lovely and peaceful

Free campground in SD, not WY. Most sites are well separated. Most have picnic tables. Came over 4th of July and there were only 5 other campers when I left. Several piles of wood available for firewood (resulted from clearing trees); you will need to split it, however. Sites has been mowed for fire mitigation which also resulted in nice "lawns". I stayed in 1st on the right. It was more exposed to wind and rain, but I preferred the layout. Other sites are more protected.

    Reva Gap Campground

    Neat formations

Free camping in Custer Gallatin NF. No water, no trash collection. Many sites are really private with long driveways. Not all had tables and/or fire pits. Only a couple other campers there. Good views of The Castle which is part of Slim Buttes. Bathrooms needed some attention. Lots of flies. There is a map of campsites at entry off of SD20.

Guide to Camp Crook

Camping sites near Camp Crook, South Dakota sit in the northwestern corner of the state, where the rolling prairie meets the ponderosa pine forests of the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Summer temperatures typically range from 50-90°F with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, while fall brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Most camping areas sit at elevations between 3,000-4,000 feet, creating significant temperature drops after sunset even in summer months.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Macnab Pond Campground, visitors can fish in a spring-fed pond that's wheelchair accessible. "Nice little spring feed pond, Ada accessible," reports one camper who enjoyed the serene setting.

Rock exploration: The sandstone formations at Medicine Rocks State Park Campground provide natural playgrounds for children and adults alike. A visitor noted, "The rocks are fascinating, the sites are shaded and quiet. We were hoping for good stargazing, but it was too cloudy—the night sky is very dark, though, so I'm sure it would be breathtaking on a clear night."

Hiking trails: Several primitive trails wind through the Slim Buttes area near Reva Gap Campground. "A not difficult path leads you upward to a beautiful view of The Castles formation in the Slim Buttes," writes one camper who visited during summer. Many trails are unmarked but allow access to spectacular viewpoints of the surrounding prairie.

What campers like

Separation between sites: At Picnic Spring Campground, the layout provides exceptional privacy. One camper remarked, "We have a great site for our 23ft trailer. This campground is so private and the sites are spaced far enough away you can't see each other." Another visitor mentioned arriving on a Tuesday afternoon to find only two other campers there.

Dark skies for astronomy: The remote location of Camp Crook camping areas means minimal light pollution. A camper at Medicine Rocks State Park noted the "sky at night is something else!" Many sites throughout the area offer unobstructed views of the night sky, particularly during new moon phases.

Abundant wildlife: Reva Gap Campground provides opportunities to observe native species. "Coyotes serenaded us throughout the night!" reported one visitor. Deer sightings are common at dawn and dusk, with many campers reporting close encounters from their sites.

What you should know

Water availability: Most camping areas require you bring your own water or have a plan to filter/treat natural sources. At Medicine Rocks State Park, "There is water at the gate but it's a hand pump with no way of attaching a hose to fill a camper so I would bring water."

Road conditions: Many camping areas require travel on unpaved roads. For Picnic Spring Campground, "It was over 6 miles down a dirt gravel road. The road was fairly nice." However, conditions can deteriorate quickly after rain.

Limited services: Lantis Spring Campground offers basic facilities with no hookups. A camper noted, "No electric or water, but a spring nearby for filtering water, established fire rings, and a very clean pit toilet." Most sites throughout the region have similar limitations.

Cell coverage: Reception varies dramatically between locations and providers. At Lantis Spring, "I had 1 bar of cell service in the campground that came and went but strong service at the top of hill before entering the campground and at the nearby fire look out."

Tips for camping with families

Pack plenty of water: With limited water sources, families should bring 1-2 gallons per person per day. One visitor to Picnic Spring Campground warned, "Note the nearest groceries or any store for that matter is 25 miles away in either direction on Route 85."

Plan for temperature swings: The high desert climate means hot days and cool nights. Layered clothing is essential, especially in spring and fall when overnight temperatures can drop below freezing.

Bring your own entertainment: North Shore Bowman Haley Lake offers lake activities, but swimming may be restricted. "Don't count on swimming in Bowman Haley Lake, signs posted stating the water may contain blue green algae that can be harmful to humans and pets," warns one visitor.

Watch for small hazards: One camper cautioned, "Beware, if you are traveling with pets, there are small cactus throughout the grasslands and ticks." These same hazards apply to children playing in undeveloped areas.

Tips from RVers

Limited leveling options: Many sites require blocks for stabilization. A camper at Medicine Rocks State Park advised, "Very basic sites and a little uneven so you will want blocks to level up."

Water filling challenges: RVers should arrive with full tanks. "There is water at the gate but it's a hand pump with no way of attaching a hose to fill a camper," noted one RVer at Medicine Rocks State Park.

Site selection timing: For the best spots, mid-week arrivals are recommended. "I made the trip from Medora on a Tuesday morning and I arrived around noon. I gambled that the people who came in for the weekend would be gone and the ones who were coming for the next weekend would not be there for another day or two," shared a strategic camper at Picnic Spring Campground.
