Winter temperatures typically range from 20-35°F, while summer months average 70-85°F with moderate rainfall making trail conditions variable throughout seasons.
What to do
Trail riding adventures: At Mohican Wilderness, riders can access numerous trails along the river. "This is a family friendly campground with lots to do. They offer on river and off river sites... They also have little shops that allows visitors to watch loom and black smith demonstrations," explains Shannon P.
Fishing opportunities: Many equestrian campgrounds offer fishing access as part of their amenities. "Listening to the river is what makes this place peaceful. The Hemlock Gorge trail is accessible from the end of the campground. People bring rafts and tubes and float down the river to the main campground at the end of the gorge. There are also good fishing," notes Marci P. about primitive camping options.
Outdoor activities: When not riding, campers can enjoy multiple recreation options. At Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground, "There is fishing, tubing, jet skis and kayaking. The marina has boat rentals available. And since it is in the Mohican area, there is more hiking and activities in the state forest," shares Michelle H.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Horse campers particularly value room to spread out. "We have camped here 3 times now and even though it's a large park the sites are huge so you still feel like you can kick back and relax. Quiet neighbors and friendly staff plus everything is mowed and well maintained," says Andrea F. about Mohican Wilderness.
Trail connectivity: The network of riding paths is a major draw. "Lots of hiking trails and waterfalls. Free hike-in camping available here too," Nicole K. mentions about the surrounding areas that connect with bridle trails.
Natural surroundings: The scenery enhances the equestrian camping experience. "The lightning bugs even put on a nightly show," Andrea F. notes about Pleasant Hill Lake Park, highlighting the natural beauty that accompanies horseback camping trips in this region.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: For many equestrian sites, planning ahead is essential. At Malabar Farm State Park Campground, "Primitive camping with a gravel parking pad and water, fire ring, picnic table and hitching post. No reservations, this is a first come campground," explains Shelly S.
Seasonal considerations: Trail and campground conditions vary by season. "We arrived Friday late afternoon and set up in the rain. Didn't see much of the park on Friday, but Saturday we went exploring and saw the marina, beach, horse camp area, and walked some of the bridle trails," recounts Andrea F.
Cell reception: Connectivity can be limited in horse camping areas. "No cell service with Verizon at this park," notes Andrea F., which can affect trail navigation apps and emergency communications while riding.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with activities beyond riding. At Mohican State Park Campground, "The hiking trails are great with a covered bridge, overlook and waterfalls. The sites are nice and large with lots of trees throughout the park. Camp store is nice and well stocked, gem mining and mountain bike trails are located within the campground as well as a pool," says Andrea F.
Educational opportunities: Some equestrian campgrounds offer learning experiences. "Louis Bromfield was a conservationist and among many other things (including winning a Pulitzer) he was in the forefront of organic and self-sustaining gardening. This place is amazing! (and would be an excellent home schoolers camping trip!)," shares Shelly S.
Water activities: After trail riding, families enjoy cooling off. "Big campground. Boat docking is available. I just love love the beach lake. Great entertainment too. New shower houses by the beach. Great staff. Very friendly and helpful," explains Karrie Kat W.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: For RVers with horse trailers, certain sites work better. "Very large park with plenty of room for hikes, bike rides and walks. The sites are spacious and with the option to park your trailer where you want (grass sites)," notes Shannon P.
Hookup availability: Check utilities before booking equestrian sites. At Canton-East Sparta KOA, "Mostly gravel site..heavy construction where patio sites are. They're not open. Very nosy machinery during the day we are here. Stepped up hill gravel sites," warns Rick K., highlighting terrain challenges for large rigs.
Winter accommodations: Some horseback riding campgrounds remain accessible off-season. "Another Thanksgiving spent in our camper and it was so nice and relaxing. There were more campers than a expected this weekend. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hookup sites are turned off," shares Andrea F.
