Howard Creek Horse Camp provides equestrian camping near Jefferson, Oregon with a trail network suited for various experience levels. The camp is located within Silver Falls State Park's temperate rainforest ecosystem at an elevation of approximately 1,300 feet. The terrain includes varied topography with moderate hills that can challenge both horses and riders during seasonal wet conditions.
What to do
Trail riding with varying difficulty: Howard Creek Horse Camp connects directly to Silver Falls State Park's extensive trail system. "Sites are big and private. Very quite and tons of near empty trails even with a full campground on a weekend in the summer. Walking, bike, and horse trails," notes Jennifer H. about Howard Creek Horse Camp.
Waterfall viewing: The nearby hiking trails provide access to the park's famous waterfalls. "First and foremost, it's all about the waterfalls - all 10 of them - linked by paved hiking trails. Not a fan of sharing the trail with hikers when on your bike? There are miles of mountain bike trails. Have horses? They have trails too," explains Sherrie B.
Fishing opportunities: The surrounding area offers fishing options for campers looking to supplement their activities. At Hult Pond, Sean P. advises: "Fishing from shore is not advised; at least from my camp site. There's a large tree that runs out into the water which looks like a great place to fish but as you walk to the end of the log you'll see fishing lines all over. A paddle boat or kayak is best; no motorized boats allowed."
What campers like
Secluded camping spots: Many equestrian campers appreciate the privacy offered at the sites. "Stunning camping in a temperate rainforest. Sites are big and private. Very quite and tons of near empty trails even with a full campground on a weekend in the summer," reports Jennifer H.
Horse-friendly environment: Willamette Mission State Park Horse Camp provides another equestrian camping option. "I had a great weekend at Willamette Mission State Park Horse Camp! The campsites are horse friendly and the trails are absolutely gorgeous- it felt like being out in the wild," shares Sprunki R.
Year-round accessibility: Silver Falls State Park Campground remains open throughout the year. "Awesome campground. Well maintained. Site spacing is good with lots of privacy between camps. Bathrooms and showers are super nice and clean. Roads and campsites are paved and level. Short drive or hike to the falls," describes Richard H. about Silver Falls State Park Campground.
What you should know
Seasonal flooding: Be aware of potential weather-related access issues in certain parks. Kelly N. warns about Willamette Mission State Park: "This park floods every winter. I advise planning your trip for the spring or summer knowing that there is a lot of shaded trails to keep you cool. Mosquitoes can be a problem at dusk because of the water."
Limited horse facilities: Bring appropriate restraint equipment when camping with horses, as not all equestrian camps have corrals. Jefferson S. notes about Willamette Mission: "This State Park has a hiker/biker area due to it's location on the Willamette Valley Bikeway. There is no potable water, so you must plan to pack enough water for the night and the next morning or filter Willamette River water. There is also a campground for horseback riders specifically for those who want to ride their horses in the park."
Bug activity in summer months: Insect repellent is necessary during warmer seasons. At Hult Pond, Dillon & Soren A. report: "We have a 38 foot rv. We got stuck in a ditch. Rv almost tipped over trying to u turn… if you go down the main lower path you will find a area big enough to u turn! Dont do it until then! Other wise a wonderful time. So many many many bugs though at the area we stayed at."
Tips for camping with families
Choose sites near playground areas: Some campsites at Silver Falls are more family-friendly than others. Melissa L. suggests: "I'd try to reserve spots 9 or 12 (next to the playground and sunny spots) or 72 (next to the creek in the shade) next time!"
Pack for wet conditions: The climate in this area can be damp, especially around waterfalls. "THE most beautiful park in Oregon that we've seen! Hiked for 5 hours! BEWARE: It's WET, so bring your wet weather gear, and good, sturdy hiking shoes for slippery terrain," advises Melissa L. about Silver Falls.
Be prepared for no cell service: Polk County Fairgrounds provides a more connected alternative for families needing to stay in touch. "Huge gravel lot with RV hookups, no sewer connection but there is an on-site dump station so that's covered," notes Casey P. Meanwhile, at Hult Pond, Grace A. warns: "We lost cell service about an hour before we even got there, and didn't have any the whole time there."
Tips from RVers
Limited maneuvering space: Large RVs may face challenges at some equestrian camping areas. "We have a 38 foot rv. We got stuck in a ditch. Rv almost tipped over trying to u turn… if you go down the main lower path you will find a area big enough to u turn! Dont do it until then!" cautions Dillon & Soren A. about Hult Pond.
Alternative non-horse camping options: For RVers not traveling with horses, Polk County Fairgrounds offers more straightforward accommodations. Theresa R. shares: "We stayed here for seven nights and we do it again! Electricity 30 amp and water at the post. Dump station nearby. We were visiting relatives in this area, so really only need a safe place to park the rig. This worked out fine."
