What to do
Trail riding opportunities: Access multiple designated horse trails with varying difficulty levels at Beaver Creek State Park Campground. The trail network connects directly to the North Country National Scenic Trail, allowing for extended rides. "Direct access to the North Country National Scenic Trail and trails through main park," notes Tracy H.
Fishing excursions: Fish for bass in Beaver Creek, accessible from several points near the campground. "Bass fishing is really fun because we caught a few nice ones!!" shares Mike T. Bring light tackle gear and check fishing regulations before your trip.
Historical exploration: Visit the pioneer village located near the park office for a glimpse into the area's past. "There is a pioneer village near the park office that offers some picnicking areas around it. It also has original buildings from the pioneer days (church, school, etc). Really historical area to check out and hike around," explains Shay D.
What campers like
Privacy and spaciousness: The equestrian campsites at Beaver Creek offer significant space for both riders and horses. "An unbelievably spacious site under towering pine trees. The site sits back off the road and really makes you feel like you have the place to yourself," reports Matt H. about his experience at site 50.
Star visibility: The rural location creates excellent night sky viewing opportunities. At West Branch State Park Campground, located about 45 minutes from Columbiana, "The sky was dark enough to see far more stars than you'd see near any larger towns or cities. To cap it off, we laid in our tent dozing off to the sounds of owls and coyotes!" shares Matt H.
Water activities: Several area campgrounds feature lakes for recreation. "Great site! Shades lots of space semi private area. Right off the water with area to tie boat for easy water access," notes Katelyn P. about West Branch State Park Campground.
What you should know
Facilities limitations: Some equestrian campgrounds have minimal facilities. At Fernwood State Forest, about 35 miles from Columbiana, facilities are basic but functional. "There are pit toilets and a water pump. The ranger comes by everyday to collect registration cards," explains Karen W.
Filling water tanks: Plan your water needs carefully. At Beaver Creek, "They are on a well so there is limited water and they don't allow you to fill up your on-board tank. Make sure you fill up before you go!" advises Bounding Around.
Seasonal considerations: Spring conditions can affect campground accessibility. "Unfortunately our campsite was under water due the extensive rains recently this past spring overall. But the staff at the camp office gave us a list of all of the open sites that we could choose from so that we could still camp," shares Samantha J. about her experience at Mosquito Lake State Park Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds near Columbiana offer play areas for children. "We got a site near the playground, which my 3 year old enjoyed. The campground wasn't busy and we had a lot of privacy," shares Matt H. about Beaver Creek State Park.
Educational opportunities: Consider visiting the Wildlife Center at Beaver Creek during summer weekends. "The best part about the area was the history that surrounds it. There is a pioneer village near the park office that offers some picnicking areas around it," notes Shay D.
Kid-friendly activities: Jefferson Lake State Park, located about 50 miles from Columbiana, offers family-friendly shoreline activities. "Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek. But be sure to pack a picnic and relax and enjoy!" advises Theresa Tittle R.
Tips from RVers
Site selection considerations: When looking for equestrian camping near Columbiana, carefully review site descriptions. At Jefferson Lake State Park, "Some sites are small and very sloped. Others have lots of room to spread out," notes Kellie A.
Access road awareness: Pay attention to access road restrictions. At Beaver Creek State Park, "There is a road in the park (Echo Dell Road) that RV's/Trailers can't go on so make sure you approach this campground from Leslie Road!" advises Bounding Around.
Leveling equipment: Bring adequate leveling blocks for uneven terrain. When staying at West Branch State Park, one camper reported: "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches."
