    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Cane Creek Park provides equestrian enthusiasts with extensive riding trails integrated throughout the 1,050-acre property. The trail system accommodates both day riders and overnight campers, with paths that wind around the lake and through wooded areas. Equestrian facilities include designated horse-friendly campsites with ample space for trailer parking. The campground maintains trails that are suitable for various skill levels, from beginner to experienced riders. Bathhouses remain clean and well-maintained, providing convenient amenities after a day of riding. The park's location outside of Waxhaw makes it accessible for riders traveling from Charlotte and surrounding areas, offering a convenient equestrian getaway. The equestrian trails occasionally cross hiking paths, requiring riders to maintain awareness of other park visitors.

Trail access begins directly from the camping areas, eliminating the need to transport horses after arrival. Riders frequently encounter well-marked paths that provide clear directional guidance throughout the network. Water access points along the trails allow horses to drink and cool off during warmer months. The terrain varies from flat, easy stretches to more challenging wooded sections with moderate inclines. Most equestrian sites accommodate both horse trailers and camping vehicles, with sufficient space for setup. Union County regulations require proof of negative Coggins test and adherence to clean-up protocols in camping areas. The park's trail system connects to other equestrian paths in the region, allowing for extended riding options. Seasonal conditions can affect trail quality, with some areas becoming muddy after heavy rainfall.

Woods Ferry Campground (Sc) — Francis Marion And Sumter National Forests

      Secluded Campground in National Forest

It was difficult for me to find Woods Ferry, but after talking with a park official, I finally got there. It is off the beaten path, so it is quiet. Apparently, there had been a lot of rain recently, and the area showed it. Woods Ferry is a campground mainly for campers who have horses. There are corrals at many of the campsites, so there are also a lot of horseflies. Horseflies and the actual site itself are my two main concerns. Selecting my campsite was my mistake. It was sloped, but there are a few others that were not sloped. There is running water and a pit toilet. Otherwise, you will have to take everything else in that you need.

Since South Carolina is hot during this time of year, I was a bit uncomfortable, especially since I was on a slope.

There is a separate section for group camping. However, I think it caters to groups of horse campers, as there are corrals at the campsites.

Overall, it’s not too bad for those who camp in an RV or a travel trailer, but it’s not ideal for tent campers.

Kings Mountain — Kings Mountain State Park

      Nice quiet state park

This is a very nice state park. The sites are well spaced and wooded. (If you think they are too close together you haven’t been to many private campgrounds). Our site was level and spacious, although some were not as level. Our first site had an awkward incline. The guy at the trading post said they were working on them. We were there mid-week and the campground was very quiet. The only noise was from crows and other birds, and acorns falling in the woods. There is electric (some 50 amp) and water but no sewer. There are 2 dump stations. Several bathrooms/showers are available. There is a nice playground, hiking trails, a lake, canoe rental, and a trading post with some food, ice, camping supplies, firewood and souvenirs. There is also a separate Equestrian campground! The stare park is adjacent to Kings Mountain National Battlefield Park, with Revolutionary War history and more hiking.

      Cane Creek Park

A Great Place for the Whole Family.

Located just outside historic Waxhaw NC, Cane Creek is part of the NC Soil Conservative Sites. They offer day passes,$4.00 per car where you can launch you kayak canoe or fishing boat. If you like Bass Fishing, they rank as one of the best spots around. They have swimming areas for both day users and one for campers. This really is a gem within Union Co NC. The campground is on the other side of the lake. They have camping for RV’s, Cabin Rentals and tent sites for either large groups or individuals. The hiking trail is beautiful and takes you around the whole lake. Watch for horses, as this is a great place for riders too.

      Cane Creek Park

      Nice county park!

Always a great getaway from the bustle of city life. Day use area can be packed in the summer but they have plenty of rules to keep the park beautiful and orderly. The camping side has scattered tent and group sights with some large wooded RV sights and clean cabins. Bath house is very well kept too. Fishing is typically outstanding for bass, cats, crappie, and carp. Equestrian trails are everywhere and are good for hiking, a few trails are a bit rough for bicycles though

Kings Mountain — Kings Mountain State Park

      A little disappointed

I expected a little more from this campground. The reviews I read made me think they had a lot to offer, but not so much. Stayed here April, 2018 for a week with my grandson. We were very disappointed to hear that they had kayaks, but weren't renting them out yet, due to not having a rack built for them yet. I assume so they couldn't lock them up. I thought they rented horses, but I misread the info..they had horse trails if you brought your own horse. The campsites are extrememly close together. The trails were nice. The camp store wasn't stocked the way you'd think it should be. I probably won't visit this campground again.

Kings Mountain — Kings Mountain State Park

Better than expected changes to very disappointing

Long weekend stay at site #42. Nice level and large site. Some sites are smaller and closer but our site and those on both sides of us were large and level. Bathhouse by our site was kept clean and stocked well. Small lake for fishing and they rent canoes and kayaks. Lots of trails. Equestrian camping area on the other side which we had no reason to visit.
Update to this review ... second visit this time site 41 which again was a large site. Unfortunately we had a severe storm second night there, our side had no damage but there were trees down all over the rest of the park. Lost our electricity which means we lost water. They locked all of the restrooms because of this and didn’t bother putting up any signs or provide any alternative for those who were in tents, which there was a significant amount of people. since it was Memorial Day weekend the park was full. We had our bathroom in our trailer and water in our holding tank but we felt bad for the people in pop ups and tents. Still had no electricity the next day and still no bathrooms so we decided to call the electric company and was told the address of the park was never logged as having outage! Seriously?!!! Electric company sent workers out and later that day electricity was restored. This park is poorly managed, it should not take a call from a camper to the electric company. Following day they locked one of the bathrooms again because of a broken toilet until they could get it fixed, I understand that, but again no sign was posted ... just a locked door. Overall we were very disappointed with the way the rangers handled things and won’t be going back any time soon.

      Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort

      Charlotte Convienance

We were passing through for a trade show and picked the spot as it was 15 min from our event. Great place. Clean, well designed and maintained. The adjacent amusement park is closed due to Covid but i bet it is a blast to stay here when it is open. Wooded perimeter so you feel you are away from the city. Drawbacks: very few- we were invaded by ants but they came and went( could happen anywhere), the roads between the sites we a bit tight- it did not effect us as the park was not full but it could be a problem in peak season.

Kings Mountain — Kings Mountain State Park

      Overall a Good Experience

Took the new pop-up to Kings Mountain State Park this past weekend and had a great time. The sites are pretty close together, but we still had adequate room to spread out. Each site has water, 30 amp electric, a picnic table, and a fire pit ring. Our site was a pull-through, but the majority of them are back-in. Throughout the campground, AT&T had great cell coverage, but Verizon was non-existent. Our site was a stone's throw from the bath/shower house, which was clean and recently updated. When not in the side, a short walk takes you to the Trading Post, a small store selling firewood ($7), ice, souvenirs, and sundries. Next to that is a large playground connected to a pavilion. A short 2 minute drive (or longer hike if you are feeling ambitious) takes you to the Kings Mountain Military Museum where you can learn of all things historical to Kings Mountain. There's a small model village and numerous other attractions to view while at the park as well. Overall this was a great experience. It's close to home for us, and the price was fantastic ($30 nightly). Let me know if you have any other questions!

    What you should know

Site limitations: Many campgrounds near Catawba have challenging terrain for certain camping setups. Richard E. warns about Kings Mountain State Park: "Many camping sites are very much in need of leveling. Sites slope from left to right, front to back, and some slope in both ways."

Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts trail conditions significantly in this region. Myron C. notes at Woods Ferry Campground, "Apparently, there had been a lot of rain recently, and the area showed it," highlighting the need to check conditions before arrival.

Alcohol restrictions: Some parks enforce strict alcohol policies. Julie P. mentions that at Cane Creek Park, "No alcohol permitted," which differs from other nearby campgrounds.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Cane Creek Park schedules special events during peak periods. Sarah B. shares, "Holidays usually have some activities for kids. The mini golf is free and a blast."

Accessible trails: Select trails appropriate for younger riders when equestrian camping with children. The hike to the top was a little strenuous for smaller kids."

Swimming options: Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort provides additional water recreation for families. Von B. describes it as "Private but great for families and bike ridding. Private pool game room. Laundry and camp store."

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds enforce quiet hours strictly. Nate G. mentions, "They enforce the rules really well so quiet time is actually just that," making Carowinds Camp Wilderness suitable for families needing consistent sleep schedules.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose level sites for RV camping near equestrian trails. Karen S. cautions about Kings Mountain State Park: "The campsites themselves are very unlevel and laid out very awkwardly. The electric and water are in odd spots on each site."

Road access: Consider campground road conditions when traveling with larger rigs. Karen S. also notes, "The road into the campground is narrow, hilly and windy. We were able to do it in our 32 foot class A, but luckily no one was coming the other direction."

Hookup availability: Most equestrian campgrounds offer varying levels of RV services. Robert D. says of Cane Creek Park, "The campground is clean and well-maintained. The bathhouse is in good shape and clean," making it suitable for both horse trailers and RVs.

Weather impacts: Prepare for potential power interruptions during storms. Jeanette M. shares about Cane Creek Park, "Only problem is that both times we visited there was a storm and power went out for hours. Can't really do anything about that!"
