    Umpqua's Last Resort & Oregon Mountain Guides

    An adventure and accommodation for everyone!

    General: Located just across the street from the North Umpqua River, there is a mix of:•

    * petite RV sites (RVs up to 20’ with FHU 20-30 amp- 3)

    * deluxe RV sites (RVs up to 29’ with FHU 30-50 amp- 5)

    * Super RV sites (RVs up to 60’ with FHU 50 amp- 7)

    * glamping tents (7)

    * cabins with heat and A/C(4)

    * a cottage

    * a tiny home

    * camper

    * retro bunkhouse

    * retro RV

    Site Quality: We were in a deluxe RV site that had a level gravel camper pad, electric hookup, fire ring, and picnic table. Unlike most RV parks, there was a decent amount of foliage between most sites to provide a measure of privacy.

    Bath/Shower House: Two toilets, two sinks, and two showers. Clean but limited privacy for the toilets with just a curtain. Bench and hooks are outside of showers with no other separation so there is a lack of privacy there as well (did not use the shower so I cannot comment on how well it worked, although they looked nice).

    Activities/Amenities:

    * Guided and Self-guided hiking tours

    * Guided and self-guided mountain bike tours

    * a full-day waterfall tour ($75 pp, with 24-hour advance notice)

    * whitewater rafting tours

    * Stream and river fishing holes

    * Fly fishing and hunting

    * Kayak rentals on Toketee Lake (We had hoped to do this, but the weather had other plans)

    * Wi-Fi is available for $2.99 per 24-hour period per device but it was flaky at best

    * There is a store with ice, firewood, food, beer, and wine, apparel, propane, diesel, and gasoline, rafts, and sleds.

    We arrived later than planned (just before dark) and it was cold and rainy the next day so we were not able to take advantage of the many nearby recreation activities but the staff recommended a nearby waterfall hike that we could do in inclement weather. We would definitely consider returning during better weather.

    Odell Lake

    Beautiful and windy

    We booked site 30, which is up a hill away from the water with a few other sites (27, 28, 29). The site was rated for 32 feet and we were able to comfortably fit our 31 foot trailer and long bed truck. We did have to pull in way too close to the fire pit to make this work but there is a burn ban so we would not have been using it anyway. It would have been nice to know that we were up a hill since we have a toddler, but it wasn’t a huge deal.

    The trailer took up the vast majority of the level space available at the site, but otherwise it would be a nice space for a tent and chairs around the fire.

    Be aware that the wind picks up around noon and goes super strong until after you go to bed. It’s great for not getting any mosquito bites but it is not a mild breeze!

    The lodge staff weren’t overly helpful but not hostile either. I’m sure they are understaffed and annoyed by tourists just like everyone else. They had live music Saturday night and we would have loved to go if our little one wasn’t asleep.

    The area has so many hikes and bike trails so close by that you could spend weeks there and not get bored.

    Diamond Lake

    Year round Camping in style

    If I had to choose my favorite time of year to camp at Diamond Lake I guess it would have to be Winter.

    For many years my family rented a cabin a year in advance and we stayed there from December 23- January 2 with a very large group of our friends.

    It was totally luxurious!

    You can also rent a hotel room there.

    Going down the inner tube slide was a blast, also hanging out in the lodge getting warmed by the fire.

    They also have a huge market on site - almost like a mini Department store. You can buy warm clothing and other supplies there.

    Fishing is kind of a big deal at Diamond also- which we did as a family.

    I remember riding a snow mobile to this Pizza Chalet and getting hot pizza in the middle of nowhere!!

    Such a cool place. Definitely going there this winter to play in the snow ❄️ ⛄️

    I better reserve now !!!!

    Thielson Forest Camp

    Not bad

    Correct coordinates: 43.2558019, -122.1650183

    Small forest camp right off the hwy, next to a creek and is shaded. There are at least 4 campsites, each with a fire pit/ stove, picnic table and room for a small RV (less than 25 ft). There is wifi, and a toilet near the entrance. No trash services. Pack it out.

    Paulina Lake Lodge Cabins

    Amazing food, nice cabins, good views and location

    Old school resort on the shores of beautiful Paulina Lake. Wonderful, small log cabin lodge with amazing food. Other log cabins to rent ranging from three people to large families with fire places, a couple right on the water.

    Cabins have running water, bathrooms, cozy fireplaces, comfy couches. Resort has a boat launch and small general store for supplies, food, and bait.

    The Lake itself is beautiful and the location puts you right next to all of the fun hikes, biking, trails and activities all around Paulina Lake area. Possibly also some spots for RVs.

    Try the Apple Crumble and the“Knife Burger” (huge burger with steak knife stuck in it). You will not be disappointed.

    LaPine State Park Campground

    Quiet, Beautiful and away from it all!

    This was our first time to La Pine County Park.  Unfortunately it was during the horrible fires of the west coast and Oregon was not spared.  The smoke was thick although not as bad as previous camping locations the day before.  The campground is laid out in a very nice way.  The spaces are not close together and from behind most of them are trails into the woods or down to the Deschutes River.  We had full hookups and stayed for two nights.  There is a dog area about an acre in sized that is fenced in for the dogs to enjoy getting exercise.

    Thousand Trails Bend-Sunriver

    This campground is fantastic - but no sewer

    The only reason I did not give this park 5 stars is the lack of sewer. But everything else in the property was top notch. The sites are very large, the power is good, albeit slightly low voltage (117v). Water quality and pressure is good and we had 30m dl speeds on both att and Verizon.

    The sites are heavily treed (pines) with exceptional spacing between. The had a tree service on site taking out the dead trees and obtrusive branches while we were there. Very well kept.

    The bath houses are all clean, and at least one we surveyed appears to be freshly updated. There is a large hall, a well stocked store with beer and firewood and all the necessities .

    They have 6 brand new pickleball courts as well as all the other normal amenities. The pools (2) we not open when we arrived but look to be at least adequate.

    We stayed here in a motorhome and found it to be scenic, close to many attractions and shopping, and as very pleasant stay. We would absolutely come here again.

    Summit Lake Campground

    Heaven on earth - could do without the mosquitos

    My husband, daughter, and I camped at Summit Lake over the weekend 7/1/2023 - 7/2/2023.  This is one of my all time favorite locations. We drove in from I-5 through Oakridge Highway 58 to FS Road 21 to FS Road 2154 to FS Road 398.  Total distance once you get off Highway 58 and onto FS Road 21 is approximately 40 miles.  If you are here during the week, it is highly likely to have the entire lake to yourself.  We don't usually camp in the campground, rather, we camp in one of the primitive sites along the west shore of the lake.  Our site was right on the lake, had a nice rock fire pit, and offered breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding buttes.  The only complaint we had was the mosquitos.  We used an entire bottle of bug spray and I still walked away with dozens of welts.  We built a fire that seemed to push the mosquitos out but drew in the noseeums.  Very peaceful location, breathtaking views, and great kayaking and SUP.

Guide to Chemult

Glamping options close to Chemult, Oregon offer visitors comfortable camping experiences at elevations between 4,000-4,800 feet in the Deschutes National Forest. The region experiences significant temperature swings between day and night, with summer days reaching the 80s but dropping to 40°F after sunset. Most upscale camping facilities operate seasonally from late May through September due to heavy winter snowfall.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Campers at LaPine State Park Campground enjoy easy trail access directly from campgrounds. "Great flat trails for beginner mountain biking. Geocaches, showers, but they turned off the water mid October to mid April," notes a visitor who appreciates the recreational options.

Winter activities: The area transforms during colder months with opportunities for snow sports. "We stayed here in the winter in our camper van and enjoyed the electrical hook up for hearing and cooking inside our van. Only one loop of the campground is open in the winter and water is turned off at the sites except for one central location," reports a winter visitor to LaPine State Park.

Evening stargazing: Dark skies at Summit Lake Campground provide exceptional nighttime viewing. A camper shares, "Very peaceful location, breathtaking views, and great kayaking and SUP." The remote location limits light pollution, making it ideal for astronomy enthusiasts.

What campers like

Private beach areas: Lakeside sites at Sunset Cove Campground offer direct water access. "We were directly on the water which was amazing!! Our site was ok, they had recently cut down a large shrub? There was a lot of debris, sticks, and stumps that you had to walk through in order to get to our fire pit and picnic table," one visitor noted about their waterfront experience.

Clean facilities: Visitors consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms at Crescent Lake Campground. "Camp host is awesome (Summer of 2020) and bathrooms (outhouses) are cleaned every morning. Potable water available all over the campground," shares a camper who appreciated the maintenance standards.

Last-minute availability: Several campgrounds offer non-reservation sites for spontaneous trips. "We came on Sunday with no reservations and found a spot. Only $16 per night! Cell service is decent with around 10-16 Mbps. I have Verizon and Att," reports a Diamond Lake visitor who secured a spot without planning ahead.

What you should know

High elevation effects: The region's higher altitude means significant temperature drops after sunset, even in summer. "It gets cold here at night even in the summer. Waking up by the lake is magical. It was foggy last time we were there and all you could see was one sail boat silhouetted on the lake," shares a visitor to Crescent Lake.

Insect preparation: Bug activity peaks in early summer near water sources. "The only complaint we had was the mosquitos. We used an entire bottle of bug spray and I still walked away with dozens of welts. We built a fire that seemed to push the mosquitos out but drew in the noseeums," warns a Thielson Forest Camp visitor.

Road conditions: Some of the more remote glamping options near Chemult require careful driving. A Summit Lake visitor advises, "We drove in from I-5 through Oakridge Highway 58 to FS Road 21 to FS Road 2154 to FS Road 398. Total distance once you get off Highway 58 and onto FS Road 21 is approximately 40 miles."

Tips for camping with families

Multiple recreation options: Families appreciate areas with diverse activities. "Hiking. Fishing. Exploring. There's a few cool attractions we didn't know about. HUGE tree! Campsites are spread out. Pet friendly," reports a LaPine State Park visitor describing family-friendly features.

Lake swimming access: Look for sites with gradual water entry for safer swimming with children. "This campground has beautiful lake views, access to bathrooms and showers, and ice cream and firewood just a walk or bike ride away! The only complaint I have is there's a lot of mosquitoes," notes a Diamond Lake camper.

Site selection for privacy: Families often prefer more secluded spots. "The sites by the lake appeared to be much larger than the ones further up the hill. Thankfully we had two sites because on the map, it looked like both sites had a pull through area for cars, but the first one had 'parking' which was just an enlarged shoulder," advises a visitor about site selection at Diamond Lake.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookup information: Most luxury glamping sites near Chemult offer partial hookups only. "We stayed in one of the cabins, it was clean and made a nice getaway for a couple days. Bathrooms are a long walk in the middle of the night so I should have chosen a cabin with bathroom," advises a visitor to Millsite Forest Dispersed Camping.

Clearance considerations: RV travelers should note road conditions to more remote glamping locations. "Lost creek campground is a really great campground. It's a little bit out of the way and the road leading up to it is a small gravel road that has some serious potholes, but we had no trouble getting there in our car," shares a visitor describing access challenges.

Seasonal limitations: Winter access is restricted at most glamping sites. "Cozy place great for large groups. Has every thing a campground needs," notes a visitor to Christmas Valley Base Camp, one of the few facilities offering year-round access with heated accommodations.
