About
National Forest
Public lands of the Roseburg District, located in southwestern Oregon, contain some of the most productive forests in the world, including dense stands of Douglas-fir, hemlock, and cedar. The district is crisscrossed with streams and rivers that support sport fishing and contribute to anadromous (sea run) fish stocks vital to commercial fishing. An important mainstay of the local economy is the wood products industry, which acquires timber from both private and federal lands in the region. With Interstate 5 running through the middle of the district, and east-west state highways connecting Crater Lake to the Pacific coast, the Roseburg District draws many tourists to its scenic and recreation attractions.

Quiet, secluded, but easily accessible
Among the trees on a dirt road off the highway not far from crater lake. One large lot that had several RVs parked when we went and a few small slots among the trees a bit further up the road.
No amenities —just a nice spot among the trees.
Did find a butchered deer abandoned in the back of our spot in the morning but would still recommend.
Thought we were at the end of the road (passed the big lot, and another slot before pulling into our slot) but truck drove past us in the morning and didn’t come back so there must be more to see further down.
No cell service - excellent dark spot for stargazing.
Dispersed Camping Area with Several Options
There are several little camping spots here in this area, with one large open space right off hwy 62. We stayed in the open area near the road, as our 26ft motorhome would have been too big and bulky for the spots further in. The roads were narrow, with low overhanging branches as well as lots of fallen branches laying in the road. A car or a van could go back there easily, but not us.
The road leads from Hwy 62 to the Union Creek Trailhead, which has a nice sized parking area. There are several spots around here where people have flattened out a space in the trees, and they are marked by stone fire pits. We photographed a few of them, will include in this review.
Being a forest service dispersed camping area, there are of course zero amenities here, but shockingly there was zero garbage. What a nice surprise!
Zero cell service anywhere in this area. The visitor center at Crater Lake does have free good wifi.
Crater Lake had so much snow on the ground, and all the hiking trails were closed. But this spot is lower enough in elevation that it wasn't too cold, and only a small patch of snow on the ground.
Since it's directly off the hwy you do hear road noise, but traffic was very light this time of year, and almost completely silent overnight. This was a nice and peaceful spot, very beautiful and serene. Great place to stay if you're going to Crater Lake.
