    Black Moshannon State Park Campground

    Family fun!

Nice clean and quiet campground. The address online took us to the ranger station. Turn left BEFORE bridge. Couldn’t see sign from the road. The section we were in was “no pets allowed”. My kids loved the beach, swimming was not deep. Beach was big with adjacent playground. Lots of pavilions all over. The area was a little crowded for my liking.

    Austin Campground

    Tucked Away Gem

Found this location while going to Elk State Forest for the elk bugling. Was very happy to find this location. Had clean bathrooms with running water and showers. Campground was tucked away between two mountains and sat next to a creek. Staff was friendly. Plenty of camp sites. Have yearly campsites which is apparent since some of the campers have more permanent structures around or attached to them. Pets allowed. Not the best place for hammock camping but have a few sites with good trees. Out of the main path but nice place to stay.

Russell P Letterman Campground — Bald Eagle State Park

    Relaxing week great sites

Stayed in the modern camping section. Easy access to camp ground. The check in process was just to drive to the site and set up which was different but very easy. The sites are private on the sides with some green space to play on. Lots of extra places to park extra cars or bring a second vehicle with a boat.

The kids had fun riding the bikes around the loop and taking the short cuts cut in around the loop. We had fun walking to the foot bridge to go fishing.

The camping area was very quite both mornings and evenings. We saw the park rangers drive through multiple times per day.

The bathrooms were clean. There are no shelfs in the showers (except for a bar of soap) but they had hooks to hang your clothes.

The racoons were a fun surprise on our last night! We left the grease trap from the Blackstone out and the they found it. We did not see any bears though we heard they are there.

We had smoke from Canadian forest fires so haze in the pictures is smoke not haze or rainy days! The walking trails are great. You can see the largest white swamp oak in Pennsylvania!

Definitely check out Penns Cave too.

    Pettecote Junction Campground

    Soul Cleansing

Petticoat Junction campground is nestled in the PA Grand Canyon with Pine Creek on one side and the Rails to Trails on the other of the campground. This ideal location provides a nice tranquil environment with opportunities for active adventures. It had been several years since our last stay at PJC, but the new owners have done amazing improvements and upgrades to many areas of the campground which are greatly appreciated. Everyone we interacted with(owners/employees) were friendly and gave us the feeling that they were glad we chose to stay with them.

There are a variety of camping options from season sites, primitive sites, cabins, glamping tents, and RV hook-ups for water and electric(along the creek). We stated in one of the water/electric hook-up sites along the creek, which was wonderful. Very flat and larger than average in size, which was nice not being on top of your neighbor. Water pressure was very good and the WIFI signal was better than many campgrounds we have stayed.

The location of PJC is perfect for fishing, floating/kayaking, and biking/hiking the rails to trail. There are many nearby hikes throughout the canyon for the more adventures travelers. The office has biking/tubing/boating rentals for its campers. Additionally the firewood for sale is priced well and is very good quality, not the cheap smoky pine found in most places. If you need a break from civilization to reset and relax, I highly recommend PJC!

    Seven Points (PA)

Favorite PA campground — the view !!!

Love staying at Seven Points CG.  This Corps part got a spruce up in 2022.  The roads on the point loop were upgraded.

Tough to get waterfront spot during main season, but fall is beautiful here.

Chipmunks are fun to watch.  Point loop is my favorite. Sites 128, 126 126a, 154 are perfect.  Easy access to the lake from your site.  Bath house is up at the top of the hill.  Be prepared for that walk.

Get water at the dump station on the way in!!! Easier than trying to attach to the spigots on the loop.

Trough State Park nearby is a great place to hike!!

    Happy Acres Resort

    Nice Camp in the Mountains

We tent camped and they had openings on Memorial Day weekend. The weather turned out to be bad for camping but management was very accommodating with our requests to change dates and spots. Unlike many campgrounds that cater primarily to campers/RVs, they have nice spots in wooded areas for tenters. Some even have water and electric hookups. There was a decent playground area but the bathrooms could use a remodel. Our spot had a nice soft, flat spot for our tent but was a little cramped (they did have larger spots) and it would be nice to have a grill attached to the fire pit. The camp ground fire wood was kiln dried but cost $15 for a bag that lasted less than a day (and we used it pretty sparingly) so I would suggest buying wood nearby where it can be found much cheaper (please don't transport wood from far away as this contributes to the spread of invasive species like the spotted lanternfly). The proximity to Little Pine State Park was nice.

    Black Moshannon State Park Campground

    No cell, no problem!

General: 73-site campground; most have electric hookups, and some are FHU. Pets are only permitted at selected sites. There are also 20 (13 rustic and 6 modern) cabins. Cell service is extremely limited to non-existent (Verizon).

Site Quality: Pads are gravel and most appeared to be level. Site 70 was at the end of the loop which is why we picked it. A picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook complete each site.

Bathhouse: As has been our experience in all PA state parks, the bathhouse was pristine, and the shower (for no additional cost) was clean with plentiful hot water and was very much appreciated.

Activities/Amenities: Coin-operated laundry. A playground is in the campground and there is an additional one at the swimming beach. The swimming beach is open from mid-May to mid-September, from 8 am– sunset. Electric motorboats are permitted on Moshannon Lake. Boat rentals are available in season. Permits are required. 24 miles of hiking trails, including two trails directly from the campground to the lake. In the summer, there is a camper store/concession stand. Hunting is allowed in season. There are 4.3 miles of mountain biking trails.

I used to think Oregon State Parks were the best, but Pennsylvania State Parks have them beat by a mile. We have yet to be disappointed by the amenities(especially the clean bathrooms) offered at the half-dozen state parks we have visited so far.

Guide to Snow Shoe

Black Moshannon State Park area offers extensive camping opportunities within the Bald Eagle State Forest near Snow Shoe, Pennsylvania. Located at elevations around 2,000 feet, the region's Allegheny Plateau geography creates a cooler microclimate than surrounding valleys. Tent sites, RV hookups, and glamping options around Snow Shoe typically require reservations from April through October, with many sites booking up 3-4 months in advance during summer weekends.

What to do

Wildlife watching opportunities: The Pennsylvania Wilds region surrounding Snow Shoe provides exceptional opportunities to observe native species. At Sinnemahoning State Park Campground, visitors often encounter elk in unexpected places. "I had a close encounter with a massive bull elk just walking from my campsite to the restrooms at dawn!" reports John V. The park's visitor center enhances wildlife education with "many participatory A/V camping and wildlife exhibits" according to David B.

Fishing access: Multiple stocked waterways around Snow Shoe maintain healthy fish populations for anglers. At Little Pine State Park Campground, campers have convenient creek access. "We were in site 108 and had a site path right to the creek," notes Jolene J. Sites near Waterville are particularly productive for trout fishing, as Sadie S. confirms: "There's plenty of Trout fishing opportunities. If you enjoy boating the dam is beautiful."

Mountain biking trails: The Snow Shoe region features well-maintained single track trails for cyclists. At Seven Points Campground, "The mtb trails begin just above the upper camp loops and provide a full day of fast flowing singletrack," according to Travis S. The area offers extensive connected trail systems, with one camper noting: "Lots of great hiking, footpath around the park layered with recycled rubber was great to walk on."

What campers like

Historical attractions: Several campgrounds near Snow Shoe preserve important industrial heritage sites. Greenwood Furnace State Park Campground features restored iron-making facilities. "Very interesting history of the old furnaces. Gorgeous park - very PA-scenic!" shares Melanie Z. The educational value extends to interactive demonstrations as Amanda H. notes: "The blacksmith shop was very educational!"

Dark skies: The region's limited light pollution creates exceptional stargazing conditions. Ann P. reports from Greenwood Furnace: "We saw the Milky Way!" Similarly, at Poe Paddy State Park, John V. appreciates "a quiet getaway" with "cell service is non-existent," perfect conditions for astronomy enthusiasts.

Boat access: Many campsites offer direct water access for various watercraft. At Buttonwood Campground, "Large grassy sites right on the Juniata River. Tubing, canoeing, swimming," according to Darcy S. The riverside camping experience adds value as Craig F. describes: "Our site was along the river, which provided us with a great view."

What you should know

Site selection considerations: Campgrounds near Snow Shoe often feature varied terrain requiring careful site selection. At Russell P Letterman Campground, Danielle S. advises: "Definitely look at pictures of your site before reserving. Our site had a blacktop driveway, a very small amount of gravel, and a ton of mud. There was standing water toward the back of our site, and no really solid place to pitch our tent."

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience periodic train noise. At Buttonwood Campground, one reviewer notes: "There is a train track across the river and you will hear them go by, but most of the time I really didn't notice them."

Limited connectivity: Cell service ranges from spotty to nonexistent at most campgrounds. At Poe Paddy State Park, Joanna H. cautions: "There is NO cell service and park rangers do 'rounds' but aren't stationed at the site." Similarly, David B. confirms "I had no verizon cell service in the park" at Sinnemahoning.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas for children. At Centre County Snow Shoe City Park, Paul Y. notes the "nice play ground for kids." Russell P Letterman Campground at Bald Eagle State Park features "a playground near the sites at the entrance" according to Travis S.

Educational programs: Several parks offer structured educational activities. Sinnemahoning State Park offers "a free pontoon boat tour of the lake, reservations needed because spots fill up fast!" according to Amber N., who adds: "During the fall at the nearby dam rangers set up an elk viewing spot with binoculars."

Swimming options: Many camping areas include designated swimming areas suitable for children. At Prince Gallitzin State Park, Jackie W. appreciates that it "has a beach on the lake. Affordable boat rentals. Bmx track for kids." Little Pine State Park offers "swimming at the beach up the road," though Jolene J. notes "(to get to both places you'll need to drive)."

Tips from RVers

Dump station quality: Seven Points receives high marks for efficient services. Tim J. reports: "We visited the dump station again and got in one of the 4 lanes with no wait. The dump station had wide lanes and made the experience an easy and clean one."

Electrical service: Most Snow Shoe area campgrounds offer electrical hookups, but water connections vary. At Buttonwood Campground, Jason H. notes: "Most sites have electric water and cable hookup." At Little Pine, James P. advises: "Electric only but water fill up is in convenient locations. Dump station is provided."

Site leveling considerations: The mountainous terrain creates challenges for larger rigs. At Seven Points, Tim J. was pleasantly surprised: "One backup attempt into the site and (according to our LevelMatePRO app) it was perfectly level...that was definitely a first for us." When glamping in Snow Shoe, Pennsylvania with an RV, advanced reservations are essential as James P. from Little Pine notes: "Very affordable camp rates."
